I have to go back: my research on the OO forum members was reaching a crucial stage. I'd just gotten the "alpha males" of the forum to tolerate my presence. I'd manage to tag some of the subjects and was observing their movements via satellite telemetry. However, that's still no substitute for old-fashioned field work. I was just beginning to understand their geek hierarchy when events spun out of control and I fled here.
That's what this new tatoo is? You sneaky bastard. DUDE! What's mine say? poor impulse control..... Not the notes in my chart, the Tattoo ya bastard Am I the only person who bought "Dude, where's my Car?" *cricket* Crap. BOUGHT?! Very likely. Seen, no, but I got back to late to answer "Sweet" since CeeKay had beat me to the punch. Now stop pouting ya sissy little girl.

And then
And then
And then
Anybody else have the urge to go to the post office and buy a shit ton of one cent stamps so you can put fortytwo of them on your envelops so you can send post?
Why don't cats become cat nip addicts? For that matter why do they only go after cat nip and get stoned on it until it's gone when said nip is presented to them? You'd think they would form cat cartells to find and protect those precious plants. What makes cats so much less sphexish when it comes to getting high than what seems like just about every other mammal out there?
Why don't we sell saltines precrushed? Why should I have to break them up before putting them in my soup? Yet my damned cereal always seems to be crushed. And speaking of, on the box of my Cinnamon Toast Crunch it says prominently and proudly "real sugar in every bite." Rly? Who exactly doesn't know this? Who exactly are they trying to sell the whole sugar angle to?
Why does the prefix of Uni- mean both exactly one damned thing and every damned thing you can think of thrown together? Shouldn't a unicycle have the whole set of tires?
Why do people say ATM Machine? Why don't they say things like the UN Nations or SCUBA apparatus or MASH Hospital or GT Trend? I had a friend who used to repeat the last word or phrase of every thing he said. That took a lot of getting used to. I never had the gumption to ask him what the hell was up with that. And not knowing will probably bother me for the rest of my life. Gumption sounds like word that should measure your dorkiness. Having a lot of gumption should mean that you excel at math but suck at picking up women or something. Someone really dropped the ball on that word. Who do you have to write to get that shit changed? I'm on my way out. I should drop them a post.

I have to admit, I get rather worryingly angry when people say "PIN number."

Why do people say ATM Machine?
The egg's on your face, buddy! In select cities across the country they now have machines that dispense ATMs. Very handy. I have to admit, I get rather worryingly angry when people say "PIN number."
And likewise, banks started getting so many duplicate PINs that they had to start numbering them. So while you used to enter your PIN to get cash, now you simply enter your PIN number and the machine calls up your PIN automatically.

Why do people say ATM Machine? The ones in my neighborhood growing up were all called "MAC Machines," for Money Access Center. That makes more sense. I am going to a central location to access my money via a machine. An automatic teller machine is neither automatic nor tells. Discuss.

This was the only announcement I saw. The SMF forum software doesn't handle 10 page banning dramas as well as phpBB2 so the GT staff often has to do stealthy moderation.

Long story short, we didn't want to make a big deal about it. He decided that he was done with the site as he felt we were 'treating him like a second class citizen' by not allowing him to frequent the R&P forum anymore. We have rules, he broke them. He left. End of story.

I guess P&RN is to long of an acronym though.
But if P&RN were to long, what acronym would it long for? Just a "P," perhaps? Sorry. Long day. Political Or Religious Nonsense makes for a much better, yet disappointing acronym.

I understand that there were issues, but at some point there is going to be a final death knell due to atrophy. I love GT, but OO had some good posters that for some reason don't want to transition over.

Somebody should start planning the "Two months since OO died" party on this board. I'm pretty sure we won't be celebrating it on OO.
Also, why does the temp page refer to "OO Forum Staff" when no one but Rip seems to want to take any ownership of what's going on?

At this point I don't even remember (If I did ever know) who the powers that be behind OO are/were. I know Rip was technical, but beyond that, I was never certain.

