Count me as a permanent lurking fixture here now too; this OO debacle has left me relatively disillusioned with the team behind OO... Even with multiple offers of help, nothing was acted on and here we still sit offline.

Being in an IT career for this long, I am absolutely astounded at how this was handled.  RIP was pretty pissed off at the beginning for people being on his back; which initially I thought he had a right to be.  Now? Instead of restoring the DB, or further updates; it's a deafening silence..

Anyways I was never integral to say the least from OO; but I just don't see the point even if the database is restored someday.  Now you will never know if OO f'ed my career up as per my poll!

I absolutely agree with you. I remember Rip's comments earlier "It's just a forum, lighten up". That put a bad taste in my mouth. For a lot of us, GG and OO were not 'just a forum'. A lot of us made real, genuine friends on those forums. I made friends there that I now call on the phone, and play multiplayer games with, and share life events with. Some of us go back 6 and 7 years, maybe more.

Fish, you were the one I noticed early on offering to help ... and early on I simply asked that if the priority of restoration was going to be this low (and obviously it has been), that the necessary stuff be turned over to those who were willing to do the work, and take over the hosting. This was ignored, as you mentioned.

That Rip was hosting the site for free is and always will be appreciated, but it ceased to be the point .. I was just concerned that the community would suffer.

Yeah, personally, I've never seen anything like it. It's just kind of sad, and it seems to me, unnecessary. I'm not asking for Rip to be crucified or anything, I just want the software in the hands of someone who has the time to make it a higher priority. Being blunt about it, 2 months is simply a ridiculous amount of time to restore a web forum.

All that said, I have become very fond of GT over these past two months, and the team and the regulars here are great. Another big thanks to Ron & company for taking us in.

I like most everything here but I agree that the PC section is the part of OO I miss most.  If the GT powers that be don't mind forum games, those can be added if there is a desire.  The PC forum could be strong but that just requires us PC gamers to get active and get posting.  It's the old information that is on OO that would be the hardest to replace.

I wonder how many of the OO mods, etc., are looking at this long holiday and are thinking that they don't miss the chores vs. wanting to assume the responsibility again.  I have no doubt that Rip is hard at work, but I don't get the vibe that OO's disappearance is being seen as a calamity anymore.

Ditto what you said Arnir-the PC games forum is what you make it.  Rather than sit here and yearn for the days of old, get into the PC games forum and start up a new thread-that place will be hopping in no time.  Someone needs to do an AAR for us STAT! smile

Living in Lafayette I know a few people who are working with Rip getting t up and running, I will try to squeeze a little info when I meet up with a "lackey" tonight. No promises.

I will return to OO, and I will start posting more, even if it is ignored, to help take up more space and make it look like there is more activity than there really is.

I too miss the PC game section.  I never posted in there too much, but I read almost everything posted there.

I need OO to come back online long enough for me to copy down my Books read in 2007 and 2008. I read them, but damn if I can remember all the titles. I guess that's the value of cross posting to other forums.

That's a great idea!  Maybe Kobra and Hetz could threaten each other over some obscure technical issue related to Fallout 3 or something.

Maybe GT should just create a drama subforum for containment purposes.  We could call it something else and then suck people into it.  The good will come out, and the rest........... deadhorse for eternity.

And before anyone asks, yes, I will decide who are the good people.

He posted out of the blue in the middle of a GTAIV thread on QT3 recently but no one reacted to his appearance and he hasn't posted since.

So with OO being relatively a goner, and previously the GG problems.. I need some assurance that GT won't shit the bed next week and bail out! I demand an independant audit by a non-biased third party (preferably a drunken mexican, or a drunken canadian.. Or a drunken mexican canadian? Back bacon burritos! Hrmm I am on to something here... ah oh, I'm starting to sound like Lord Mortis now, quick somebody slap me!).

Anyhow seriously though, does GT do regular backups? Have they been tested to ensure recovery would work? I'm hesitant to lurk (and be shunned) at yet another forum if there isn't a recovery plan in place.  Please feel free to shun me post answer.

Well, it looks like there was an tech emergency this week and they had it fixed pronto.  It's one of the threads in whatever the forum is called that discusses forum issues.  I don't know the specifics of the backup situation, though.

KD is much too visible and proactive to let anything happen to GT, not to mention his own tech background.  OO's problem is there isn't anyone who takes full responsibility which is why (IMHO) everyone is deferring entirely to Rip and his schedule.

