To be fair this new Robocop is in SWAT, and black is tactical.

I think I'd rather have a great director, poor writer than the other way around though.

It's not actually a remake of Robocop. It's a movie version of The Tick!  icon_cool They just haven't painted it blue yet...

I can't tell if the sort of robe-cape is part of the armor-costume, or maybe he's just wearing it on the set to cover up the armor. Or maybe Robocop is modest about his private parts?  paranoid

I was trying to come up with excuses with the suit,i was hoping it was a failed attempt by ED-209 creators to outdo Robocop, only for it to fail, which then leads to them creating ED-209

But that teaser poster..thing ...that CeeKay put up,certainly looks like i can't make excuses for it anymore icon_evil

OK, if they get permission to license the 1970s TV show SWAT's theme, then I might be less displeased.  icon_razz

Getting back to our nerd-rage over the suit... OK I have no problem with SWAT black. It's just, imho, Robocop is supposed to be built like a tank. You punch him, your hand breaks; you pepper him with a machine gun, and the armor will take a beating but he/it will survive. That's his schtick. He/it is intimidating.

I don't find Joel in his black plastic/leather whatever with weirdo cape intimidating. If I was a criminal, I'd look at him and maybe start laughing. Or else I'd be going, "What the hell are YOU supposed to be?"

They certainly don't have to make him look exactly the way Rob Bottin envisioned him in 1987. But if they're turning him into some svelte, downright skinny suited dude who looks more like a cyber circus acrobat (never mind the color) or a member of Intel's Blue Men painted black, then to me you should just drop the Robocop moniker and call him something else. Call him "Cybercop" or something.

I'm sure their defense will be that they're "re-imagining," but to me the suit was at least half the original film's charm. I could've seen them revamping it in some way but a skimpy black caped bug suit wasn't what I envisioned. But, they didn't ask me. Or us.  disgust

Honestly I hope it's not turning into some Iron Man-clone-ish with force fields and rocket launchers and what not. Don't turn Robocop into ED-209 Part II.  icon_razz

Baaaaad feeling -- just read this got bumped from a fairly prime late summer Aug. 2013 release date to a (generally speaking) "where can we dump this piece of crap" release date in February 2014. This is posited as accommodating a release date switch for Neil Blokamp's "Elysium," which is getting the Aug. 2013 release date instead.

'Elysium' pushed to summer 2013, 'Robocop' to winter 2014 (EW report)

For comparison's sake, Verhoeven's Robocop released in July 1987, and the Irvin Kershner-directed Robocop 2 released in June 1990. Generally speaking, February is a dumping ground for films studios want to get rid of. Now March, which 300 proved can be a big box office month back in 2007, would give some hope but I really do get the impression the studio doesn't have confidence in this production.

The plus side? Well, now they have 6 more months to work on this, for better or worse.  paranoid Which isn't to say studios are are always right. I mean, someone in a suit thought Green Lantern would be a summer blockbuster for example...

That looks terrible. But at least they didn't put nipples on the suit... slywink

It could maybe be technically reasoned that this suit is of a different slightly more advanced generation if they're going with a soft-reboot, getting someone new into a suit, but keeping continuity. But I doubt that's what's happening. The suit doesn't even look all that advanced or robot-ish.

RoboFLOP...am I right?!

Seriously...they now have till 2014 to get this to a solid rated R.  The violence and ridiculousness was what made the movie completely awesome.  I have the Criterion Edition of the original and it is epic.  Dude getting shot on the model of Delta city?  You've not seen it until you've seen it from the front, from the side, from the back, from the front again, on top of the model, and it just keeps going, and going, and going, and going.  PG-13 will ruin this more than it's already ruined....

I was just thinking that, right? Very sad, cosmic timing. You could actually see some company offering to fill in for Detroit police (presumably getting underpaid and getting screwed over on their pensions etc.) through droid cops and drone cops.

Hollow Showgirls of Orange, coming soon to a 3-D IMAX theater near you!!!!  icon_razz

btw, they did make an even more terrible Hollow Man sequel some years ago.

imho, Verhoeven did great work if the script was up to par, and he really only has himself to blame for then doing so many turkeys based on turkey/thin scripts.

Sam Jackson still claims he gets to do a lot of colorful cussing in the Robocop remake, so I still suspect an R-rating is a possibility. But who cares? Clearly it got dumped in the February dead zone because it stinks (it had a fairly prime early August release date initially), the studio knows it, and it wants to write it off and not have anyone see it. So I don't know why the studio would even care about the rating. If it's going to be awful, at least let it be colorfully and memorably awful.  icon_razz

Oh yeah, if you've ever seen the butchered version of Robocop on basic cable, it just turns the entire movie into a mockery. It barely even makes any sense in that form.

While I'm not of the opinion the reboot HAS to be as sordid, gruesome (and Verhoeven's director's cut is even more so) and cuss-filled as Verhoeven's original, you could certainly argue that "being over the top" was the whole point of the movie and that tamping it down (whether through censoring, or a softened reboot) may just squelch it into a forgettable guns and robots action flick.

I still think there's a brief, quiet moment in the maligned Robocop 2 where Murphy's wife visits Robocop and wants to try to have some sort of relationship still, that could've been a touching storyline about "cyborg dilemmas" and could be for this reboot. Though in Robocop 2, he just yells at her, and the sequel goes back to puncturing eyeballs and its murderous 13 year old drug dealer kid.

It's too bad the reboot isn't coming out in August as originally planned -- Detroit just declared bankruptcy, and critics complain it can take a half hour or more to get police/ER to respond to calls (if at all). I mean, if ever there was a city that could use an autonomous drone/robot cop, it's Detroit right now, right this minute, sadly enough.

Lastly, the reboot imho must still have the line:
"DICK! ... You're... FIRED!!!!"  icon_cool

I'm sure Detroit will still be jacked up by the time this movie comes out...

I mostly dug the trailer, though I think replacing Murphy's cold blooded murder with a car bombing is a plot mistake. I just think in Verhoeven's film it built empathy for him, and hatred for his killers in a visceral way.

I didn't like the black armor in photos but in motion it seems cool, and some models seem more reminiscent of Rob Bottin's 1987 work.

Also, this Hero Complex interview with director Padhila gives me hope even if he mistakenly thinks Dwight Eisenhower was president in 1945 Roll Eyes

Let’s do this.” … They asked me, “So what’s your take on it?” And I actually had a take (which is the premise of the current movie), which is we’re in the future, and drones have been replaced by robots and are being used all over the world for foreign policy and war.

Kind of like instead of sending soldiers to Iraq, you send robots to Tehran. This is how we open the movie, with American robots in Tehran, because Iran has been invaded. The idea is, now soldiers don’t die in wars, so there’s no political pressure at home to end wars. Because the reason why the Vietnam War ended is because soldiers were dying. When you take the soldiers away and you have robots, that opens a can of worms.

The premise of the movie is everywhere in the world, robots are allowed, except in America, because Americans won’t accept that a robot can pull the trigger, that the robot can decide to take or not to take a person’s life in law enforcement. So this company is losing lots of money because it can’t sell robots in North America, so the solution is, “Let’s put a man in the machine and sell that.” That was the premise of the movie that I said to them in the very first day, and because they wanted to do it, that’s why I’m here.
interesting and while I remain skeptical of any movie pushed to a Feb. release date I can see this is just not a movie you can sell at summer or in the Thanksgiving-Xmas timeframe.
