I mostly dug the trailer, though I think replacing Murphy's cold blooded murder with a car bombing is a plot mistake. I just think in Verhoeven's film it built empathy for him, and hatred for his killers in a visceral way.

Agreed there. That was disappointing.

A Robocop remake thats PG-13....don't give a shit. I'll fire up the directors cut of the OG Robo if I want to watch the way it should be done.

For a PG-13 Robocop, you'd have the same effect of watching the original on broadcast TV  icon_lol

The Dark Knight was pretty damn brutally violent for being PG-13, but yeah, I doubt the Robocop reboot will be able to compare.

What I don't get about the PG-13 rating is, I could understand it if they were going to release it during summer and wanted teens to be able to see it without parents. But imho, once it was pushed to a Feb. 2014 release, then why not "unleash" the gore if it serves the story. Because that release window doesn't spell blockbuster anyway, so why worry about pulling back for a PG-13 rating? Very curious.  icon_confused

The bizarre thing? I enjoyed this very funny indie comedy "In a World..." (set in the voiceover industry) over the weekend. Aside from a few choice cuss words, and a very chaste sex scene, there's no objectionable content and no violence to speak of. And it's rated R, and this Robocop film's going to be PG-13? Does that make any sense at all?  saywhat

At some point, imho, the film industry will maybe have to have a R-V (R for violence) and an R-L (R for language rating), something like that. It's ridiculous that something like, say, The Departed, and various mostly gentle comedies have the same R rating. And bizarre to have films rated R for a few cuss words, and violent films with max body counts rated PG-13.

I do feel the Robocop cast and the revamped general storyline sound promising -- at the very least not as clusterf*** as I was predicting earlier. At least promising enough I might check it out next year. I refused to even go see the Die Hard film early this year, and several summer movies I declined to see at all.

That's likely very much it. I'm not sure how the original was treated in terms of toys, but in this day and age, it would likely be difficult to sell toys based on an R movie to kids, without the kid wanting to see the movie.

I so wanted to see the original despite being a wee kid, and I didn't understand why my parents wouldn't let me.  Then years later I finally saw it.  "Ohhhhh."

Yeah, the cartoon would have done it, I'm sure. Funny thing is, I wasn't even aware of there being a cartoon. There was a lot of cool stuff I wanted to see as a kid, that for some reason or another wasn't available in all markets, which is where syndication became important. Networks back then, even down to the affiliates, were a lot more varied in the stuff they showed, and that a local affiliate could be showing something not offered in a different part of the country. I was only ever aware of the live-action TV series.

AICN compare the two posters of old and new

I guess they are not a fan of the new poster

Quote
Last week, most people shit all over the first trailer for the remake of ROBOCOP and now Sony (via their Twitter account) has released a new poster that probably isn’t going to help matters:

It gives us a better look at the new, sleeker design of Robocop, which is one of the main complaints people had (I saw lots of comments about him looking like something from Apple). It is also a very generic, boring poster with a stupid tagline. But let’s just compare this poster to the one sheet for the 1987 original:

While not one of the greatest posters ever, it is certainly light years better than this new one. The tagline of, “Part man, part machine, all cop” is so badass compared to the very lazy, “Your move” from the new one. Not to mention the original look of Robocop is much more striking than the new 21st Century version. Hopefully the marketing being so lazy and boring so far won’t be representative of the final film but I wouldn’t bet anything on it.

I just hope there's some satire and twisted humor in this.  The original Robocop is one of my favorite movies of all time and the trailer completely lacked those qualities, now to be fair the original Robocop trailer didn't showcase them but then it wasn't a reboot either.   As I said somewhere else, what's next Back to the Future reboot as a sci-fi thriller?  Ghostbusters as a pure horror movie?

It is going to suck and they know it because they set the release for Feb. 7.

Seriously, I don't want to be pessimistic but when you see a big name movie like this released at this time of year you know the studio knows it isn't going to be a blockbuster.

No horrible but like the Total Recall reboot I don't see much of the original in it.  And it looks blandly non-violent.

fyi, Monuments Men (George Clooney, Matt Damon) was moved from prime Oscar movie time (late fall) To Feb. 7 (bumping Robocop to Feb. 14), which seems like a 'no confidence' vote by the studio, although the release date delay is attributed to special FX work.

I saw the jazzed up 2nd Robocop trailer before Thor the Dark World. It was OK, but it just comes across as a needless remake featuring a talented cast that should be working on a better movie together (Samuel Jackson, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, and uh, That Surly Guy from The Killing).

New clip, probably will suck  icon_razz
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/65759

My problem isn't so much the style, the music and Kinnaman's flat voice, it's turning Robocop into a scrawny thing who wants to hide (!) behind girders, sprints and dashes and dives like he's in a John Woo movie.

The new look visually seems cool if scrawny, I just don't see the need for a remake to turn  Robocop into a gymnast instead of a tank-like intimidator.

You'll be surprised at how deep the science fictional speculation is here. The action is pretty damn fun too. ...  I never thought I'd be saying this, but Robocop is one of the best science fiction movies of the year so far. You won't want to miss it.

It drops a notch for the ending, but still enjoyable throughout.

It was garbage (and I'm a fairly forgiving viewer).  Pacing was bad, the action lacked any tension or excitement, writing stunk.  There were a couple enjoyable scenes throughout, and some of the concepts they were trying to address were interesting (focused on the humanizing aspect more), but it was just too poorly executed to pay off.  Dull
