LOTS of pissed people around town today!

If the city/state finally shows some balls, someone should hang and pay for this.

Sounds like they're trying to grow a pair.

It's a hoax _ and it's not funny.

Isn't the very nature of a "hoax" to make folks think something that isn't true? Is the governor stating that the ad company intended for these viral ads to be mininterpreted as terrorist devices? Does he actually think that's possible?

Gov. Urkel and Mayor Mumbles will do nothing.

The things looked a little suspect. Batteries and wires attached to the signs.

Don't companies have to declare these things before attaching them to public buildings and structures? Didn't the marketing company think twice about this? Lastly, if you've never seen the show, how the hell would you know what they were trying to market to begin with?

Over the last three weeks, these have been all over a bunch of cities.  Without incident, it seems.  Looks like a whole lot of people over there started seeing terrorists under their bed, but they just turned out to be Mooninites!

Actually, there was a big Mooninite ad a few blocks north of my house.  I wanted to take a picture of it... but it's fricken cold, so I haven't gone over there recently.  Not the lite-brite looking thing like in the picture, it's big, like half-billboard sized, and it's more like a neon outline.  I think it was lit up at night.

From what I've read (looking for a news source to back that up), other cities were notified, Boston wasn't...  But if they hadn't been notified, I'm worried for those cities (Hey, a strange box is hanging off that bridge there.  Oh, it's probably just a viral marketing campaign)

'Together we can' over-react to a marketing strategy.  I don't like the show, and even I knew what these things were once I saw it.  A lot of ticked off people.  Hoping that somehow Ted Turner and Jane Fonda end up doing jail time for this, but that's probably hoping too much?  Maybe Turner can at least reimburse the city for the cost of the police, firemen, and FBI agents who spent the day looking at this stuff.

I feel bad for the 2 people arrested. Imagine getting a shitty job and then going to jail for 5 years for doing what you were told to do.
Obviously, you could bring up Nuremburg, but this is pretty different IMHO.

Had they shown the public what these were in the first place the city would have understood them to not be dangerous devices. The police would, likely, have received several thousand calls pointing them to the blogs where the perpetrators showed the entire development of the operation.

One photo of one of these Lite Brite ads would have made them into laughing stock, but the media did nothing to make this any better for any one.

Even now, CNN is totally missing the point.

It's seems like some of yall think the city of Boston actually has a leg to stand on here, which I just don't understand. They overreacted to some cartoon characters, ended up looking like complete idiots, and are trying to save face by arresting a couple folks and sabre-rattling about suing Turner.

Honestly, it just makes the entire city government look ridiculous.

Makes them look like scared little girls, IMO.

The amazing thing I noticed today is that only one, single news outlet questioned whether this was an over-reaction... and it was MTV.

How fricken sad is that?

I agree - the state has almost no chance at anything.

Thats why I pointed out the fact that our fearless (stupid) leaders were so riled up as if they were going to do something.

Somebody should take some heat for a city shutting down for a day.

Wow, I'm shocked: saw this headline on MSN:

Many young Bostonians think city overreacted
‘We’re the laughingstock,’ resident says after cartoon signs prompt scare

I guess there is hope for the world after all.

[edit] LOL, I love this:
Quote
The devices didn’t prompt calls of concern in any of the nine other cities where Turner said the devices were placed. Police in the other cities fanned out to find and remove them after Boston’s scare.

Some enterprising people got to the devices before police: At least seven were for sale Thursday afternoon on the Internet auction site eBay, ranging in price from $500 to $2,100.

I would LOVE one of those: they are so cool looking.

Yes, I agree.

The mayor and whomever else was involved in the decision the shut the city down over a light-bright should take some heat.

Turner, the advertising company, Adult Swim, and the two guys who were arrested should take absolutely no heat.

I just don't get this.  We are told time and time again that "we are at WAR!" The president is reelected on that platform, we invade other countries on that platform, we jail US citizens without trial or access to lawyers under that platform but if the city of Boston acts like we are at war they are laughing stocks?

Tell me oh wise ones, when at "elevated" threat level what should a city government do when they get reports of several "devices" placed around the city with wires and batteries attached?  Seriously, what would you have them do? Ignore it?

'bout time someone blamed Bush.

All along I thought it would be 'break!

Maybe with this sort of high alert it shouldn't have taken days or weeks, and maybe after the 2nd one (that wasn't a bomb) there should have been better communication.

they probably already did, hence the whole "scare" in the first place.  (i know, i know, cynical enough?)

i mean christ the 24 hour news knew what the things looked like and they ran the story for hours as if boston was filled with bombs and not lightbrights - oh wait thats right, turner owns one of the 24 hour news agencies - so i guess they didnt have to write that check - and we all know how the dedicated news run their own unique stories - its not like i can flick through the stations and see the exact same story on all of them  Roll Eyes

Turner Broadcasting and the Ad Agency involved are ponying up $2mill. So they've paid.

I just find it true that Boston is the laughing stock because these went up in 9 other cities and no one batted an eye. I still contend that had the news agency obtained a photo of one and broadcast that it would have immediately diffused the issue. Thanks for the new wallpaper!

Good on Turner Broadcasting for this.  Of course now I'm wondering if the mayor and governor knew what these were all along, but just were looking for a payday -- one million of that is 'goodwill funds' to be split amongst a few state agencies...

Now that Boston's stupid mistake has successfully extorted money from Turner, does this mean they are dropping the charges against those two guys?

The first thing I thought of, when I heard about the settlement, is worrisome precedent. However, it was nothing legal so cities cannot effectively use it for coffer-lining.

The talk I've heard on the radio here...  Some folks had been thinking that this would all go away by the end of this week for them.  However, apparently there is now surveillance video of these guys filming the police reaction to the first light-bright.  The state is arguing that this proves 'intent'.

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=181301

My guess is that they end up with some community service (and I hope that they make that one guy shave his head, or at least wash it, as part of his punishment too)...  Another 'shame' on Turner for hanging these bozos out to dry, after lining the pockets of our local crimina...  er politicians.