Well, some of Rip's posts seem to refer to other people having to make decisions. For example, he's hinted that OO could go up "as it was" but that they might upgrade the software, etc., now since they were going to in the near-term anyway. He's suggested that isn't his decision to make. So who's is it? Edit: For example, in this thread on April 29th Rip said "It is however possible that OO could be up and running where it left off by morning. That is/was/will be a staff decision." He said that in reference to whether they would just put OO back up or would do some previously planned work to improve/upgrade the site. I'm just wondering who the "staff" he's referring to are.

That statement [that it could be up running where it left off by morning] was inaccurate. AFAIK, we're still waiting on the DB from Rip.

I am sure it will come back eventually, and I will go back. But I would bet OO is pretty much dead at this point. Some people won't return having already moved on and with no way of gaining new users, I don't think OO will ever be as lively as it once was. Kind of makes me sad because even though I probably can't call most of them friends, I will miss keeping up with what they were doing.

I don't understand why the Old Ones have abandoned us. We kept all their commandments, even the ones that contradicted each other. We sent the usual sacrifices - many had the honor of becoming The Drown - and our army of undead thralls was growing. True the number of our lurkers far outweighed the number of active disciples but it had ever been so: the thousand different voices of the disciples expressed the chaos of our ancient leaders and surely lurkers would have found some madness that appealed to them.
Now the Tower of Complacency is empty save for the occasional wanderer; and few are the messages from the dataverse. And we're stuck with all those "Octopus Overlords Lives" t-shirts.

Hmm, time to chime in here...
I dont really miss it that much I must agree - although I had around 3000 posts there, I wasnt really a part of it, or the inner circle as its known amongst us on the fringe worlds ;-)
I like it here, and as others have said, I'll probably go back there once in a while if it resurfaces, but...I fear it will never recover and will become something of a mausoleum, a place to go wander aimlessly once in a while to reminisence...
oh, and I kinda like GT...

Also, why does the temp page refer to "OO Forum Staff" when no one but Rip seems to want to take any ownership of what's going on?
I say "OO Forum Staff" on the update page partly because I ran the first official statement (and possibly second) with the staff. It sounds more official-like too.
The staff includes the technical admins, forum admins, and the moderators. It's probably been mentioned elsewhere, but prior to the downtime we were discussing (and actually pretty much on the cusp of) doing a forum software upgrade/conversion, in addition to moving the site to different hardware within Rip's domain. With the downtime, we talked about what to do with bringing the site up, whether to do the software upgrade immediately (after all, what's one more day of downtime?) or put things up knowing we'd be bringing it down in the near future again for the upgrade. That's the decision Rip is referring to. At this point, we're still waiting for the database to be brought back online, which echoes the temp page, and is why there has been no further update.

As someone who washed ashore here after the GG debacle, I've always appreciated the forum and it inhabitants for their hospitality and shared heritage with GG. At the time this place was much more console focused. Being a PC gamer, when OO was born I made that my home. I only checked in here occasionally after that.
Fast forward to today and some comments about GT through the eyes of a PC gamer. The off-topic forum is almost as good as OO so I don't miss much there, but the PC Gaming forum just lacks that something special that OO had. It is somewhat to do with the quantity of threads (pretty much every big title had a thread on OO) but I think it is more the focus on indie games and the fact that you knew that everything that was worthwhile was going to get covered. I have this weird feeling here at GT that I miss out on some cool gems because they aren't getting posted about.
Having said all that, the PC Games forum has gathered momentum in the last six weeks but it still has a way to go before it will completely replace the OO PC Games By Title forum. Given some time and the influx of some OO posters GT could completely supplant OO. It will be interesting to see what happens if/when OO is resurrected.

I found this place a nice balance of console-pc gamers. True, right after GG went bust this site was very heavily slanted toward consoles. But I've found the knowledge and expertise of the regulars here very high.
I do like OO as well though. I just thought having both was a win win situation. And I found it great that a ton of people on both the GT and OO forums are old Gone-Golders...
Great bunch. Very happy I have this place to call "home".
