Ugh.

Quote
Nick has just finished his first comic book character role. He took his professional name that is his name now from a comic book - and... well there's never really been a doubt that Cage was geek through and through... but today... the geek jumped the track and flew into the heavens of geek cool. You see, Nicholas Cage just had a boy today - and he named the kid...
KAL-EL COPPOLA CAGE!!!

Give yourself that name if you want to, but not your kid.

Add to this "Apple," "Rumer," and any one of 100 stupid names that celebrities dub their children. Maybe if someone puts enough chlorine in the Hollywood water it will sterilize all the stupid people. slywink

The phenomenon isn't just in Hollywood...there are a lot of average people giving their kids names they will hate their parents for as they get older.

I agree with RobbieD.  At least that kid will lead a priveledged life.  Imagine going through public school with a name like that.  Not that I don't see a lot of weird names.  It's insanity out there.  I don't have as many of the old "traditional" names in my classes these days...

I have students named Prince, Heaven, Damien (Who the fuck names their kid after the anti-christ in Omen!?), Princess, Gueber (pronounced Goober), and Dong.  Don't parents remember what it was like for kids to be picked on?

I mean, for Pete's sake, Gueber!?  Dong!?

Imagine being best friends with Dong.  Imagine walking down the street with him, seeing something interesting and saying "hey look at that, Dong!".

What's worse than being named Dong is having a classmate named Gueber. Talk about adding insult to injury. Now all you need is a Ding, a Hung and a Long, all seated in the same row. That would male roll call a special time of the day.

True story time:

Back in third grade, I was one of two people with similar names.  In our case, our names began Richard H....

So the teacher, older woman, says at the beginning of of the year "I see we are going to have confusion because of your names.  How about if I just call one of you Dick?"

We both yelled out "NO!" at the same time. The other kids laughed and the teacher just looked a bit puzzled.  Then she said "You don't mind if I get your names confused once in a while?".  We both said we didn't care, and so ended the possibility of being called Dick for the rest of the year.  Yeah even in the 3rd grade we were that horrified at the idea.  It was so traumatic, it is one of the most vivid memories of my childhood.

I call a lot of my students by their last names.  All my friends call me by my last name and it never hurt me.  So there!

My parents named me an indonesian name that means champion, even to this day people keep making fun of my name. Now I don't hate my parents for giving me the name, but sometime I wish that I have a common name or a name that has no meaning.

I have a name that was tease-worthy (Misty), but I have come to love it.

On the otherhand, I had two college students that I taught and I realized that I never had name problems compared to them.

Richard Wackett and Sean Cumm - yes in the same class.

At my high school we had a "Michael Hunt".  He went by Mike.  It wasn't until I was a junior and I met him that I realized that his name being called on the loudspeaker wasn't a joke that someone was pulling on the front office.

A) it's "Dweezil" (apparently his guitar wants to kill your mama)... and

B) There's his seldom heard-of little sister Diva Muffin Zappa - http://imdb.com/name/nm0953259/

My granddad went by "Dick"; and he wasn't even named Richard (Robert Franklin, rather).  I've never speculated as to why...

Yeah, she likes to pretend I'm Batman.  She's even going to be Wonder Woman for Halloween.

To seque even further, I enjoyed meeting "Peter of the North" when I played Baldur's Gate...

And damn it all on spelling Dweezil wrong.  I blame Daehawk for misspelling it in the first place!

Finally, glad somebody pointed out Wonder Woman.  I thought that avatar was Batman with a tremendous headache, like lasers shooting in or out of his ear.  Makes more sense now.
