I love, love, love metal. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Ulver's Bergtatt. Here's a good song from the album:

The album artwork for the new Beastwars album (due out on April 19) is fucking epic.  No Clean Singing gave it a great review...can't wait for this one.

Only one album purchased in March, Finntroll's Bloodsvept.  If you liked Finntroll before, you'll love this album.  If you didn't, Bloodsvept won't do anything to change your mind.

It's not metal, but I also picked up the new David Bowie album, which is absolutely brilliant.  Except for the cover, which blows.  I honestly thought it was just placeholder art and that there was no way it could actually be the cover:

April looks to be a better month with both new Beastwars and new Amorphis on the horizon.  Heard a few tracks from Amorphis' Circle album, which have been really good.

Side note:  I also had to share what might be the most insane album cover I've seen in a while.  It's from a Dallas-based band called Cleric for their Gratum Inferno album.  Behold...

Yeah, he's been fucked up from the spider bite for like two years.  Shitty, shitty news.  Guy was the best of that pair by a mile.  Plus he wasn't a huge douche like Kerry King.

Yup.  King is a colossal dickbag, and Hanneman was the one with all the writing chops anyways.

I don't listen to Slayer much anymore, but it's sad to think that with Lombardo out and Hanneman gone, the band that basically got me into metal in the first place doesn't exist anymore.   icon_frown

Did you see that crap earlier this year about how King was taking 'Slayer' on the road in Europe this summer... without Lombardo, without Hanneman, and without Tom Araya either?  Pretty sure that's not Slayer.

eek I missed that one.  King's done a lot of ridiculous shit over the years, but that one may take the cake.

Been a couple months since the last update.  Here goes, best to worst:

Sul Ad Astral - Sul Ad AstralBlack metal meets shoegaze.  Got an atmospheric, spacey, meandering vibe that took me by surprise.  It took a few listens to really click, but I've been thoroughly enjoying it since it did.

Shade Empire - Omega Arcane.  Symphonic black metal with an epic feel.  Very solid and catchy songwriting as well.

Azure Emote - The Gravity of Impertinence.  Avant-garde black metal with an industrial flavor.  Seemingly goes in every direction at once and is really quite fun.

Immolation - Kingdom of ConspiracyStraight up death metal from this longstanding outfit.  Not many surprises, but a solid batch of tunes.

Voyager - UniVers.  I loved the last two albums by this Aussie group, and figured I'd round out my collection.  Not nearly as strong as the last two, but still some damn good prog.

Polkadot Cadaver - Last Call in Jonestown.  Starts really strong, but kinda peters out towards the end.  It's almost "by the numbers", which is strange for a band like PDC.  Was really hoping for a better effort...not bad, but not particularly good either.

Ghost - Infestissumam.  Maybe the most disappointing sophomore effort I've ever heard.  The last album reveled in it's ludicrous "sing along to Satanism" vibe, but the songs were catchy as hell.  They seemed to take themselves entirely too seriously this time around, and the album suffers for it.  It's simply just boring.

Non-metal purchases:
Skinny Puppy - Weapon.  SP has been brilliant for the last 30 years, and this album is no exception.  There is a remake of "Solvent" on this album that sounds as fresh today as it did when it was released 25 years ago.  My album of the year so far.

Project Pitchfork - Black.  Had no idea these guys were still around.  Surprised to hear a damn strong industrial EBM album.

How to Destroy Angels - Welcome Oblivion.  I adore nearly everything Reznor touches, but holy shit, this stuff is dull.

Huh... I actually think this is a much better album than the first one, though it doesn't have a song as individually good/catchy as 'Ritual'.  It's hard to call this band 'metal', though.  They just sound like a melodic classic rock band with some horror movie overtones.

Speaking of 'not metal', the new Queens of the Stone Age is the album of the year... so far at least.

My favorite heavy album so far this year - Kvelertak - Meir:

Not nearly as much metal in my life these days...it's amazing what having twins does to your disposable income.  Still, have picked up a few things.  Some good...some not so much.

Witherscape - The Inheritance.  Dan Swano (former Edge of Sanity frontman) can do no wrong, and this is yet another stellar outing.  Quite a bit mellower than some of his previous efforts, but it can still kick ass

Tursas - Turisas2013.  Ridiculously stupid album title and artwork aside, this album is a hell of a lot of fun.  Not as epic or structured as previous efforts, but the songs just...work.  It's been in a nearly daily rotation for me since it came out in August.

Amon Amarth - Deceiver of the Gods.  Nothing terribly fancy here, but they seem to finally shedding the "AC/DC of death metal" label with some wicked cool riffs.

Skeletonwitch - Serpents Unleashed. Technically not out yet, but I have it pre-ordered and have listed to it through various streams about a dozen times so it makes the list. smile  These guys are a blast, as always.   Brutal, but still sounds like they're having fun.

Nekrogoblikonn - Power.  Worth it just for "No One Survives"

Kalmah - Seventh Symphony.  Symphonic black metal.  Still trying to decide whether I love or hate this album.  Works really well, but only when I'm in the right mood for it.

Wolfheart - Winterborn.  I love the symphonic and atmospheric elements, but it starts to lag when he gets into the chugga-chugga bits.  A mixed bag.

Manegarm - Legions of the North.  Some pretty straightforward Viking metal.  Sort of "by the numbers", but a decent listen.

Tyr - Valkyrja.  As with most Tyr albums, I love the music...until the singer opens his mouth.  Not much exception here.

A couple notable non-metal purchases:

Frontline Assembly - Echogenetic[/url].  An absolutely epic feat of musical engineering.  A stellar album from start to finish.

Nine Inch Nails - Hesitation Marks.  Lacks the anger of Trent's early stuff, but his songwriting chops have improved exponentially.  Enjoyed this far more than I expected to.

While discovering Spotify has expanded my metal listening exponentially, it also means I haven't actually purchased any albums in a long time.

That said, the new Behemoth album The Satanist is just...wow.  Apparently Nergal's brush with death (had leukemia in 2010, which required a bone marrow transplant) put him into full-on beast mode.  This is one hell of a comeback.  The video for the title track (which is very NSFW)

FWIW, that's probably the weakest song on the album.  Actually kinda surprised they chose it to get the video treatment (which I'm not crazy about either, but it fits the mold of their previous stuff), with better tracks available.

Cool.  I'm not a huge fan of Enslaved (although I did like that RITTIRIRITIRITIR-whatever album), but I do love me some Amon Amarth and SW.  Only bad thing is that it's an all-ages show with no alcohol.  frown

Here's hoping it's a step in the opposite direction from the last one. While I didn't hate it like a lot of people did, it was certainly no Crack the Skye or Blood Mountain.
