So this is what a loss feels like. icon_biggrin

Great game, though. I love that Winnipeg crowd.

So what does everyone think of the new regional team alignment? There'll be no more divisions, but 4 conferences instead.

Conference A (west)
1. Ducks
2. Flames
3. Avalanche
4. Oilers
5. Kings
6. Coyotes
7. Sharks
8. Canucks

Conference B (west)
1. Blackhawks
2. Bluejackets
3. Stars
4. Red Wings
5. Wild
6. Predators
7. Blues
8. Jets

Conference C (east)
1. Bruins
2. Sabres
3. Panthers
4. Canadiens
5. Senators
6. Lightning
7. Leafs

Conference D (east)
1. Hurricane
2. Devils
3. Islanders
4. Rangers
5. Flyers
6. Penquins
7. Capitals

Top 4 teams in each conference advance to the playoffs and faceoff amongst each other for 2 rounds with the 2 western conference winners playing against each other and the 2 eastern conference winners doing the same. The 8 teams in the Western and 7 in the Eastern conferences makes me laugh. Yes I know the sports media are saying this is a sure sign now that the Coyotes will be moving to Quebec, but this is after all a league with Bettman at its helm - I'll believe that when I see it.  Personally I'm betting that move never happens with Bettman sticking his big ego in to prevent it, with the result that there'll be 8 teams in both western conferences for all eternity. I'm also hearing this is a good indicator the NHL will be expanding to 32 teams - yeah well, again I'll believe it when it happens. Oh well, always knew there was an Eastern bias in the league, at least now its blatantly spelled out.  Roll Eyes

After the first 2 rounds, I want the 4 conference winners to be seeded by regular season points. No geography involved.

If the semi-finals turn out to be Kings v Flyers and Blackhawks v Bruins, so be it.

Then you could get a Bruins v Flyers finals or something like that.

Oh fuck, get the Lightning and Panthers out of our conference. What happened to the Red Wings coming to the East? I'd take New York Rangers as well.

Brian Burke would disagree with you to no end. Looking at recent history there's only 2 teams in that conference that have consistently made the playoffs. This is the exact arrangement Burkie wants and I'm sure as a GM he had a big hand in the overall arrangement.

On a positive note, every team is supposed to play each other twice in a season. I'm hoping that one aspect still holds true at the conclusion of the pow-wow.

The one thing I don't like about the new setup is that say if you are in div B and you have 91 points and are in 5th place and the 4th place guy in div A (also west) has 90 points, the 90 point guy gets in.  It's like 4 conferences now instead of 2.

Yup, that's exactly what it is now. Meanwhile, since only 3 teams in the Eastern conferences get left out there'll be a few teams that finish barely above 500 squeaking in.  Its a great system for addressing the defecit between West Vs East Stanley Cup wins that has occurred since the lockout.

Still, I have to look at the postive at least for my home team, which is they'll certainly be doing less travel.  Besides this means the Sharks and the Canucks play more often, and based on how awesome and competitive that  game last week was that can't be a bad thing. slywink

16 out of 30 has been the standard for a while now.  Division winners were seeded 1-3 on each side, and the next 5 best records per conference got in regardless of division record.

Man, Canucks put on a clinic last night... they made the avs look like a Junior B team.  Glad to see they didn't get caught up in that dirty crap the AVS brought, knee-on-knee/cross check, taunting.

Will be a sad day when they lose Schneids, but he could be a first goaltender in any team right now.

Always been like that.

Teams 9 and 10 in the East could have more points than teams 7 and 8 in the West and they don't get in.

Unless there are no conferences, and you just take 1-16, you'll always have this problem.

Not any worse than under the current system when a division leader can have less points than seeds 4-8, but they get #3 because they are a division leader, ord in theory they could have less points than the #9 seed.

Only 4 GMs voted against this setup.  My wild guess at the 4: Detroit, Columbus, Florida, and Tampa Bay.

Why those 4?  Both Detroit and Columbus want to play in the Eastern time zone.  Why Florida and Tampa Bay?  WTF is up with them having to fly over all the other teams in the other conference to play the teams in their own conference?  WAS, PIT, PHI, CAR are considerably closer than all of those Canadian teams and Boston.

The Leafs have been very vocally against this for a long time and it's almost certain that Burke voted against this. Florida and Tampa Bay actually like this because they can now fill their arena every time OTT, TOR, MON comes to town (9 times a year in total).

Leafs have been sold to Rogers/Bell.  Not sure how I feel about that.  It seems that it would spell the end of Maple Leaf Hockey Night in Canada however.  That's kind of a shame as it's something I've grown up with.

Doubtful for Columbus for that reason. Looking at their schedule, almost all of their weekday games start at 7 (excluding a few away games on the west coast). That is enough time to get off work, grab a bite to eat in the Arena district (or near home, whatever) and then head to the game. Plus, Detroit is still in their conference, which is about the only game that sells out here. Similar with Detroit, they're playing primarily the same teams they play now, there's not really an unknown they'll have to play in conference (except maybe Winnipeg). I can't see either complaining, it's a small change in their schedule as the new conference is their old conference plus Dallas, Minnesota and Winnipeg.

According to ESPN, Tampa Bay and the Rangers were both no votes. They think the Devils and Montreal were the other two.

And seriously, Columbus losing on Thursday sucked. 3-1 until the last 1:30, then they score 2 (6 v 4 is impossible) to tie and a final in OT. frown

Who's doing play-by-play for CBC today for NJ v Mon?

He's pretty awful. Not one sided or anything but mispronounces names multiple ways, multiple times. I have no idea what he's talking about. He's a bit of a bore too.

Anyone?

Sad, sad news about Crosby.  I wonder what this portends for him.  The terrible thing about concussions is that once you get one it's so much easier to get one again.  I'm guessing he'll make another comeback but he'll get hit again and then it will be over for him.  Sad for him and sad for the NHL.

To be fair, before he fucked up the Dion Phaneuf trade and signed Jay Bouwmeester to a ghastly contract, he was a pretty good GM.  He certainly made all the right moves getting the Flames to the Cup finals in 2004 (stealing Kiprusoff from SJ, getting Rhett Warrener for a disgruntled Chris Drury), and some of the players he nabbed in trades (Huselius, Cammalleri, Bourque, Tanguay) were really quite good for what he gave up in return.
