Please GOD, let there be a Flyers/Penguins first round series.

As if there wasn't enough bad blood - Joey Vitale knocked out both Grossmann (7-10 days) and Briere (indefinite) with injuries. These guys might just all hate each other to death.

Don't they play their last game of the regular season head-to-head too? Imagine if home-ice is on the line... there's a series I would hope to get eight games out of.

Yeah, it looks like it's going to be an 8 game playoff series starting this weekend slywink

I'm going to call it the "There Will Be Blood" series.  Might even trump a potential Nucks/Hawks Nucks/Bruins series.

All I know is my Pens better figure out how to play defense again.  We came out and dominated the flyers for most of the first period, and then it all fell apart.

There's actually a shot at three eight-game series this year - it's not looking unlikely that Washington and New York might play in round 1, as well as Philly/Pittsburgh and a very outside shot at Dallas/St. Louis.

I'd be in favor of all three of those coming to pass.

Agreed, just split up the superstars and make 2 #1 PP units.

Caps choked it away in the last 90 seconds of the game again, only no getting it back this time. Door's open, Buffalo.

The good news for the Canucks - their last 3 games are all against teams that won't have a postseason. The bad news - they've sucked this year on numerous occassions against the lowest ranked teams. I hope they buck that trend for their remaining games, but I'm half expecting the Ducks to end their 6 win streak tonight.

And oh yeah, I love these 8th place races.

No, it didn't.  Non-Red Wings with zero priors and no apparent injury got 2 games for the same hit.  Heck, you oughta listen to Shanahan on his review making it sound like Kopecky should have been trying to hit Quincey back which would not have made the hit as severe.   Roll Eyes

Chop the last 2 minutes off yesterday and today's games, and the Caps clinch it. Instead, Buffalo has all the momentum and only has to outpoint the Caps by 1.

Imagine how George McPhee must be feeling right now - it will not go kindly on him if the Caps miss, I imagine.

PT? Presidents Trophy? Pleeeeaz, lets call it by its proper name - the Pee Cup! That piece of hardware with the dish on top that's possibly useful as a urinal. Forgive me if I'm not excited, but IMO its the most worthless piece of hardware the Leagues' ever produced. Sorry, but I'll keep my attention on the 8th place finish line.   icon_twisted

Sadly my Leafs won't be going to the big dance-again.  I may have mentioned this before but I can't believe that I've been living in Japan for 7 years and the last time the Leafs were in it was BEFORE I left Canada.

Anyone else watched all of the NHL "Because it's the Cup" commercials?  I swear the guys at the NHL are marketing geniuses.

Yeah, though that too was a lot more likely before the last couple minutes of Florida's game when they managed to tie it and steal a point. They play the Caps Thursday, so if the Caps take 2 from them, win Saturday, and the Cats lose Saturday in regulation the Caps take 3rd. Florida just needs a single point, or for the Caps to not win out, so in Caps-land we're not holding out a ton of hope (unless we win in regulation Thursday).

Looking forward to be back in the playoffs and up against whoever wins that battle.

Imagine a NJ vs. FLA first round? The NHL may leave it off the schedule or force them to play at 3:30 AM to leave extra time for Penguins talk.

The series that never was!

Can't wait!

Come now...if New Jersey wins out, and Philly looses out, then NJ will slot into the #5 slot and face the Penguins.

Now why in the hell did the NHL not make a "Because it's the cup" video featuring the pens?!

Whoever plays the Pens will be on NBC (not NBC Sports) for every game, starting at 8PM EST.

The Playoffs will be re-named: Penguins Invitational

Should the Pens somehow lose 4 games in a series, the playoffs would then end and a Stanley Cup winner will not be declared due to lack of interest.

You must have missed the memo...the playoffs are being played as a formality...in the end the cup will be handed to Crosby no matter what.  If the Pens lose, they will have Crosby in disguise as one of the guys who brings the cup out...and just as the winning team is about to lift the cup, Crosby will grab the cup and lift it over his head in victory.

While I can't believe the Leafs blew 3-0, 4-2 and 5-3 leads (I found a way to watch it last night, and kept exclaiming "WTF! They're playing like the Caps!" icon_razz), those are exactly the types of leads my Caps have been blowing all season (and sometimes rallying from). So turnabout's fair play, and we were fortunate Toronto gave Buffalo all it could handle in back to back games.

I am extremely tired of my online Caps fans brethren, who basically want to fire the whole team every time we lose, and then mysteriously have nothing to say when we win. It's pretty much been like that since the disastrous game 7 of the second round Penguins series about 3 years ago, which was as close as we've gotten to sniffing the conference finals in almost 15 years now (the '98 run to the Finals by what was a medicore regular season Caps team). The last 3 seasons have already proven how useless/pointless/meaningless great regular season records are. I don't care Ovy has 3rd line grinder stats, if Green can't produce points to save his life, Backstrom's trying to just get up to speed after 50 games away from concussion etc. I just want 'em to get in the playoffs (if Philly and Boston do their jobs, so to speak), even back in, and then see what happens.

The Caps have been actually better on the road of late (their power play is abysmal at home, and something approaching mediocre on the road), so I'm not even sure they want home ice advantage in the playoffs this season.

Washington plays Florida (92 pts) and Rangers (109 pts).  Buffalo plays Philly (101) and Boston (98).

All Buffalo has to do is eke out one more point than the Caps.  ONE FREAKING POINT!

Of course there was absolutely zero bias in Steen being sent off for hitting Bertuzzi after a whistle and Franzen not being penalized at all for this well after the end of the 2nd period horn had sounded:

Franzen punching Backes and drawing blood well after 2nd period play has ended.  But tihs is not a penalty, supposedly.  I think all future opponents should be allowed to punch Franzen square in the face after the whistle has gone and he not be allowed to retaliate.  No penalties should be assessed.  Then - this is a perfectly legal play.

But I am supposedly just making this shit up.  Even the NBC announcers were wondering why there was no call on Franzen.
