pete i LOVED the interview last year at the start of the season, when all the phillies pitchers were up on the stage and it was like OMG hamels, halladay, lee, oswalt!!! and that guy.
at one point, i shit you not, a reporter is commenting on the "fact" that all the aces on the staff were hall of famers and not one had a world series ring, and how did they feel about a chance to get one. totally ignoring "that guy" - blanton, sort of peeved is like "uh, i have one" - but it sort of sounded like he was saying "gees im sitting right here are you all really going to pretend like i dont even exist this WHOLE show"
it was pretty funny
I remember that same interview. It was both funny and unfortunate for Blanton. My friends and I have been calling him "Sloppy Joe" for a while now and always dread when he's on the mound. Yet last night Halladay gave up 5 earned runs (don't even get my started on our bull shit pen) and today Blanton went the distance and pitched a shutout. Craziness I tell you.

Here's a fun Box Score. Orioles vs Red Sox goes 17 innings. Chris Davis becomes the first position player since 1968 to get a win, striking out Adrian Gonzalez and inducing a double play to end the game.

Actually, Wilson Valdez was the first position player since 2000 to get a win, making Davis the 2nd position player since 2000 to do so.

That's correct, but he is the first to go 0-8 at the plate and get the win since 1905

The only reason I even knew about the Wilson Valdez game is because I was watching it live and just couldn't stop watching. These kinds of games are just ridiculous to see. Yeah you're right, I think it was American League, not Major League.

I'm barely participating in this thread because my Brewers are making me viscerally angry. Put up 14 runs one game, then put up 2 runs for 8 straight games. (slow clap) Braaaaaa-vo.

Blanco's catch in the 7th was probably one of the best catches I've ever seen. He ran a ridiculously long way to the center field alley to make that desperation dive. Just incredible.

Agreed, what a catch. My stomach was in knots on the last out. It looked like Arias was going to botch the throw!

Well, despite our horribly disappointing season, we can at least stop worrying about Cole Hamels who signed a 6-year extension for $144 million. For now I have to appreciate the little victories. Or abstract victories, as we can't seem to earn real ones.

Mainly it gives us more payroll flexibility next season, plus his inconsistencies and occasional struggles haven't met expectations. He does well in spurts, but overall it looks like finances are taking priority over emotional leadership. I like Pence, but it appears the Phillies brass are cutting our losses for 2012 and looking ahead to try to turn things around in 2013. I guess we can't win every season. It was a heck of a run while it lasted.

Went to the Rockies-Cardinals on Wednesday. I know the Rockies are bad, but that shouldn't mean that the masses of Cardinals fans treat the ballpark like their own.

Sucks to be a DC area native today that grew up with the O's and now with the Nats too This. That one was a gut-punch. No hockey to fall back on, either (though that collapse rivaled or exceeded Capitals-level playoff choking anyway). I mean, just devastating. It's every bit of awful DC sports fan experience rolled up into a little ball of awful.

Well, if it makes you Nats fans feel any better, the Cards winning solved my potential dilemma of having to choose between going to the Niners/Bears (and the all day tailgate) or the potential Giants/Nats game on Thursday.
Thankfully now that game is a game @STL, so I can go to the tailgate/football game with no regrets.
How that would make you feel any better, I have no idea. But hey, yay me.

Today is an awesome day. The Tigers are in the World Series!!!!!! What an incredible performance by the Tigers starting rotation. Going back to the start of the playoffs, for the time since they started recording earned runs 100 years ago, a starting pitching rotation went 7 games in a row without giving up an earned run in the first 5 inning of a game. The starting pitchers combined ERA is 1.02 with 66 strike outs over 62 innings pitched and opposing batters had a combined .162 batting average against them. They gave up an average of 3.8 hits per game. If the Tigers can continue this unheard of dominance thru the World Series, they will be unbeatable. Go Tigers!

Detroit needs someone to win something again as the Wings are lacking (when playing) as of late and the Lions are the Lions.
