Time waster alert:

Just throwing a random topic out here, but what would you say is the most believable "conspiracy theory" out there, and do you believe in it?

I am just finishing the last couple missions of Assassin's Creed 2, and after playing through some of the glyph puzzles, for the first time I was able to see the romance (for lack of a better word) of conspiracy theories.  I was never interested in them at all.  I never had an opinion about 9/11 theories, for example, and I never looked at Jesse Ventura beyond someone feeding into fantasies for a show.

So I googled conspiracy theories and saw this list.  Man, some of these are pretty crazy!  So what's your take?  Convince me that aliens live among us, or that the government is using my phone's GPS to track my every movement!  I'm not trolling or F-ing around, I am genuinely curious about conspiracy theories after AC2.  I've played (and loved) the Deus Ex games, but my eyes glazed over anytime something about shadow organizations came up.  So I'm asking for serious responses here.  If you're embarrassed, just a friend of yours thinks...

What an odd use of the word "list." I think your linky is bad.

Most plausible conspiracy theory, I think, is one of the JFK assassination explanations. I don't have a favorite horse in the race -- Castro, the KGB, the mob, the CIA -- but one can build a believable case for any of the above, and the official government explanation is weak.

obviously Roger Waters and David Gilmour are to blame.

For those knocking the link in the OP, did any of you actually watch that video? if not how do you know the old boys from Pink Floyd aren't belting out a list of conspircacies in their song? And even if that doesn't prove true, have either of you bothered to play that video back in reverse. I'm not saying whether it does or doesn't reveal a list of conspiracies  - I'm just saying.... ninja

I like the approach David Aaronovich took to conspiracies in his book Voodoo History. I.e most conspiracy theories are based on unsubstantiated facts, but a number of them emerge amongst political or social climates in which other conspiracies may truly be occuring. Viewing conspiracies from that perspective its not difficulty to see how a number of conspiracies are more speculation than anything and really the byproducts of the climate they arose in. That's even true of some conspiracies that go as far back as Ancient times.

That's not to say there isn't some true conspiracies, there are, but they're more often the exception and usually different or counter to the popularized version. I could give some concrete examples, but I fear I'd go on and on and on....

Start listening to Coast to Coast AM. You'll get plenty of people who'll want to convince you aliens are among us...oh and those Chupacabra things too.

The Danish Government has on a number of occasions in the past lied to the public. This is a pretty small and benign government where things pretty much ALWAYS gets out so of course there are conspiracies around the world, set in motion by often governments and larger corporations.

They are probably not as crazy as those mentioned above, but its pretty certain they are there.

Ah, but they got caught. Believing that a government can actually get away with a Big Lie is more of a stretch.

I guess my favorite is the De Beers conspiracy.  It's basically that not only are the diamond cartels withholding vast supplies of mined diamonds to keep prices artificially high, but are also suppressing through threats, court and legislative action the production and marketing of synthetic jewelry grade diamonds.  Sure it could just be a difficult technology to master, but that's not as much fun as a global monopoly conspiracy.

While not in name, the Illuminati conspiracy theory is quite alive and well and operating on a daily basis.  Unless you dont believe theres a "One World" organization of powerful people basically controlling all that happens and in that case, well thats exactly what they want you to believe.  This link will provide you what you need to know:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iAt1eQagPA

I tend to find "historical" conspiracy theories more interesting then modern/current ones if for no other reason then that I think it would be hard to cover up some of the stuff now.  Like aliens.  There are so many cell phone cameras out there now, for example, that we should be inundated with examples.

The latest oil price theories where Obama is doing little to stop the never ending gas price increases is because he wants to push us out of our big gas guzzlers and into smaller fuel efficient cars.

I've heard that one a few times now.
