I'll concede that point, absolutely.  This time is a little different.

On the other hand, OO's overlong outage came at the worst time for me, gaming-wise, as I finally just got a new PC and some older and newer games, and OO search function was a wealth of information on insights into the various games I've been playing.

You think it was bad timing for you?  I had just created about a dozen Monty Python threads--just minutes before Rip's servers came down--and now I'll never know what people thought of them.

I haven't read OO for a few years but I thought that was a pretty damn good call back, smile

Right! This time it's 2008 instead of 2007 and next year it will be 2009! slywink

By the way I'm doing my part to get the PC forum moving.  I'm going to start a Close Combat 5 AAR and I need forum goers to volunteer for the fight.  Need about 60 people and got 20 so far.  Check it out here:

Long story short, we tried to relaunch prior to E3 last year, but there were some real life events that caused us to miss our target.  Those who have seen the redesign work can attest, this isn't a simple re-skin.  There is an incredible amount of work and improvements going into this, so it isn't something we wanted to launch half-ass.  Obviously with E3 just around the corner one could probably begin to speculate...

It isn't a simple re-design, I've also seen it.

I think all of us should see that for a "volunteer" organization, Ron and the GT staff really has taken care of all of us.  The site re-design in the prior year (to me) is akin to Blizzard pulling the plug on a game that shouldn't happen.  It protects all of us.  But yet, when the GT crew here decided to do a forum redesign, they did it.  They went through the process of testing out various forum software.  They tried to break things and learn as they go along.  Compare the forum software here vs. OO (and other places), and there is a huge difference.  When the site re-design happens, it'll happen, and again - only when its ready.  The GT crew here works hard, and Ron especially works hard at making sure this community doesn't go bye bye.  I work for an internet dot com company - so I know how much work it is to keep a commercial site up - and we don't thank all these volunteers (and Ron) enough.

If you are concerned and want to make sure this site stays up, donate through paypal to [email protected] - or use these links to support the site.

GT employs several techniques to keep our downtime at a minimum:

1.) I'm on this site at all times of the day - I usually know about downtime as it happens.  As a Network Engineer, I can fix anything but code issues myself.
2.) I employ a professional server management company to monitor and recover the site in the event that it is needed as well as perform code maintenance (database repairs, etc.) if needed.
3.) My hosting company also provides site management in the unlikely event that #2 doesn't kick in quick enough.
4.) I run routine backups and periodically test them on a remote test bed.  Evidence that it works is just a few days ago - we had a 4 hour rollback and had to fix some accounts, but the restore worked flawlessly.
5.) Server is on a redundant Sonet ring transport fiber from multiple telco's giving us 100mbps dedicated links

And in the immediate future:

June 15th or thereabouts we'll be moving to a FAR larger server with double the ram (at double the speed) and double the cores (at double the speed).

If you guys end up moving in and settling down, I'll make space for ya.

Re: PC games section

I'm in the camp that OO had a better PC Gaming section (OOPCGS), but really, what's holding the GT PC Gaming section (GTPCGS) back since a lot of people who contributed to that thread are starting to build base camp here?

I would think that if GTPCGS started to become more active like the OOPCGS, it would draw the people who only went to OO for the OOPCGS, making the GTPCGS the GTPCGS One Stop Shop For All Your PC Gaming Needs (GTPCGSOSSFAYPCGN), and the OOPCGS, The Once Great OOPCGS But Now As Good As The GTPCGSOOSFAYPCGN (TOGOOPCGSBNAGATGTPCGSOOSFAYPCGN)

See, simple.

Screw you. I need an advil.

Aye caramba!

My comment was meant to be construed as the last time I saw a redesign image it was a long time ago...and therefore I probably have no idea what the site is actually going to look like. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Excuse me, but you are addressing a Gaming Trend Senior Member (thankyouverymuch!), the #3 thread starter of all time, #8 poster of all time, the starter of the #3 most replied to thread of all time and the object of many hetero mancrushes.  I am also El Producto's BFF.

My contributions are legend and the only thing I could do more to ensure GT succeeds is be KD himself.

Now I'm not saying I'm the #2 most important person around here (KD being #1) but, in fact I am.  It was Warning before he resigned as Mod, but now he's in the high 20s at best...AT BEST!  Oh and I also saved KD's ass in 'Nam.

ATB - its not about thread starting or posting...I just wanted to make people aware that they can donate.  The comment was not directed at you - hopefully you see that.  If you took offense and thought that it was directed at you, it was not.

And mine was a sarclassically witty retort.

You silly fellow, I didn't really save KD in 'Nam, it was Panama.  Also, Warning was NEVER the number 2 most important person around here.  It has always been me.

Our relationship will gel over time and we shall wonder how it is there was once this distance between us.
