Most Common Password is 'Password'Other commonly used passwords include ‘jesus’, ‘monkey’ and ‘ninja’ There are some constants in life. The sun sets in the west, the tide comes in and goes out, and ‘password’ is the most commonly used password.
SplashData has released a list of the most frequently used passwords online. The security software company looked at millions of stolen passwords that have been released by hackers over the course of 2012.
Unsurprisingly, ‘password’ was the most popular, followed by ‘123456’ and the equally imaginative ‘12345678’. Other entries in the top 25 are equally unsurprising ‘abc123’ lands at number four, and reliable old ‘qwerty’ is number five.
Some common passwords did take us by surprise however - ‘jesus’, ‘mustang’ and ‘michael’ all appear to be fairly common.
Number 12 on the list, ‘trustno1’ is apparently almost as common as it is cynical - although considering this list was compiled from hacked passwords, not entirely unjustified.
And while we all know ninjas are famed for their secrecy, they don’t make for very good passwords - ‘ninja’ slinked its way into the list as the 23rd most used password.
Interestingly, the 25th password on the list is ‘password1’. While adding numbers and symbols to passwords make them more secure, the effect is rather undermined when the word used is that obvious.
SplashData’s full list of popular passwords is as follows. If one of your passwords is on this list then stop reading this and change it right now. And remember the golden rule - never, ever use ‘password’ as a password. You’re not fooling anyone but yourself.
1-password 2-123456 3-12345678 4-abc123 5-qwerty 6-monkey 7-letmein 8-dragon 9-111111 10-baseball 11-iloveyou 12-trustno1 13-1234567 14-sunshine 15-master 16-123123 17-welcome 18-shadow 19-ashley 20-football 21-jesus 22-michael 23-ninja 24-mustang 25-password1 I think 'trustno1' which is at number 12 is the password on Mulders Home Computer and Skully guesses it right to crack into his PC when he has vanished in one episode of The X-Files some fun ones listed though QWERTY,or letmein..the 123456 reminds me of this

After watching Hackers all those years ago, I was under the impression that most folks used "God" as a password.

Ah, if only most password systems didn't require a minimum of 4 characters...

Shows what YOU know. Hackers PROVED it could be three characters. You gonna argue with the professionals behind Hackers?

Ummm...Not sure if you're getting the joke here. This is what I'm talking about. It's kind of a running joke amongst IT people how badly written it was.

Ah, wasn't sure if Hackers was as much a national treasure in Denmark as it is here in the U.S. Glad to hear it's world renowned!

I wouldn't know. What those crazy Danes do is beyond mortal comprehension. Never saw the movie, but the reference was obvious anyway.
