Purchase at auction results in macabre discovery

MAIDEN, N.C. - A man who bought a smoker Tuesday at an auction of abandoned items might have thought twice had he looked inside first.

Maiden police said the man opened up the smoker and saw what he thought was a piece of driftwood wrapped in paper. When he unwrapped it, he found a human leg, cut off 2 to 3 inches above the knee.

The smoker had been sold at an auction of items left behind at a storage facility, so investigators contacted the mother and son who had rented the space where the smoker was found.

The mother, Peg Steele, explained her son had his leg amputated after a plane crash and kept the leg following the surgery “for religious reasons” she doesn’t know much about.

“The rest of the family was very much against it,” Steele said.

Steele said her son, John Wood, plans to drive to Maiden, about 35 miles northwest of Charlotte, to reclaim his amputated leg, police said.

I say give him the smoker back, too.

Finding a human leg in a recently purchased meat smoker is just toetally unacceptable.  The leg-ality of such an incident definitely knee-ds to be questioned.  But, if the leg was kept for religious reasons, I'm assuming the religion in question was shin-toeism.  If the original owner is still interested in retreiving his lost limb, I'm sure he is most likely hopping on the next flight.  The two parties just knee-d to come to an agreement, legging it out until the end, toetally focusing on developing a solution, refusing to amputate ties until the situation is resolved.

I'm gonna bone up here and do some legwork. I'm going to go out on a limb here and surmise the meat of this story is that a non-smoker's calf ended up in a smoker? The didn't reveal whether or not the total price of the auction bid was soley for the smoker, or if it included the full body of the items. Other facts that have not yet come to light :whether or not the one-legged man was grilled in the interview, if he healed well, and if he feels like a complete idiot or if he feels like he's missing parts.

I'd like to see a picture of the one-legged man beside the smoker with the leg; I imagine it would be surreal, and he'd be beside himself without a leg to stand on.
