Quote
The technique, called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), triggers activity in the brain's nerve cells and is already being tested as a way to treat depression. Two small clinical trials have now shown that delivering TMS to the brain in the early stages of a migraine seems to halt it in its tracks.

Migraines are crippling headaches that affect around 10% of people in the United States. They are sometime preceded by an 'aura', in which a person sees flashing or shimmering light, blind spots or feels tingling.

70% success rate?  That is amazing!  Let's hope this gets some momentum so that it can perhaps one day be the cure for migraine sufferers.

So next time I get hit with one I should yank a couple of magnets off the fridge and slap 'em on my forehead? Interesting...

Since the brain functions off of electrochemical impulses, this is actually not surprising at all, and will probably lead to some very effective migraine treatments.

As much as this seems like hokey, our brains and nervous systems work of electrical impulses, which magnets do affect.

That show rocks.  Except when they go after something I like, then it sucks.

Just so you guys know, an MRI is basically a really powerful magnetic field generated to image the inside of your body.

Where and when does the show Bullshit air?  I remember seeing one episode of it covering recycled paper, but forgot where.

I love the show (it's entertaining AND smart!), but you can tell how obviously slanted they are since they pick their subjects and interviewees to make their side of the story much more credible than the opposing viewpoint.  So I wouldn't rely upon Penn & Teller to tell me what I'm supposed to believe on a highly contested viewpoint.  biggrin
