I'm getting started on figuring out how I want my MINI to look.     So far I'm going with Chili Red similar to this one with checkered roof and maybe the mirrors too:

And I'm getting this interior:

I like it.  The checkered roof and mirrors are just obnoxious enough.  I didn't think I'd like the cars when I heard they were going to be reintroduced years ago, but they really do look good.

Not a fan of the checkered mirrors at all, and if it were me I'd probably toss the roof, too.

Whatever floats your boat.  I like it enough, although not for my car.  I tend toward more understated though.

My only complaint about the Mini is the speedometer in the center.  The rest of the interior kicks ass though.

Yeah and the CD player is jammed in under there too I think.  Wtf?  Tongue  I'm still half toying with the idea of a Clubman if certain circumstances arise though.

As someone who has owned boring cars his whole life and thus become an expert on boring, I can say that your MINI will not be boring.  Get it exactly the way you want.  And yes, the red trimmed interior looks cool.

It might be time for me to think about a new car myself if every thread you guys start on new cars leaves me with a "Oh, I want THAT!" response.

I envy you. The wife and myself both love the minis. That build looks sweet. I love the interior on those things.

The last time I hopped on the Mini website and built one with everything on it that I would want it crossed $35k.

Insanity.

I love the cars and would love to own one, but damn are the options on it expensive.

Reminds me of a British taxi.  I'd dump the checkered outside look.  The rest is quite nice.  You could still run those black stripes up top.

It just follows the original Mini's design and not really a cost-saving factor like the Yaris/Saturn.
You can get the speedo moved (at least with the 2002-2007 model) to the regular spot with what is known as the Chrono pack. The space is replaced with a few guages. Ugly as sin though.

Heat is irrelevant when you drive Darth Vader's MINI.

(Plus I hail from Canada, which means I only suffer through 2 months of "heat", AND I park at an underground garage.

As the proud owner of a red/silver Mini... I say the checkers are ugly as sin. I do kind of like the red on the interior, mine is almost all black.

As for the comment about the speedometer in the center, you get used to it. And the CD player... with the iPod hookup you never use a CD.

Best of all, fun as hell to drive!

Love the black one but black interiors are not for me.  Like msduncan said - way too hot.  Now a black exterior with a nice tasteful tan or brown interior = love.

I goofed around on the MINI site and built a black Clubman.  Then teh gellar reminded me that black is the suck for care.  Swirls for the lose.  I mean if you really take your time caring for it, it's okay, but I don't have time to baby my car's finish.

Indeed.  I aborted my Mini Cooper 2nd car plan a long time ago due to the fact that by the time I got it to where I wanted, it was no longer in the reasonable price range.

The GF has a Cooper S in red, with basically the same interior you're looking at.  She wants the stripes and checkers too smile  That said, right now she has the black roof and blacked out windows, and it's pretty sharp.

FWIW, I dig the checkers and stripes, but no one has ever called my cars "understated"  smile

No. Black cars still heat up like no other. The black car I had was horrid in the summer, and the leather interior getting that hot certainly didn't help.

I honestly think that car would morph into a pile of black molten goo here in Houston. All that would be left is a black puddle with the chrome mirror caps and the chrome gas tank cover on top. Then the city government would see it and think it was art and charge admission.

We originally considered cars that were British Racing Green or the various blues, but in the end we decided that a look-at-me car deserves a look-at-me color and we ended up with the Mellow Yellow.  The Chili Red is very much the most popular color on the roads; if we didn't have as many other MINIs out there with us, I'd definitely have considered going with one of those (looks sharp with either white stripes or black -- or no stripes if you're still considering the justacooper rather than an S).  As far as interiors go, everything I've heard says to go with the Sport seats (for extra lateral support), and to avoid the leather (and for $1500 extra, avoiding the leather seemed like a great idea to me!).  Unfortunately the only light-colored interior is the Tuscan Beige leather.  We went with the stock grey interior sport seats with leatherette and are plenty happy.  But the red-trimmed interior definitely looks sharp!

As far as exterior accoutrements, I definitely say to go with what looks good to you.  The big checkers can look garish, but the MINI itself is kinda garish, and it's rather impossible to get something that just looks plain ol' WTF.  I like the Mellow Yellow with the black stripes on the hood, but there are LOTS of other striping options (check out outmotoring.com amongst others -- zillions of sites with custom MINI mods out there).  If it is important to you to make your car extra distinctive, you can really go nuts.  I'd love to black-out the chrome trim portions of my ride (around the headlights, along the beltline, around the taillights, etc) which I think would look sharp with the mudflaps and the extra driving lights.

No comment on the cost adders for all the extra options.  I failed my saving throw vs. frugality when putting our car together.  nod

I've got opinions on just about all the functional options as well.  For the '07, the NAV system was a $2000 adder (!!!) to the bottom line, but if you don't care for the pie-plate center speedo, the NAV *really* makes that thing look sharp.  And if you're more interested in its functionality, I can write a mini-dissertation on the thing (mostly positive, but a few GUI-related WTFs involved as well).

Which model did you test drive?
