This is quite a month for music. Hitting today -

Dream Theater - Dramatic Turn of Events. DT post Portnoy seems to be pretty damn good

Anthrax - Worship Music. Loving the new one and the return of original vocalist Belladonna

Arch / Matheos - Sympathetic Resonance. Back in the 80's there was this amazing band called Fates Warning. The singer, John Arch, quit after a few albums so he could be with his family. This album sees him, Jim Matheos - original guitarist, and Frank Aresti - also an old hand, returning in fine form.

A note on the new Opeth. I also heard the new album and I am really disappointed. Let me say that I have been a fan since Orchid and have seen them live eight times. I loved Damnation. Heritage is boring. I hate to say it but the whole album put me to sleep. Maybe that was the point? I do like a the single that was released a few weeks ago and way dig the 70's vibe on it. But as a whole? <snooooooze>

So.

B+ to a solid A.... the jury is still out... but I haven't really listened to anything else all week, so that's gotta be a good sign.

'The Creature Lives' is great.

Super stoked I got tickets to see Mastodon/Dillinger Escape Plan in November.  Will be epic.

Black Sleep of Kali

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZNqp76zePk

http://blacksleepofkali.bandcamp.com/

You can get their first EP from that second link for 'name your price'.  I gave 'em $5.  Bought the newer one off of amazon mp3 for $8.  Denver boys... I'm going to have to get down there and see them!

My latest batch:

Skeletonwitch - Forever Abomination

Voyager - The Meaning of I

Symbolic - Scarvest

The Ruins of Beverast - Rain Upon the Impure

The Ruins of Beverast - Foulest Semen of a Shattered Elite (ridiculous name, but pretty decent doom/death metal)

Sculpting Atrocity - Ambiguous Deity Obscurus

I have to say that Sympathetic Resonance, by Arch/Matheos is amazing.  Since I've received the cd, I've listened to it everyday for the last two weeks.  I was a huge Fates Warning fan - Awaken the Guardian / Spectre Within being two of my favorite metal albums.  This one is up there.

Gratch, where do you find these bands?  I couldn't find Sculpting Atrocity on Amazon to listen to samples.  The Skeletonwitch samples are excellent - thanks for the find.  I've never been a big fan of death metal growling vocals, but I came across Metalocalypse a few weeks ago and love it.  Got the Dethklok mp3s, and went and dug out my old Death cassettes!  Different vocals, but got me back into this genre again.

New Anthrax is excellent.  Almost got to see the Big 4 at Yankee Stadium a while ago.

Also check out the new Devin Townsend Project double cd: Deconstruction + Ghost (or get them separately).

Metal blogs, mostly.  My favorites are Number of the Blog and Angry Metal Guy

Sculpting Atrocity isn't very good.  Took a chance on a friend's recommendation...you're not missing out on much.

I'm really looking forward to the debut album from Demisery.  It's the death metal project from one of my favorite instrumental metal artists, Keith Merrow.  This album is very riff-driven death metal that kicks all kinds of ass.  You can stream it from Metal Sucks.

I caught the Cynic show last week, which was absolutely incredible.  They are one of those bands that I never in a million years thought I'd get the chance to see.  Crowd was tiny (there were maybe 75 people there), but they still put on a remarkable show.  I couple vids I took:

King of Those Who Know

Adam's Murmur

Next show will be Ohgr next week (not really metal, but I The Weghted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you. anything from Ohgr/Skinny Puppy), and I'll be seeing Ghost in January.  That one should be a blast.

I never really heard of red fang but Dillinger is my all time favorite band and Mastodon are up there too with some of the best newer bands, would be so perfect if they could tour in Europe too together. Although I also enjoy the smaller shows that are sometimes basement sized with dillinger over here.

Saw dillinger in Manchester halloween last year, flew over there from Denmark and it was so crazy and awesome. We ended up getting really drunk later and ended up at some bar that played metal all night, there was people crowdsurfing in the damn bar at times.  icon_lol

I was dressed up as greenman for the show itself and the whole band was wearing black metal makeup and shit, was hilarious as you know how little it actually fits them

and me way too drunk with Billy later, getting up 7:00 the next day to fly back to Denmark was such a pain.

November's haul:

Cynic - Carbon Based Anatomy

Cynic - Re-Traced

Demisery - Hive of Mutation.  The first death metal album from solo genius Keith Merrow.  Riffs galore, very much in the Skeletonwitch vein...Kratz, you might like this one.

Voyager - I am the Revolution.  Prog-metal goodness.

Falls of Rauros - The Light that Dwells in Rotten Wood.  Atmospheric folk-metal.  Fans of Agalloch will love it.

Falls of Rauros - Hail Wind and Hewn Oak

Vallenfyre - A Fallen King.  A doom metal "supergroup" of sorts, with members from Paradise Lost, At The Gates, and My Dying Bride.  Nasty, crunchy, and brutal...way cool.

And the non-metal selection of the month is Primus - Green Naugahyde.  Just 'cause.

I can't link to it for reasons that will become obvious if you watch it... but check out the new video on youtube for Cephalic Carnage - Ohrwurm.

It's really fucked up.  Also, it features a pretty incredible rack. Stay till the end if you can stomach it.

Pick-ups from December:

Jungle Rot - Kill On Command:  Pretty straightforward death metal.

Powerwolf - Blood of the Saints:  Gloriously cheesy power metal with a powerful singer, operatic elements, and even a pipe organ rounding out the bombast.

Sear Bliss - Arcane Odyssey:  Symphonic death metal with some unique instrumental elements such as violin and trombone.

40 Watt Sun - Inside Room:  After seeing this one on multiple "Best of 2011..." lists, I had to give it a shot.  A rather remarkable slice of doom metal, with very powerful (clean) vocals.  Highly recommended.

Sub Rose - No Help for the Mighty Ones:  Found out a friend of mine that I work with used to play in this band.   thumbsup  Another one that made a number of year end lists, but probably my least favorite of the December purchases.

Cormorant - Dwellings:  The music isn't nearly as cool as the cover art, but it's a decent enough prog/metal album.  Would be a lot better with a different vocalist, as this guy kinda grates my nerves.

Indeed.  I had resisted Amazon's repeated attempts to recommend Red Fang to me, but after watching their videos (can't miss Wires) I figured I owed it to them to buy Murder the Mountains.

Gratch thats some good shit....like it alot

So here is my loot from the Google sale over the holidays.   Got some stuff i really like.

#1 Volbeat- Beyond Hell/Above Heaven.   I read alot of heavy metal blogs and have heard their song Evelyn (lead vocals by Napalm Death) before.   I've read nothing but good things about Volbeat but never took the time to go beyond the song Evelyn (which kicks ass btw).   Let me tell you, this album and band has such a unique style it's really a breath of fresh air.   Anyone with an appreciation for good music needs a listen to them.   They will be in Denver next month with Megadeth and Motorhead and i think i'm gonna go just to see them.   Google some of their music, very cool stuff.

#2. Exhumed- All guts/No glory.   Liking this album alot too.   They got the death metal screams and growls going on, but kinda simultaneously.   Nice guitar riffs as well.   Good purchase.

#3. Vader- Welcome to the Morbid Reich.  I know they've been around forever, but never gave them alot of listening.   Kinda standard death metal, but i really like the singers voice.   Like this album good too.   Be willing to check out their older stuff.   Best sound is Decapitated Saints.

#4.  Abysmal Dawn- Leveling the plane of existence.  Good stuff here too.   Death metal with more melodic sound.   Great guitar riffs.   Growling vocals but you can actually understand most of the lyrics.   Favorite song is My own savior.

#5. Deicide- To hell with God and The Stench of Redemption.   Never listened to Deicide but took a chance.   To hell with God is decent, but the Stench of Redemption is heavy and rocks.  They are here in March with Jungle Rot and i think i'll check this show out.

Jungle Rot- Kill on command.   As mentioned by Gratch earlier, pretty standard Death Metal.   Nothing really stands out on the album, but it's a fun listen.  Gonna go see them with Deicide in March.

Final thoughts, Volbeat is awesome.   Got some good stuff to listen to for awhile.  I'm hoping Google Music does another sale like this in a few months because there are some releases coming out soon i wanna get.

I'm not sure about Volbeat.  I've listened to a few of their songs, and they just come across as rather cheesy.  Maybe I need to pick up a full album and give it a dedicated listen.  Liked that Abysmal Dawn song though...think I'll grab that album today.

For those who like Agalloch-y folk-metal, be sure to check out Oak Pantheon.  Simultaneously beautiful and devastating.  You can pick up their EP (name your own price, even) here.  I've had it on a non-stop rotation the last few days.

Since I'm headed out of town for the rest of the month, I'll go ahead and post January's albums now.  From most favorite to least with a couple of duplicates from previous posts:

Thy Catafalque - Rengeteg.  I would have bought this album if it was simply the opening track and someone reading the phone book for 20 more minutes.  I absolutely love this song, and the rest of the album is phenomenal.  It's not entirely metal, and strays into some industrial, jazz, tribal, folk, and other styles while keeping a brutal edge throughout.  An early frontrunner for album of the year.

Oak Pantheon - The Void.  Atmospheric folk metal done remarkably well.  This is a band to keep your eye on.

Mors Subita - Human Waste Compression.  A nice, happy, slice of death metal that will tear your face off.  smile

Spires - Spiral of Ascension.  Heavily influenced by early Opeth and Cynic, these guys have crafted a remarkably solid melodeath album.

Velnias - Soverign Nocturnal.  Doomy, gloomy sludge.  Sounds like Wolves in the Throne Room, but with better vocals.

Skagos - Ast.  A very solid doom/folk metal album, but the ultra lo-fi production was kind of a turn-off.

Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows.  The only way I can describe this is that it's "happy" metal   Doesn't seem to have that fierce edge to it and ends up lacking as a result.

Black Skies - Hexagon.  Kyuss inspired stoner rock.  Decent enough if I'm in the mood for it, which really isn't very often.  It mostly just bored me.

Stormlord - Mare Nostrum.  Thought I'd enjoy their brand of industrial infused metal, but it doesn't really have any hooks.  Every song just kinda plods along, and they all sounded pretty much the same.

Woods of Ypres - Woods IV:  The Green Album and Pursuit of the Sun and Altar of the Earth.  Grabbed these after hearing a couple songs and really liking their overall sound.  They've got a Type O Negative meets Sisters of Mercy vibe, which was pretty unique.  Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics before buying.  While the music is great, these are honestly some of the stupidest, most inane lyrics I've ever heard, in any genre.  They're bad to the point that I can't even put them aside and just enjoy the music, they are that completely ridiculous.

I also picked up a few non-metal albums from The Moon & the Nightspirit after finding out their vocalist handled some of the duties on Thy Catafalque's masterpiece.  This Hungarian folk duo makes some beautiful music in the vein of Dead Can Dance.  These are down at the bottom of the list because they're not metal, not because I don't like them.  All three albums are amazing, with Rego Rejtem being my personal favorite.
