Two weeks ago I finally went and got my first tattoo to honor my time in the Marines. I've waited quite a long time to make sure I got something that I really wanted, would have a lot of meaning, and had a tattoo artist that I respected enough to trust my arm to him. Here's a snap of it as it is currently (it's on my left forearm) This is the first phase - I'm going to try and go back in this weekend and get all the coloring work done on it and a couple additional details added and I'll try and post a follow up photo of it once it's all done.

I think you should have your GT avatar done on your left bicep. That way, if someone isn't scared away by the forearm tattoo, just lift your sleeve up - that will let them know just how bad-ass you really are!

What's the symbolism with the bulldog? Is that the USMC mascot?

Thanks for all the compliments. I'm really happy with it so far.
Unfortunately the tattoo parlor was just too packed today and I wasn't able to get in to get all the coloring and final details done - so I made an appointment to get it finished Wednesday night.

The history is that the Germans were so intimidated by the fierceness of the Marines that they encountered in battle that they referred to them as fighting like "dogs of the devil". As such the term "Devil Dogs" has become a nickname for Marines and has traditionally been represented by the Bulldog over the years.

It would be a better tattoo if you were actually a current or former marine. And of course, I keed.

Maybe we should have an official GT tattoo thread where we can all post.

I should go back and update that now that the wife has some new additions and I've had more work done on my leg.
I think I'll wait a few more days though so the wife's latest, a hummingbird on the back of her neck, can have a chance to heal up.

Maybe we can get rid of the push ups thread and replace it with the GT tattoo thread. That fad seems to have died out 6 months ago.

Got it colored the other day but the skin was really irritated so waited a few days for the redness and swelling to go down enough for a decent pic. But here's what it looks like now that color has been added.

Nice shading. Clean work, good detail. You should be pleased with your artist.
I've had the "itch" for a while lately, but it's one of those expenses that's easy to cut out of a tight budget. Plus, with multiple beach drips coming up in the next few months it would be bad timing, anyway, without enough time for a new tattoo to heal before being exposed to chlorine, saltwater, sunlight, etc. Perhaps in the fall.

Ok, here's phase 1 of my tattoo which was done a month ago. You can see the one I'm having covered up as well. I've never minded having a tattoo, I just didn't care for what was there as it didn't have much personal meaning. It was an impulse decision I made when I was 19 and had gone with my buddy to get his done. I had part of it removed but put that on hold when I moved a year ago. The subsequent rebooting/reinvention/awakening in my life inspired me to get a phoenix on my arm. It represents a lot more that I've been through in my life than just my move, but that's a PeteRock-ian post perhaps for another time. Though I'm not much of a writer. Through chance I found a local artist who's work was exactly inline with what I like. I went in yesterday and had about 80% of the coloring done on it. I'll post a pic of it in a day or so when it's looking better, but I'm scheduled to go back in 2-3 weeks to have to have it finished up. I'm much more in to Western art so it was inspired by European shields and crests. The bird is being colored in very dark with some feather highlights while the flames will go from yellow on the bottom to red on the top portions. Theo Mindell: http://www.spidermurphystattoo.com/theo1.html...although I'm already thinking I would really like to get a dragon at some point as I really connect with its symbolism as well.
