Dean Lombardi speaking on the Ryan Smyth trade:
"The bottom line for me, I would have rather invested my money with Bernie Madoff than invest in Edmonton's word".

Yeah Dean is not happy that Edmonton didn't disclose a cyst in whatshisfuck's ankle. Apparently the Kings are looking at the NHL to either force Edmonton to take guywhodoesn'tmatter back or give the Kings a better draft pick as compensation.

Oh well. I don't understand these guys that want to hash it out in the media. What's Lombardi going to prove by slamming Edmonton over and over again in the LA Times? Is he trying to take over for Bryan Burke? Dude, either get over it or deal with it internally. It's been pretty much a non-story in Edmonton, I'd love to argue from the other side but Oilers management is collectively shrugging. Maybe he's still sore that Penner would apparently rather play in Edmonton than for the Kings? Based on this side show he's had running for three weeks now, I'm starting to buy into the theory that moving Ryan Smyth was his idea from the start and that he made up the story that Smyth asked for a trade (which Smyth denies - he's said that he said Edmonton would be his preference only IF the Kings wanted to trade him). Seems like a GM I kind of admired is maybe a bit of a slimeball.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that follow up from Smyth. Guess he requested it then. Nice to hear a player that wanted to come back to Edm, in that case. Ok, guess Lombardi's not a slimeball - still don't get the griefing in the papers though.

I mean it's pretty clear Gagne is an upgrade over Smyth, but LA didn't particularly want to trade the guy WITHOUT securing Plan B first. Afterwords, I'm sure there would be a handful of teams who'd take the offer of 'free' versus the Oilers offer of 'damaged goods'.

Penner on the offseason. Apparently he's not used to the offseason regiment the Kings run and he clearly sees Kopitar as his gravy train for his next contract (who can blame him). Question: Is that the biggest change, in terms of coming from Edmonton and the change in culture? PENNER: “Well, like I said, these workouts are different than I had encountered before. It’s really exciting to be part of something this special with a guy like (strength and conditioning coach) Tim Adams. As far as the culture, Edmonton was really young. Here, I think it’s more middle of the pack. We have some older guys, but I think we’re all around 27, 28, right around there, as the average age. I think we’ve got the perfect mix of players to do some damage.” http://lakingsinsider.com/2011/07/12/penner-talks-about-summer-workouts-expectations/

More on what has is deamed Mulletgate: For those following the saga of the minor Ryan Smyth trade, it continues. Dean Lombardi said today that there has been no resolution in the Kings’ quest to receive some compensation from the Oilers.
Lombardi spoke more openly about the trade particulars today. He noted that Colin Fraser, the player who came back to the Kings (along with a draft pick) for Smyth still has not been declared healthy by any doctor. Lombardi said he was told, by the Oilers, that Fraser would be “ready to play” on the Wednesday after the trade, but that a Kings doctor recommended surgery and that an independent doctor said Fraser could be examined again in two weeks to evaluate any progress in his recovery. Lombardi’s contention is that the Oilers have already misled the Kings, in terms of Fraser’s recovery time, and that’s why they are seeking mediation from the league.

I agree with the overall logic, but how the hell can they (Phoenix) not rank ahead of the Islanders or Maple Leafs?

The Sharks jerseys would be fine if they got rid of the horrific orange/yellow trim. That was just a ridiculously unnecessary addition.

That would be a damn good start. I don't really like the old school nod with the horizontal bars though. If they had something like the Kings 3rd jerseys (which I think are your new home?), I'd be all over that.

I agree with the overall logic, but how the hell can they (Phoenix) not rank ahead of the Islanders or Maple Leafs? Meh, I cry foul on the History bit. Out of those 31 years, during the 17 they were in Winnipeg they had next to no chance for a cup conteneder, or playoff performer, in the pre-cap era. Being a small market team at a time when the Candadian $ was low. They should just focus on the 14 year era in Phoenix - aka the Bettman ice in the desert micracle experiment.

I agree with the overall logic, but how the hell can they (Phoenix) not rank ahead of the Islanders or Maple Leafs? The Leafs had four final four appearances between 1993 and 2001. Those memories are what keeps us going during this period of absolute shitiness.

Osgood retires. Devils are announcing their new head coach today. Fake Don Cherry has the analysis:

Does Osgood get in the HoF? He's got the stats, but playing for Detroit will count against him. I've said it before, but if the Wings won Game 7 in 2009 he would've been the Conn Smythe winner and his place in the HoF a dead lock. Maybe not first ballot, but eventually. But they didn't so it's questionable.

Fine with me as long as Lou takes over in a playoff spot when DeBoer gets fired.

No way Osgood gets in the HoF. Far from a household name in hockey.

Those are nice clams for someone who had a great 1st half of the season and then more or less dissapeared for the rest of it. Oh well, I respect Yzerman a lot, so his confidence in him definitely counts for something.

I believe he's scored more goals in the past 2 seasons than anyone else in the league. 13 pts in 18 games during the playoffs isn't too shabby either. That deal was a no brainer and really does seem pretty reasonable all things considered.

Dan Steinberg of the Washington Post talks about Alex Ovechkin's shape. Apparently, he isn't very ripped during the season, either.

The main logo has two issues...
1. There will be a huge target on everyone's chest. 2. It looks sort of like they had someone's kid photoshop it.

I'd be a bigger fan of it if the main logo wasn't the main logo. As kratz said, it looks like a target. Otherwise, well done.
Now don't put piping on the jerseys, you dicks.

Yeah, the main looks like a roundel that would look good as a shoulder patch/third. Over at the NHL site, there's an alternate wordmark with the same script, less the leaf, and outlined in blue. And the last photo is "Special thanks to the Canadian Forces and the Department of National Defense", so I'd say the military iconography, even over and above the jet mark, is definitely what they were going for.

I like it a lot. Those logos have a lot more class than basically every expansion team that has come into the league since 1991. If putting a target like shape on themselves is good enough for the RAF then it's good enough for the Winnipeg Jets. I may have to get a new ball cap.
