While I am also a little tired of the "found footage" craze, I just watched a trailer for Chronicle, and while at first I thought I had an idea as to what it was about, it wasn't until the final rewind that got me pretty intrigued.

I felt that way when Moliere posted it, too.

So it's kinda like a co-op inFamous or Prototype meets high school drama then?

Chaz and I agree then. biggrin

I was thinking about all the mediocre films in this genre that I've seen over the years and I think without fail that every one of them could have been condensed into half hour to hour long offerings and they wouldn't have suffered.  The bad ones couldn't be saved at all (Yellowbrickroad, for example) no matter what you did to them.

The best offerings still could have benefited from shorter run times as the padding these films get is often times a bit ridiculous (hey, let's film the cat playing with a ball of yarn for 12 minutes...THEN we'll hit 'em with a chair moving in the background!).

So what is the alternative - unfound footage horror films? Seems to be missing something, methinks.

In some cases, NOT finding the footage would be a blessing...

He's listed in the credits like, 30 times. All in grip roles.

The more I see of Chronicle, the more I look forward to it.  It's rapidly becoming my most anticipated film of the first half of 2012.

There's one good 'found footage' horror film coming our way. It just debuted at Sundance and its called 'V/H/S'. It was produced by the man who runs BloodyDisgusting.com and it's an anthology film with a lot of talented horror directors directing segments. It got great reviews on its debut at Sundance and has been picked up for distribution by Magnolia Pictures. To be released later this year.

Saw Chronicle last night at an AICN screening here in Austin. The director was in attendance (and Robert Rodriguez was sitting two seats down from me but that was irrelevant slywink).

I was BLOWN AWAY. Go see this movie as soon as you can, it is extremely badass.

Want to see! Want to see! Want to see!
Quote
But, it hardly matters. What keeps "Chronicle" compelling is not the quickly wearing novelty of verité style narrative, but a story in which the stakes aren't on some far fetched villain who has a plan to destroy the world, but are based on character driven issues. It's not about a hero who is running out of time to save humanity, but a human who is running out of options. And while we're making it sound deeper than it is (and the movie cheekily tosses around some philosophical mumbo jumbo), it's just the right amount detail to make these characters worth caring about, and their adventure meaningfully engaging.

Rounded off by a dazzling and pretty uncomprising finale, and helmed with some real verve and energy by Trank, "Chronicle" posits that with great power comes great responsibility. And if your a teenager, that message is doubly true.

I'm hearing this one described in the 'horror' genre, which quite frankly I'm not interested in at all, but everything on Rotten Tomatoes makes it sound more like a super-hero movie, with one of the friends going bad.  What makes it horror?  Is this horror as in scary, or gorefest, or what?

Ignore the subject title of this thread.  Chronicle is a sci fi film from what I've read/heard.  I can't speak for the amount of gore, but I would imagine violence is involved in the story.  Violence isn't the sole domain of horror films, though.

Or...you know...someone could create a thread devoted to the current topic outside a thread that started as a broader discussion of the genre.

Yup, when I was at a Mission 4 showing yesterday, the pre-trailers video stuff included a loooooooooong preview of The River. We thought it was a movie at first. Made me think of this thread. I'm not sure what value "from the director of Paranormal Activity" means to people. Do most people know who Oren Peli is, or even care?

Next step could be a TV network where ALL the shows are "found footage" shows! And Netflix will have a streaming channel only showing "Found footage" horror films! Oh boy!  icon_razz

Hollywood's not known for originality. If anything shows a glimmer of success in TV or movies (reality shows, Survivor type shows, American Idol-type shows, one-camera "The Office" type shows, "found footage" horror), you can bet it will be pile-driven into your face over and over and over and over and over and over and over, probably for years and years. And it won't stop until the ratings are completely dead, the box office is completely kaput, or other successful gimmicks take their place.
