Brilliant. Just brilliant. May now be in my top 10. Have to see if it holds up on repeated viewings.

If you have not seen this, run, do not run, to rent it.  Fun. Hilarious. Genius.

Only 2 dislikes:

Spoiler for Hiden:
1. How the hero is revealed to be the hero.  Was hoping for a training montage of some sort.  As it was explained seem kinda like they were running out of budget so they had to do it in dialogue

2. The final fight. It was good but not great...and it was over too soon.

Otherwise: 4 stars across the board. FANTASTIC.

I watched this with the lowest of expectations and I was blown away.  It managed to be hilarious and to top the movies it was mocking.  The movie just kept surpassing itself with every twist.  No fan of kung-fu movies should pass this one by.

Great film with cool action and some laugh out loud scenes.

Just to note the recently released "Axe-Kickin'" edition of KFH is the uncut HK version of the film.

I've been hoping they would get Chow to do a live-action Dragonball Z.

Maybe after he's done with Kung Fu Hustle 2.

I called this movie "pure movie joy" when I went to see it in the theatre.  I stand by that statement.  I couldn't wipe the smile off my face throughout the whole thing.

Not too much was cut.  It's mainly bits of blood reinstated, and two small scenes put back in:

From dvdbeaver.com:

Quote
After the scene where the landlady knocks the landlord out the window onto the ground, the original Hong Kong version shows a bit of blood flowing out from under the landlord's face after the plant smashes his head. The American version removes the blood.
Sing's failed attempt in intimidating a Pig Sty village farmer, who punches him square in the stomach. The Hong Kong version shows Sing spitting out blood, which ends up appearing on the farmer's face after Sing asks her what she does. The American version digitally removes both the blood being spit out (but blood is still seen around his mouth implying it was "coming up") as well as the blood splats on the farmer's face.
During the night scene right before the attack from the musicians there is a long take showing what most of the residents of Pig Sty are doing, including someone crouching on the ground having a "bowel movement". The Hong Kong version shows a piece of paper with excrement on it implying what he was doing, while the American version removes the paper and its "contents", leaving the viewer confused as to why he's simply crouching down with his pants partially down.

While these scenes were censored, two were completely cut:

When "The Beast" punches Sing in the chest in the casino, two extra shots appear in the Hong Kong cut, with the first being a slow motion shot of blood spraying upward The Beast's face, and the second being another slow motion shot, this time of Sing's head flying back with blood spraying from his mouth.
Soon after this, Sing's face is punched into the ground by The Beast, and a several second slow motion shot of The Beast's bloody hand being raised from the ground is shown in the Hong Kong cut. The American cut simply jumps from the shot of Sing's head being punched through the ground to the low angle shot of The Beast pulling his fist up.

Rented this again and watched it for the first time since starting this thread.

I liked it even more this second time.

Now to deal with my two previous dislikes:

I still agree with this, but it didn't irk me as much this time and I'm fine with it.

I don't agree with this one anymore and I think the final fight is just about right.

Still 4 stars!  icon_smile

God this movie rules.

"What are... you... prepared... to do?"

"We don't understand you."

Probably got the biggest laugh from that but I'm rolling here.

I cannot place that scene. Are you watching in the cantonese with english subs? If not, start over.

Yeah, I'm watching in Cantonese with the English subs. It's what one master says to another. The joke being the master quotes "The Untouchables" in English while the other master replies in Cantonese. The Beast = ROFLMAO. This film has everything. thumbsup thumbsup About half an hour or so left.

I am sorry to break up this love fest....but I thought the movie was horrible, absolute dreck!!!! I just dont care for the genre and thought it poked cliche, tired, lock of fun in a craptacular style.

I believe I posted about this movie a couple years back on OO on my hatred for this piece of s*(t

I've thought about it a little more and now I'm going to have to get into spoiler territory.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The reveal of The One and subsequent spoof of pretty much every fight in the Matrix series, wasn't as funny as what came before. When Sing is a massive screw-up the film is hilarious. The second his chi clears, the humor falls through the floor. I laughed my head off when he got his ass kicked on the train by the guy in glass, for example. But the final fight left me somewhat indifferent. Also, I both like and dislike that they weren't more explicit on whether he was actually their son. It would make sense in context of everything, and maybe they'll address it in the sequel scheduled for 2010, but I would have liked something more definitive.

Oh, and I loved the fight with the musicians. The way that whole thing was done was beautifully elegant.
