I honestly feel lucky to be alive after this accident and you will definately understand wht after you look at the pictures

Friday I was in a serious car accident. I was sitting at a stop light that is
on a freeway off-ramp and I looked bach just in time to see a car going 80 mph (this is reported on the police report) coming up behind me. I saw them just enough to see that they were slamming on their brakes and the car was going sideways.

They hit the back end of my car so hard that it literally flipped me over 2
1/2 times and I came to a stop in my roof. I unbuckled my seatbelt and
crawled out of my car on my own. I never got a good look at my car before they took me to the hospital but I did see that all of the windows were gone and my rear driver side wheel was completely bent flat. The guy that helped me crawl out of my car said it was much worse on the other side. The ambulance tech said that he was amazed that I survived the accident and I have no doubt that my seatbelt saved my life.

As it is, it appears that all I ended up with was a broken left hand
(crushed somehow), sore neck, injured ribs and a major headache.

Oh and I have not mentioned the best part. The guy that hit me jumped out of his car and tookoff. There are some witnesses that saw him and gave a description so hopefully they will find him. Turns out that the car was stolen.

Here are some pictures of the car after the accident

I echo Devil: HOLY CRAP!!

While modern cars do tend to get more damaged than older cars, an all steel car would probably have transferred enough force to you to kill you at that speed.

Glad you're able to post this. biggrin

Wow, man I am glad you are okay!  Be thankful you had no passengers with you.  They would have been dead with a capitol D!  Amazing you came out of that okay yourself actually....

About five years ago my wife and I were hit by a Sugarcane truck and I thought that one was bad based on what our car looked like (No injuries for either of us)  Our car was hit not once, but twice by the same guy, once when he clipped  us changing lanes and then a second time when he slammed into us on the drivers side after having spun us into his path.  We slid for about 200 yards sideways and I was just waiting for the flip that thankfully never happened (Turns out we were sorta attached to the front end of the truck).  After seeing your damage though.... wow, ummm you win.  Thank goodness your okay.  smile

Holy shit.

You know you're lucky to be alive when I have to look for the nametag in the trunk shots just to figure out what make/model it was.

P.S.  Glad you're alive and well.

That's exactly what I was about to post. I could not make out the make and model, and that's scary.

Congrats Croman, glad you're still with us!. thumbsup

Can't see the pictures, but I can imagine your car looks like an accordian.  Thank god you're relatively unscathed.  It could have gone really horribly for you.

Rest up, and get well.

Damn, man.  Glad you are okay and that there was no one else in the car.  It looks like a giant picked it up and crumpled it like an empty beer can.  I'd keep those mangled license plates for good luck. smile

Wow, so glad glad you're relatively OK.  I have a question for you.  Were you all tensed up (braced for impact) before being hit?  There is discussion about whether being tense vs. not as to how bad injuries can be.

Did you car have an airbag?

I never really saw the car after the accident, I was too busy lying there and then they took me away pretty quickly.

So what is funny is that the next day we went to the impound lot to go check out the car and to take these pictures.  When we got to the desk and the lady pulled up the car in the computer, it said  "minor scratches and dents on all sides".

To be honest, I am not sure if I was tensed up or not.  I looked in the mirror and saw the car coming maybe a fraction of a sec before the impact.

The air bags never wnet off, I had both driver and passenger air bags

Update:

Ok, the car was stolen.  It was reported stolen about 1 hour before the accident.   They will never catch the guy, especially since they are not looking.

We do have no-fault insurance so that will cover everything.

It does look like that I will have some sort of permanent injury in my neck. (according to my chiropactor) but hopefully it will not be too bad.  From what I can guess due to how I feel.. I may just get headaches alot from here on out and have some back pain when I move too quickly.  Alot better than what it could have been.  Hopefully my hand will not bother me too much after the cast is taken off.

The insurance company is giving me a very good payout on the car.  I paid 12,000 almost 4 years ago for it and they are giving me a payout of $8,100.   We have both of our cars on one loan and with this payoff, we may actually be able to payoff both loans.  That would be nice to not have any car payments anymore (although, we will need to go get a second car but that will be cheaper than having two payments).

I appreciate all the nice words from you guys..

That's good to hear...  I was a little worried about that.

I got hit by a drunk uninsured driver a few Christmas's ago when I was home visiting my family in Maryland.  They don't have no-fault insurance, but they do have an "uninsured motorists fund"...   it's capped at 100K, but it was enough to pay my medical bills with a decent amount left over.
