My wife and kids got me tickets to www.heavyto.com for Father's day. Super stoked to finally see The Sword.

They are pretty good. He kind of mails in the vocals live, but... the music is good. Here's a documentary about, essentially, stoner metal and heavy music... pretty cool: Such Hawks Such Hounds

For those looking for something a little (ok, a lot) different in their metal, check out the new album from Unexpect, Fables of the Sleepless Empire. You can stream (or buy) the whole thing here. This is basically insanity put to music.

For fathers day I got tickets to www.heavyto.com in Toronto. I saw: Children of Bodom Anthrax Motorhead Megadeth and a few others. The Sword got held up at the border.. fuck! My order of favorites 1. Megadeth - My god Mustaine can shred. Can't believe he gives too fucks about what happened with Metallica, they were the headliners and totally killed it. 2. Children of Bodom - Man these dudes can play, awesome set and he's a great frontman. 3. Anthrax - Thrash metal is alive and well, nice to see Joey Belladona back with the band he's great! 4. Motorhead - I'm glad I finally got to see them, and although not metal by any means was a neat show. Mikkey Dee is one of the best drummers I've ever seen. You can tell Lemmy is getting old, and no.. we couldn't understand a word he said. Opeth - zzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Sorry fans, but I don't get it. Total snoozefest, and Bodom deserved their set length for sure.

I love Opeth and i'm excited about seeing them for the first time this October. However, most either love or hate them. I'm in the camp of loving their music.
That's a great lineup though. Never seen Motorhead live, but i bet they are great. Sucks The Sword didn't make it, gotta be really disappointing. I saw the setlist for Megadeth and man i think they've played the same set for every show for well over a year now.....other than the new song from their upcoming album.
Regardless, looks like an awesome show.

Whoa, just looked at the lineups and man there are some great bands between the two days. Slayer, Mastodon, Devildriver, Volbeat, Exodus, Diamond Head, etc. Man i would be there both days if i could.

I would not call this metal. I would call this... I dunno. Unpleasant? Yeah, didn't figure it would be your cup o' tea (although I do think it would qualify as metal). It scratches my itch for something vastly different though, and I haven't been able to stop listening to it. I like Cephalic Carnage, but don't think they're much outside the box of standard death metal. A few better riffs perhaps, but they don't really do anything different.

Like I said, they were awesome at Heavy TO. Joey Belladona is hilariously awesome. They did play that song, it was great. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fc706ugyzQI'll be seeing them for sure when they tour that new record. Also, Kyuss is touring again. FTW.

I'm a huge Opeth fan. That being said I think I will miss the growly vocals. The new song is fantastic, it starts like something straight out of 1972. How much of an Opeth fan am I? I have seen them live 8 times which is more than any other band in my many years of concert going.
Also, the new Anthrax song is just fantastic. Anthrax is back and singing about zombies. Awesome!

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to Opeth's and Anthrax new ones.
I recently purchased both Black Country Communion records and I love them. Each listen gets better and better. One of the best new bands that has come out in a long time. Highly recommend this group to any metal/rock fan.
For concerts, I'm wanting to the see the epitaph Judas Priest concert. I think the setlists they have been playing on this tour are awesome. Here is one from a recent show. 01. Rapid Fire 02. Metal Gods 03. Heading Out To The Highway 04. Judas Rising 05. Starbreaker 06. Victim Of Changes 07. Never Satisfied 08. Diamonds And Rust 09. Prophecy 10. Night Crawler 11. Turbo Lover 12. Beyond The Realms of Death 13. The Sentinel 14. Blood Red Skies 15. The Green Manalishi 16. Breaking The Law 17. Painkiller
Encore 1:
18. The Hellion / Electric Eye 19. Hell Bent For Leather
Encore 2:
20. You've Got Another Thing Comin'

I like Testament and Anthrax... I tried to get into Overkill when I was younger, but I can't stand Bobby Blitz' voice. Don't know much about Death Angel...

As I wander into an area were I never go ordinarily... Just out of curiosity, have you ever heard of a guitarist name John Corabi? He played with Ratt and Motley Crue when Vince Neil was off on walkabout. Never heard about him before, but apparently, he's the brother of a woman from my church?

Interestingly, this album will be similar to Deliverance, in that it will have zero harsh/growly vocals. Nice... I grabbed an older Opeth album from an Amazon sale; I was digging the music at first - until the Cookie Monster vocals kicked in. I may have to give their new album a chance. Just out of curiosity, have you ever heard of a guitarist name John Corabi? He played with Ratt and Motley Crue when Vince Neil was off on walkabout. Never heard about him before, but apparently, he's the brother of a woman from my church? Cool - I'm a fan of Corabi, not so much a fan of the Crue. But the album he sang on is some of their best work, due mostly to Bob Rock's production and the lack of Vince Neil. I still listen to it from time to time. He was in a band called E.S.P. with Bruce Kulick/Eric Singer (KISS) - they put out a couple of decent, if not great, albums.

I heard an Ensiferum song on Liquid Metal (Sirius XM Ch. 40) today and was intrigued. I grabbed their album Iron off of iTunes and instantly loved it. That was quickly followed up by From Afar, Victory Songs, Dragonheads, and Ensiferum (ST).
I remembered this thread and had to come back and praise all that is Ensiferum. Sure enough it was covered on page 1. I can certainly see how Kratz labelled it LARP metal. For me though, growing up in Nova Scotia, folk music has always been a really big influence. It's a shame I've missed out for the last 15 years or so.
Better late than never!

What else does a metal video need? EDIT: Oh, and I just realized the album is out... downloading. $7.92 on amazon mp3.

For those interested, NPR is streaming the entire new Opeth album right now. EDIT: Just finished listening...this is a wholly remarkable album. I was skeptical due to the lack of growly vocals (which I think Ackerfeldt does better than anyone in the biz), but they have put together an album that is haunting, ethereal, and beautiful, yet totally manages to kick ass as well. I didn't think they'd be able to top Ghost Reveries, but Heritage - much to my surprise - just might do that.
