I know we have a few musicians and aspiring musicians, so I'm curious to what type of gear we use around these parts.

I own a couple of acoustic guitars, but I'm a Bassist...

Aria Pro II IGB. Plays like utter crap, but it's my first bass and I keep it for sentimental reasons. She sounds OK after installing some EMGs, but she stays in the case.

Ibenez Soundgear 700. My regular player. Many can't stand them, but I like the quick neck and light action.

Ibenez Soundgear 505. Five string version of the above. The electronics are better though, much more 'burp' from the Bartolini style pick-ups than the ol P-J setup on the 700. I've only had her for a couple months and I'm still adjusting to the extra string and how close together the strings are.

Boss ME-8B multi effects. I don't go to crazy with effects....I just use it for a bit of compression and a bit of fuzz.

Ampeg SVT-III head through an Ampeg 8x10" Cabinet. It's been through hell and back, but can still shake the ground you walk on.

I'd love to find good deals on a couple of Warwicks...but geez they are expensive!!

Anyways...what else could we find in the GT jam room?

Ohhhh, gear talk, my favorite!!!!

I have 3 guitars.. A Zakk Wylde Camo Epiphone Les Paul,  A Schecter Raider with Seymore Duncan active pickups (pure metal guitar), and a BC Rich Warlock with EMG 81/85's.   

I have a Line 6 Spider 3 75w Amp.   I used to have pedals and processors, but this amp made all of those useless.  I can model pretty much any sound, from blues to country to metal.   It has over 400 artist/song presets so its not hard to get a sounds im looking for.

Our other guitar player has a pretty cool pile of gear too... That's a '57 Reissue LP, an '83 50w JCM800, and a JTM45 that he built.  We sound badass.


I have two instruments built by my grandfather... I don't have very good pics of them online... but I've got a violin he built in... 83? I can't really play anymore... but as a youngster I was pretty good.  I also have a f-style mandolin that he built in '80.

I've also got a Fender Jazz bass, an Epi acoustic, a buttload of mics and crap, a POD 2.0 for home recording... various pedals I don't use... a keyboard... another ugly as shit 4x12...

I have a Schecter Stiletto Deluxe-4 bass. Fairly happy with it, it was a definite upgrade over my Squier cheapo that I had previously. For amplification I've got a Behringer BX1200.

I also have a 12-string acoustic guitar made by Samick, but I have no idea which of those models it is.

At some point in the future I'm wanting to invest in a drum kit, probably electric so I can play w/o disturbing the family and neighborhood.

A good buddy of mine's workshop would be Kratzs wonderland...he's a buyer/seller/collector of all things guitar, especially rare Les Pauls and Marshall heads. He's had some sweet ones through there.

Also, I use an 8x10" Ampeg cabinet not the 4x10". After my first road expedition with the 8x, I so wished I'd grabbed two 4xs instead....that beast is heavy and awkward as hell.

Yeah, we have an 8x10 ampeg as well.  They are heavy mofos to lug around, but they sound so damn good!

Yeah...I can't complain about the sound. I used to have guys who would ask why I wouldn't get four 10"s and a 15" instead...'cause it doesn't sound like muddy crap'. Bigger isn't always better.

No offense to anyone with big floppy speakers.

My No. 1: G&L SB-2. It's passive and it KILLS. OMGOMGOMG I love this bass.


My No. 2: Ernie Ball MusicMan Sterling. Great backup, was my No. 1 for many years. I've had this one for 10 plus years and it's a purdy bass.


My No. 3: Ibanez ATK300. Picked this up a year or so ago. It's big and heavy and is a good rock bass.

Not that the SVT is a bad head, it's just that as I've grown out of playing strictly metal/rock years ago and I've wanted something with more versatile sound. It's the reason I grabbed the ME-8B, which helps, but it still doesn't sound quite as warm as I'd like.

Is the TE a full head or just the power supply? Tube or solid state?

I think that's what I don't like about the SVT, the solid state power.

You gots to have yerself some tubes.  Our bass player uses a rack mount SVT solid state, and it's good... but the 1974 VB4 we used on the last recording was the shit.

THough I've been playing bass for 20+ years, I've just recently figured out the tonal differences between a passive and active bass. Sadly, I'm still trying to figure out the difference in sound between a SS and tube amp. As I have no tube amp at my disposal, I can't really hear one.

Bought this thing 14 years ago new, not one single problem, recorded with it, tons of practicing, took it on tour and it still lives! A couple scuffs in the exterior, but that's it! Highly recommended.


Ibanez gTo, total bottom of the line 7 string, I just bought it as a back-up (i.e. the cheapest 7 string I could find, I think it was $320 cdn at the time...6-7 years ago). I now actually prefer it. Relatively fast neck, simplistic and to the point. Dropped an EMG 707 active in there and it made all the difference sound-wise.

Other stuff I own:
BC Rich Warlock 7 string
Degas nylon string....signed by the Honky Tonk Man! (yes, the wrestler)
half a drum set (long story...and no I don't play drums)

Stuff I own but will sell soon:
Digitech Artist 2120 (alot of people love this unit, but personally I think the Line 6 beats the crap out of it sound wise)
Marshall 9200 power amp (nice and loud, but unecessarily heavy (in weight) and adds to set up time, the Line 6 elminates both these devices, saves space and can be set up in 30 seconds)

Stuff I want:
I have interest in the newer Line 6 heads, I saw a band in the summer where one guitarist was using mine...and the other was using a newer version and well....you can guess which one sounded better...

I guess part of it is that you can switching tunings on the fly, more than actually just tuning it.

That is awesome.  Would have been incredibly helpful when I was learning to play guitar... always drove me nuts when I was trying to learn a song by some group that detuned their guitars a step or two.  Floyd Rose + Eb/D tuning == pain.

The set is $995 at Guitar Center, where I picked it up. They're doing a deal for 1 year interest free financing if you sign up for their store credit card, which I did. You'll also need a throne and a bass pedal.

Your mileage may very, but I'm still not 100% sure if I'm keeping it or not. I haven't been totally thrilled with the sound quality, especially on the cymbals. I know I could run it through a sampler on my PC using the midi ports, but that's a bit more work than I'm wanting to do. Definitely test drive the crap out of one at the store if you do pick one up. The "brain" on this unit is also pretty limited, some of the more expensive kits have really impressive functionality (mixing the different triggers separately, built-in loops, etc).
