I had the opportunity to see the movie version of John Dies at the End a few weeks ago at a midnight screening in Seattle at the Seattle International Film Festival. The director, Don Coscarelli was unhand to answer questions. I actually got to meet him, very briefly (just a hand shake at a horror convention I was a guest at that weekend), and he was a very nice guy. Turns out he is a fan of my publisher Permuted Press - which is cool since Permuted originally published John Dies at the End before St. Martins bought it.
Anyway. If you have read the book, actually - even if you haven't, this is a fun, hyper-kenitic drug trip of a movie. It's 99 minutes of insanity and I wish it were out now so I could see it again. Unfortunately it won't be out until October at the earliest. The first couple of minutes of the movie are straight out of the book. After that, as the director explained before the movie started, the other 350 pages of the book had to be condensed down to a 100 page screenplay. But it's all good because he did a great job of capturing the manic nature of the book.
The main actor is a new comer, forgot his name ... but he was perfect. The guy that played John was pretty good, but David's character stole the show. Paul Giamatti was awesome and the ending, while a bit different that the book, was weird and awesome at the same time.
Anyway. The movie was a blast. I don't ever do stuff like go to midnight screenings so it was a very cool treat even though I was absolutely exhausted before the movie even began.
I'll try to get a full review done in the next week or so and post it on my website. Good movie and I can't wait to see it again.

Uh, what the heck is it about? I do have much affection for the first two Phantasms, and Bubba Ho-Tep (which I tend to tell people is the best movie you've probably never seen ). So I love some of Don's stuff, just not all of it. Glad he's still around though.

I sense sarcasm in the SPOILER warning because of the movie title. Gotta admit, it's a great title. The book is hard to describe so check it out on Amazon. BTW, the author David Wong (the name of the main character in the book) is the pseudonym of Jason Pargin - senior editor at cracked.com. Trailer

Just rented this last night and promptly declared it my movie of the year. Just downloaded both books to my iPad and plan to watch the movie again sometime today

I can't wait to see this. The book was the only horror novel I read this fall that was actually horrific - and kept me laughing at the same time.
Hope they did the book justice.

I can't wait to see this movie again. If you get HDNET the movie will be on later this month. I think it's the 23rd but it may be the Wednesday after. I don't know if I can wait a few weeks to see it again, may have to order it on itunes this weekend.

Been sorta following this on Cracked as it was written by one of their writers. Been looking forward to seeing it but haven't been able to get any on demand releases... EDIT: The trailer is awesome

I don't see it on their online schedule. Maybe next month or different network?

Watched it Friday night and really enjoyed it. I'm usually not a fan of movies that place in drug induced worlds, dreams or virtual reality as they just make me feel like there's very little consequence to any actions taken by the characters involved, but this one sidestepped that limitation very deftly.

Too bad... I read it when it was still online, I'll have to find a time to checkout the movie via OnDemand. Thanks for checking...

I watched this the other night and it might have been because I was so tired, but as the movie went on I really started to lose interest. I ended up not particularly enjoying it, but I did catch myself nodding off towards the end.

finished the book last night. maybe it's due to the 4 book intermission where I read the Game of Thrones, but this one really seemed like two different stories patched together. and I really wasn't feeling any kind of suspense or threat of death, despite the title of the book. it was enjoyable though.

It definitely feels like two stories, I agree.
