Games started in North America -  Let's keep the talk going.

Fortunately there are no Flames fans in here or I'd give them crap for last night... icon_wink

Forgot to add: Wonder if Marty's new mask (not sure I like it) will help him get past the 1st round!!

New season baby!

Well, it wouldn't be a new hockey season thread without the customary posting that "This is our year!" by me, then leaving the thread until something good actually happens... which is never!

So...

                Go Flyers!

This thread is going to be a thorn in my side for quite some time.

Oh well.  I still support my team no matter what.  Go Josh Bailey!

Yup...that was quite a solid trouncing, but the Flames deserved it for adding Bertuzzi to their mix. icon_twisted I guess the Canucks 6-1 preseason record might have meant something afterall. I really liked the 1st star performance of Burrows in that game. Burrows, Kesler and Raymond are more important to the Canucks this year than I think most people recognize. If those 3 can manage to click, if Demitra and Bernier live up to expectations and if the coaching staff can convince the Sedins to backcheck; Canucks will be one helluva powerhouse this year.

Wings opener... disappointing.  At least Holmstrom came out to play!  Hossa had *one* shot?  Nice work, wunderkind.

Go Bruins!

Our defense may suck, but at least we can score on mediocre goalies.

GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!

Man what a good start.  Power Play actually CONTROLLED the puck and...GASP......the Sharks actually put someone in front of the net!!!!  I guess losing to teams who do that year after year in the playoffs finally rubbed off.

GO SHARKS!!!!!!!!!!

Nabby? Come on. These flash-in-the pan goaltenders have come and gone while Marty stays at the top of the league. I've seen them all, Kolzig, Turco, Hasek, Kippy, Belfour, Khabibulin, Vernon, etc. Jim Carey even has a Vezina for Christ's sake.

Now it's Nabby, Luongo and Lundqvist - Please. Come Talk to me in 15 years.  icon_biggrin

Oh, and, sorry Shifty.

It's going to be a tough crawl back to the Playoffs for my tired and battered Penguins without Hossa.  The Power Play needs to step it up, which is tough to do with the missing personnel. Yet, It is hard to not have some high hopes with the core of players on our bench.  Malkin apparently was in some serious pain in the cup games, explaining his smothering by the Wing's defense.  Hopefully he has healed.

It's going to be a long road to the second season.

Go Go Canucks! Glad to see those Calgary goons go down in both games - especially since we clawed our way back to a win on Saturday.

I'm glad to see my post season dispare turn to glee now that it seems we've magically found a scoring touch - at least so far.

Very sad news, evidentally Alexei Cherepanov died after a game.  Here is the press release.

Quote
Prospect Cherepanov Passes Away at 19
Young Russian forward was team's No. 1 pick in 2007
Oct 13, 2008, 3:54 PM EDT

New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather regretfully announced today that forward Alexei Cherepanov passed away during a game in Russia on Monday evening. Cherepanov was 19 years old.

Alexei Cherepanov “We are extremely saddened by the tragic passing of Alexei,” said Sather. “On behalf of the New York Rangers organization, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to his family. Alexei was an intelligent, energetic young man, with tremendous talent and an extremely bright future.”

Cherepanov appeared in 14 games with Avangard Omsk of the Continental Hockey League (KHL) this season, registering seven goals and five assists for 12 points. He ranked second on the team in goals (seven) and fourth in points (12). He also ranked third on the team with a 24.1% shooting percentage.

The 6-1, 187-pounder appeared in 106 career Russian Super League (RSL)/KHL matches with Avangard Omsk, collecting 40 goals and 29 assists for 69 points, along with 61 penalty minutes. Last season, Cherepanov established a career-high in assists (13) while finishing fourth on the club in points (28). In 2006-07, he set the RSL record for most goals by a rookie (18), eclipsing Pavel Bure’s mark (17) set in 1988-89 with the Red Army (CSKA Moscow).

With 29 points in his first season with Omsk, Cherepanov recorded more points than Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin, Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin and Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk each tallied in their first RSL season.

Internationally, Cherepanov represented Team Russia in several elite tournaments. Most recently, he helped lead Russia to a Bronze Medal in the 2008 U-20 World Junior Championships, tallying three goals and three assists for six points and a plus-three rating in six games. In 2007, Cherepanov earned Top Forward honors by the Directorate and was selected to the All-Tournament Team at the 2007 U-20 World Junior Championships, where he led all players in scoring with eight points (five goals and three assists) in six games and helped Team Russia capture a Silver Medal.

The Barnaul, Russia native was originally the Rangers’ first round choice, 17th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

After starting the season 1-2-1, the Blackhawks have fired head coach Dennis Savard.
Joel Quinneville is in as the new head coach.
The timing is funny, as the Hawks played a great game last night.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.
The Hawks were kinda floundering.
The lines have been changed alot in the first 4 games.

We have $12 million tied up in 2 goalies.
They have been alternating starts.
Bulin has looked so much better than Huet, yet Bulin is the one they are looking to move.

There have been questionable moves in terms of players being sent down and brought up from the minors.

GM Dale Tallon has the great Scotty Bowman breathing down his neck, and he has made some very suspect moves.

I'd be shocked if Tallon isnt gone in the not to distant future.

The buzz around the team is higher than it's been in awhile.
Everyone in the organization is feeling the heat to produce.

I like that they are now gonna be held responsible for putting a good product on the ice, but as usual, not sure itshould all fall on the head coach.

I know why you'd fire a coach with 4 games left in a season... icon_wink

Speaking of teams firing their coach at the end of the season, there was a game in Atlanta tonight and the Atlanta team didn't score any goals. That's strange. I wonder who the gentleman in goal was for the team that played against Atlanta?

I don't think it was Nabby, Jiggy or Kippy....

I dunno, even with no supporting cast, Ilya Kovalchuk is still one of the top three goal scorers in the NHL (with Ovechkin and Iginla).

Awesome night in Pittsburgh last night, we beat the Laughs 4-1, and Crosby hit 3 career milestones, 100 goals, 200 assists and 300 points.

The Canucks are perfoming about as well as I expected them too, which now has them 1 game under 500. Other than the tragic performance they put into their game against the Cap's their effort has been excellent. However, the finish to their playmaking has been lacking and dismal with the added consequence that unlucky bounces now seem to be going against them. The more I watch them the more I pray the GM will make this the last year for the Sedins as Canucks. Now that the Canucks are a younger and grittier team the twins are starting to seem more out of place than ever. The talk around town I hear about them being tough in the corner and their willingness to always battle for the puck is moot IMHO as there's too many other things required by a 2-way team that they just don't do.

Might be an interesting season if the Wings don't or can't tighten up their defense.  6-1-1 is a nice start and plenty of offense, but every game except one has been decided by one goal and that one was from an empty netter.

I'm happy that the Sharks keep winning, but a little concerned with how many goals Nabby is giving up each game.  Definitely not a good sign.