The difference is GT is a gaming website with an active front page, news, reviews and forums.  The only major problem was when it was still Console Gold and LaPorte pulled the plug.  But Gaming Trend is such a better and more descriptive name that it all turned out good.

That's the same with me.  OO was the place to be for mature discussions on all aspects of PC gaming.  The alternatives are all flawed in one way or another - underpopulated, too many d00dz, poor forum software, or that 'other' forum which is full of crazy people who constantly make inside jokes and flamewars I dont understand (OO kept that stuff in the off-topic sections, where it belongs).

I think OO can make a quick recovery (at least for the PC games sections) simply because there are few alternatives.  If not, well hopefully the refugees come here and start making more PC game posts!

I think that for many of us OO PC gamers is the archive of PC material back at OO. If it isn't recovered then I don't think that OO will have the same appeal for the PC forum crowd.  I agree with DireAussie about the very high quality of the PC gaming discussion at OO.  That is what kept me at OO.

I do think that we OO refugees that think about staying here at GT need to think just as much as how we can fit into GT rather than just how we can change GT into the new OO.

I think that for many of us OO PC gamers is the archive of PC material back at OO.
It's not just PC games, either.  There's an active 4 year thread of music purchases/recommendations that is currently unavailable.  There's annual book lists & discussions.  There's many more topics that people care about that are currently lost.

I joined GG/OO because I was a PC Gamer, but the community was enough to keep me posting/reading even when I basically stopped PC gaming for a couple years.  Posts about movies, music, books, TV, news, life, etc. by people who we've grown to know (to some small degree) who overlap in many of your likes/dislikes are what kept me posting all these years.  Frankly, I really miss the "Hey, I found a new band that you HAVE to check out!" posts.  Those were always fun to read, hear and discover even when I didn't wind up getting as interested in the band as the poster did.

On the other hand, OO's overlong outage came at the worst time for me, gaming-wise, as I finally just got a new PC and some older and newer games, and OO search function was a wealth of information on insights into the various games I've been playing.

Tell me about it.  I just got a new PC as well and I'm sure the three cores I'm not using and the 512mb video card are wondering why I needed them when all I'm playing is a five year old railroad game.   disgust

Get World in Conflict, max settings and run the benchmark in game. Should hopefully allay your concerns on whether the purchase was worth it.

The only problem with GT regarding PC Games for me was the number of posters in comparison with OO. I very rarely look back more than a couple of pages and seldom use the search function unless its to find my posts smile

Problem seems easily solved now a number of OO regulars are over here

Re: PC games section

I'm in the camp that OO had a better PC Gaming section (OOPCGS), but really, what's holding the GT PC Gaming section (GTPCGS) back since a lot of people who contributed to that thread are starting to build base camp here?

I would think that if GTPCGS started to become more active like the OOPCGS, it would draw the people who only went to OO for the OOPCGS, making the GTPCGS the GTPCGS One Stop Shop For All Your PC Gaming Needs (GTPCGSOSSFAYPCGN), and the OOPCGS, The Once Great OOPCGS But Now As Good As The GTPCGSOOSFAYPCGN (TOGOOPCGSBNAGATGTPCGSOOSFAYPCGN)

See, simple.

GT employs several techniques to keep our downtime at a minimum:

1.) I'm on this site at all times of the day - I usually know about downtime as it happens.  As a Network Engineer, I can fix anything but code issues myself.
2.) I employ a professional server management company to monitor and recover the site in the event that it is needed as well as perform code maintenance (database repairs, etc.) if needed.
3.) My hosting company also provides site management in the unlikely event that #2 doesn't kick in quick enough.
4.) I run routine backups and periodically test them on a remote test bed.  Evidence that it works is just a few days ago - we had a 4 hour rollback and had to fix some accounts, but the restore worked flawlessly.
5.) Server is on a redundant Sonet ring transport fiber from multiple telco's giving us 100mbps dedicated links

And in the immediate future:

June 15th or thereabouts we'll be moving to a FAR larger server with double the ram (at double the speed) and double the cores (at double the speed).

If you guys end up moving in and settling down, I'll make space for ya.

Damn I don't want to ask it but I have to slywink So if you had a 4 week downtime, would that be unacceptable to you - you personally rather than the site, I just get the feeling that OO really isn't that important to those who can do anything about it.

Personally I was always more GT with the problem that OO had more people in the PC area.

I'm not going to confirm or deny that June 15th could be an important date.   stirthepot

I'll concede that point, absolutely.  This time is a little different.
