on NBC at 8pm EST.  It should be interesting to see how a show like this does on NBC, I hear it will be brought back for a second series on BBC though.

Thanks for the heads up as I hadn't known about the show. Seems worth watching given the lack of anything else on sundays this time of year.

I think what MO is saying is that Merlin is absolutely terrible.  As Arclight pointed out, it's for kids.  Cliched, awful script, not very good acting and predictable plots with more holes than a teabag.  It's dire.

If you liked the BBC's recent Robin Hood series you'll probably like it, I suppose.  Myself, I'll stick to grown-ups' TV. icon_razz

Haha!  Indeed.  There are many things I love about the BBC and many things I hate.  Their dramatic output is one of the things I hate, pandering as it does to the lowest common denominator wherever possible.

i don't hate them totally,i watch the F1 and the odd Match of the Day...but the only good series they have done in the last year or two that was any good IMO was 'Being Human' and that was on BBC3,i really enjoyed that(dark comedy drama thing..about a Vampire,Werewolf and a Ghost living together...lots of sex and blood/gore...and the girl who plays the Ghost is fit icon_twisted)

i think my hate stems from the fact that we pay the BBC-3.6 Billion a year(yes Billion),through the TV license, and that's apparently 75% of their income(the rest comes from overseas and DVDsales)..and i really don't see what they spend it on(and the fact that we go to jail if we don't pay it)...no really..what do they spend it on???

also, why do we have to pay for BBC DVDs here in Britain?..we have already paid for the shows,we should just be paying for the packaging ..it doesnt help that BBC DVDs are the most expensive as well

and then take all that and then you get people around the world saying how great the BBC is

i think the Beeb was great for comedy,in the last few decades they HAVE done some of the best Comedy shows
Fawlty Towers,Extras,The Office,Red Dwarf,Only Fools and Horses,Blackadder...but the last few years, nothing(suppose you could count The Fast Show and Little Britain..but i didnt like them,LOL)

Drama, well i know Dr Who is popular...i liked it(well i watched it now and again)when i was a kid,but now it screams 'crap'(LOL,have you seen the new Doctor..hahaha)...Robin Hood,Merlin,Casualty,The Wire,Hotel Babylon...i can't really think of anything else...but just all of it,is just something i don't really care about

i will say this though,i always wanted to give Life on Mars a try,but never got round to it....and its sequel, whatever thats called

EDIT:Ashes to Ashes

EDIT 2:BBC news 24,less said the better

/rant over

/starting to calm down

The Wire is HBO, not BBC, and is spectacularly good TV. slywink

But yeah, I agree with a lot of what you said there, MO.  Particularly with regard to the license fee.  It's shocking that we cannot really opt out of paying it in the digital age; why can't we have digiboxes that don't show BBC if we don't pay the fee?

I guess I am a childish lowest common denominator because I enjoyed it.  I don't give a rats ass whether a show gives me some sort of existential enlightment... all I care about is if I am entertained, and Merlin entertained me.

Ok, now while not every episode of the current Doctor Who series is perfect, there have been some episodes in the last few seasons that I would count among the best episodes of television I have ever seen ('The Girl in the Fireplace', for one), and David Tennant is awesome.

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but since I enjoy Robin Hood and Doctor Who it sounds like I'll enjoy this one.  I think the main reason they're showing it is to try and cash in on the Harry Potter effect over the summer.  the annoying part is now that Sunday nights is very busy for TV, with them apparently airing Merlin in 2 hour blocks from 8-10, True Blood on at 9 and Ice Road Truckers on at 9 also, plus a couple of mini series events over the next few weeks, also starting at 9..

The new Doctor Who is great.  To think otherwise just means that you are not worthy.  Please remove yourself until such a time as you realize how very wrong you are.  At that point a committee will be formed to determine if you are fit to post here.  Making contributions will help in the process.

(p.s. doctor who is drama in your book?  seriously?  wow... icon_lol)

And for quite a few shows in the past (Red Dwarf!) that they hosted.

Agreed on Top Gear,i do like that show(and yes i forgot that one)...although,thats prolly where all our money goes, some cars they show cost 100k just to showcase them..and they are always going everywhere in the world...and The Stig has just revealed himself (again),so time for a new Stig i guess(again)(!)<<thats a joke BTW,as i doubt it has been Michael Schumacher all this time

@Hepcat-Doctor Who is listed as Drama on BBC...no,i wouldn't list it as that either

@th' FOOL not sure what to make of your 'best episodes of TV' comment with Doctor Who ..i am speechless

@seemingly everyone...and when i said have you seen the new Doctor HAHAHA...i meant the NEW Doctor...David Tennant quit(and i preferred Christopher Eccleston anyway..local lad does good Tongue)

this is the new Doctor

so i am gonna re-quote my post

Quote from: metallicorphan on June 22, 2009, 11:48:26 AM

i have to say there is a genre if you like, that i missed, and thats Documentaries...i will definetly say the BBC has some of the best Documentaries, especially David Attenborough(Brother of Richard) Nature/wildlife ones...Blue Planet etc

i also have to add that i love the Michael Palin round the world series(around the world in 80 days,Pole to Pole,Full Circle,Sahara etc etc)...as i love Michael Palin.

the wildlife ones i don't actually watch on TV,i have a few DVDs,and the Michael Palin ones were last seen in 2007 ..not sure if he is doing anymore

Since Moffat chose the new doctor, I'm going to reserve judgment until I see him in action.  Moffat has created some of the best Who stories, plus he was behind the Jekyll mini-series, so I tend to trust him in these matters.

Ok, let me be more specific.

This episode: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Girl_in_the_Fireplace

I thought was one of the finest pieces of episodic television I have seen in a good long time.  It was damn good.  There were a handful of others after that that impressed the shit out of me too, but that particular episode launched the latest series into the stratosphere for me.

And yeah, I'll reserve judgement on the new doctor until I see him in action. I was very surly when they replaced Eccleston but changed my tune after a couple of episodes with Tennant.

I watched the first 15 minutes of episode 1 on Hulu this morning. I was borderline turning it off the whole time until the scene where Merlin takes a swing at Arthur. Does it make sense that a wimpy warlock is going to throw a girlie punch at a trained soldier? Even if he had landed the punch it wouldn't have hurt Arthur. I tried.

After seeing the first two on Hulu I have to agree - it feels like a 'light summer show'.

And man, I know why everybody loves Hulu - 3 minutes of commercials an hour instead of 20? Sign me up.
