Grimwar, based on your description of that album, you should check out that Black Tusk.
I gave them a listen and they are pretty good. Reminds me a bit of Mastodon or Baroness. I think I'll pick this one up.

Hey Gratch, saw your post about Draconian an Swallow the Sun, two of my favorite bands, and wanted to recommend Nox Aurea - Ascending in Triumph (if you haven't already heard them) http://www.myspace.com/noxaurea

Bought another interesting one today: Black PyramidDoomy, stonery, very Sabbath/Sleep-esque... vocals are hit and miss... but cool overall.

Oh, and that Sword album is also awesome (though a couple songs lose me): We went to the show in Denver... one of the few they played before the drummer quit and they had to cancel the rest of the tour (which they have since rescheduled). Very, very good live...

And then just today, for some reason, Skeletonwitch just... CLICKED for me Surprising...figured you'd hate the vocals. I've been really digging The Chasm lately. The Spell of Retribution might be the best album I've bought this year. Death metal with some absolutely killer riffs. Also have to give props to Nechochwen. Native American inspired folk metal, heavy on the "folk". Azimuths to the Otherworld is a pretty awesome album.. Liked it so much I actually bought the physical CD...the first I've done in years. Check out "Winterstrife".

On another note, I'm surprised so many of the bands in this thread have been recorded in my little city of Cola S.C. at a studio ran by an old acquaintance of mine.

A couple new additions this week: Ghost - Opus Eponymous: Some 70's sounding stoner rock with a satanic bent. Keep of Kalessin - Reptilian: Think Behemoth with more orchestral elements and better riffs. Lyrics can get a little goofy, but they're fast, loud, and kick-ass. Agallloch - Marrow of the Spirit: What can I say, I'm a total sucker for folk metal, and this is about as good as it gets.

Amazing...Triptykon's (from the lead guy from Celtic Frost) new song from their new EP. I'm a dead-head, Tom Waits, James Brown fan (to name but a few) but I love my metal, and this song is phenomenal. If you like it slow, heavy, and evil , this is for you.

Not too shabby... might have to pick up that album. Why is there like 3 minutes of silence at the end? I'm assumng it's not like that on the cd, right?

I got a real Blue Oyster Cult vibe from Ghost, which is not bad. Pandora clued me in on Electric Wizard; very Sabbathy stoner metal. Dopethrone and Come, My Fanatics[/b] are their best albums, their later work doesn't measure up for me. Oh, I hadn't heard Baroness before this thread. Thanks. A lot.

Ghost is sort of cool... but then I saw some live stuff, which was retarded, and the talking part into that horrid solo... other than that pretty cool. Sure the live set is goofy, but you have to admit it fits the shtick they're going for. Will check those out, thanks. I can only handle stoner rock in small doses, but certainly dig it every once in a while.

A surprisingly good "Best Metal Albums of 2010" list (minus the WTF inclusion of Ratt) And yes, the Agalloch album is that good.

If you're looking for a good overview of great metal albums that have come out this year, each of the reviewers over at Number of the Blog has put together their "best of" lists. There's a shiteload of amazing albums, and those lists are going to cost me a lot of money in downloads over the next week. I'm getting an Amazon gift credit and have already planned out how most of it will be spent: - Fleshgod Apocolypse - Decrepit Birth - Wormrot - Ihsahn - Immolation

Been on an instrumental metal kick lately...a few favorites: - Keith Merrow (you can DL Keith's first two albums for free at his site) - Cloudkicker- Tre Watson (Tre's latest album is a "pay what you want" deal on his bandcamp page) - Periphery

I typically like screamy/growly vocals, but that dude's voice grates on my nerves. Pass. I'll stick to these guys for my fill of vikings and mead and such. I finally broke down and picked up a couple Skeletonwitch albums a couple weeks ago. I'd heard their stuff before, but never bothered buying any. Damn fine stuff, that. On the more epic and/or symphonic side of things, I've really been digging on Septicflesh lately.

Thanks for the heads up on Agalloch. I picked up all four of their albums after listening to some samples. Then I just happened to find out they were coming to play locally. These guys were outstanding live. Really glad I got out to see them as they haven't toured through here since 2004.

Listening to classic rock/80's stations on the radio, I like a lot of the guitar work in metal and the high tempo and intensity makes for good workout music. The problem is the vocals largely suck. I don't care for the ball-less WOAAHHHH!!! YEAAHHHH!!! screeching type stuff. Is there good metal out there that's totally voiceless? I'm thinking of something along this vein: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGPLMkZqepQ
