they are all being locked up for nearly 18 months for a mock up mission to mars to see how they can cope psychologically

As in a real Mars mission, the crew will have to survive on limited food rations and the only way they will be able to communicate with the outside world will be by email, with a delay of up to 40 minutes.

The hatch will only re-open at the end of the experiment or if one of the participants is forced to pull out.

The crew is single sex deliberately, to allow the volunteers to focus on their professional duties instead of having the distraction of female crew members.

The space agencies want to send a mission there within the next three decades.

Imagine spending 1½ year of your life, incarcerated and NO weekendouting or anything...its insane! While I applaud the science and the possible mission, I'd NOT do this myself - and when you get out, whats your reward? Well, a 1½ year trip to mars :-D

I wonder what the likelihood of any of these guys actually getting to go on the Mars trip would be. It will probably be 10-15 years at best before they launch the real mission at which time these guys will be too old. Sounds like a crap deal to me.

meh wont happen,10-15 years would be lucky,they said they are aiming for within the next 3 decades,but this kinda shit is valuable for Researchers and Psychiatrists ...kinda like being in the Big Brother house,only longer,and more confined,and i am guessing they aren't assholes(as much)

i would of thought by the time they do get mission to mars going,they would be using Status for 18 months or some other made up sci-fi shit

well they are now 'half way through the test'..and that means they have now done the simulated steps on Mars

Members of a simulated space flight to Mars have taken their first 'steps' on the Red Planet.


Never has a step into a sandpit been so momentous - not least for those involved.

The six-man mission began in June last year at a research centre in Moscow.

The experiment, a joint venture between a Russian science institute and the European Space Agency, ESA, is the longest ever space simulation experiment.


The 'Martian walk' marked only the half way point of the test.

Three of The Mars 500 volunteers left their claustrophobic wood-panelled capsule for the first time in eight months, transferring to a landing module for the 'touch-down' on Mars.

Researchers will look at how well they cope in their spacesuits, each of which weighs 32 kilos, after the long period of reduced physical activity and isolation.

Three of the men are Russians, two are Europeans and one is Chinese.

Few people are allowed near the research centre for fear of contaminating the conditions of the experiment.


Coordinators have gone to great lengths to ensure it is as realistic as possible.

Since last summer the men have been subjected to some bizarre experiments aimed at finding out more about the physical and psychological effects of long distance space travel.

The head of the project, ESA astronaut Dr Christer Fuglesang, is a veteran of two shuttle missions to the International Space Station.

He says the Mars mission has been a challenge: "Boredom and monotony - from our point of view what's important is to try to not give them too much or too little to do and then come up with some interesting things to beat the monotony."

Karaoke has been a key outlet for the men.

Video diaries have showed them venting their boredom through an often unmelodic version of Blur's 'Song 2'.

Though meticulously planned, their diet has looked pretty uninspiring.

It will remain so until their mission ends in November.

The completion of this stage brings the possibility of a manned mission to Mars that bit closer though that is not likely any earlier than 2030.

Six men who spent a 520-day simulated mission to Mars inside a network of windowless modules at a Russian space research centre have emerged safe and well.

The all-male crew of three Russians, a Frenchman, an Italian-Colombian and a Chinese stayed at the facility in Moscow since June 2010.

The experiment was designed to simulate confinement, stress and fatigue of interplanetary travel - minus the weightlessness.

The crew communicated with the organisers and their families via the internet, which was delayed and occasionally disrupted to imitate the effects of distant space travel.

They ate canned food similar to that offered on the International Space Station.

Organisers said each crew member will be paid about £62,000.

Yeah, agreed.  That extra mental "no escape" factor could really play a huge part in problems and breakdowns on a long-term mission like that.

The next "mission" won't be under water, but rather in Detroit, so just as scary.  Plus, they will be testing the gender issue by having five women and one guy.
