Found these on my front step. They are very tiny..about the size of the head of a pin. They move pretty quick but like to stay bunched together.

Im in the US..TN to be exact.

I cant find anything on Sandkings except a book title.

These little guys are on a stone tile step in the brightest sun. Im surprised they are'nt cooked. My first thought was Aphids but they are'nt Aphids. They look like some type of beetle.

Good lord, those little buggers look scary - I have no idea.

Seeing things like that in a pack is always freaky.  Like yesterday, when I eradicated a whole pack of baby spiders - NOT COOL, not cool.

I have a pretty good program that can magnify digital images (.jpg, .gif, bmps, etc) and enhance them to a point where you can see every fine detail on tiny objects that would normally pixilate upon magnification.

I took your photo and had the program enlage one of the ants. As usual the detail is pretty amazing. Below is an enlarged ant - I've moved it down a bit for those who get the creeped out by bugs.

Got an answer for you from Smoove_B over at OO:

Quote
The tricky part is that you're not looking at an adult version.

What you've found is a 3rd or 4th instar of the Florida Predatory Stinkbug.

Probably more information about the beast than you ever wanted to know.

Edit:  Oops!  The link didn't transfer in the quote (of course!)

Daehawk, you realize that Sandkings was acutally a reference to an Emmy winning episode of the Outler Limits, written by George R.R. Martin?  There are no such insects...but on the safe side, you should burn your house down if you find any sand sculptures of yourself around the house.

Yeah but according to that link, at this stage in their lives they are pack hunters.    No I'm not kidding.

That's pretty cool for a stink bug.

I made the mistake of telling the wife what they were...she promptly went out and stomped them all. I think a few lucky souls survived the massacre and are plotting thier revenge. Im packing an overnight bag just in case it hits the fan.

Umm...they're pretty beneficial bugs, as such things go.

The bugs they eat are much worse (well, for plants anyway) than they are.

Do they actually stink?  If not, they need to fire their PR person.
