While I don't think family should have to suffer through having their childeren die before them, I don't really feel sorry for ODB. He was a druggy and a criminal. He may have had some talent according to some, but he reaped what he sowed for sure.

That could be said about a lot of famous actors that die. One of those die and everyone gets all upset. A rapper dies and everyone says "Ha! He deserved that!"

Rest in Peace, ODB. I was a big fan of the Wu after their first and second albums. It's a shame that he died at such an early age.

I have no idea who this guy (guy right?) is. Does that mean I'm just too old, too white or too old and white?

True, but "gangsta" rappers not only live that lifestyle, their entire career is based on glamorizing it... that's probably where most of the animosity comes from.

Laner beat me to it. The animosity towards rap is because of the glamorizing of 'street cred', and 90% of 'popular' rap acts are unbelieveably stupid derivative rehashing of the whole gansta rap mantra.

True, but "gangsta" rappers not only live that lifestyle, their entire career is based on glamorizing it... that's probably where most of the animosity comes from. That's an ignorant statement and very broad generalization. Not everything considered 'gangsta rap' is glamorizing the lifestyle. Certainly, in today's sorry state of hiphop, a lot of it is but the real talented gangsta rappers do not glamorize it. Rather, they describe reality. Maybe not *your* reality but reality that exists none the less. Gangsta rap is a protest music against the system and its injustices. Furthermore, Ol' Dirty Bastard was hardly a gangsta rapper. He made party hits and his songs were generally considered crazy - in a good way. I don't recall one song about violence or gangsterism (granted, there might be one or two). Next time, try to refrain from making such statements trying to justify your dislike for the music. Especially in a thread such as this. Thanks!

Excuse me, but at what point did I say anything about my like or dislike of rap or Mr. Bastard?
I know good and well that not all rap that falls under the "gangsta" label necessarily glamorizes it, but you know as well as I do that most of it *does*, and more importantly, that is the public perception of it. Which would explain the supposed double standard that Valael questioned.
Next time, try not to put words in my mouth, thank you.

Now they'll have to change his name to Ol' Dead Bastard - don't even have to change the initials
