Microsoft announced today that Longhorn will be named Windows Vista when it appears next year.  They already have a product page up for it and a video of the announcement.

Looks like beta will begin for developers and IT professionals on August 3rd.

I put this in off-topic simply because more people can read it.  Now, what the heck kind of a name is Windows Vista?

Sounds like a minivan!  However, according to Microsoft:

It enables a new level of confidence in your PC and in your ability to get the most out of it.

How can you NOT love that!!!

Kinda like XP was for X-Perienced? Between XP, Vista, and XBox 360, someone needs to fire the entire Microsoft marketing department and start fresh.

*shrug*

I like it.  It's better than XP or giving a year or version number (or naming it after cats).  It fits with the "Windows" metaphor:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=vista

- A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees.

- An avenue or other passage affording such a view.

- An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view:  “the deep and sweeping vistas these pioneering critics opened up”

-  the visual percept of a region; "the most desirable feature of the park are the beautiful views"

What exactly does "Vista" bring to the table?

From the few articles I've read, it seems the main differences are in the GUI.  They take advantage of 3D cards to introduce animation and transparent windows.

Last I heard they yanked WinFS from the O/S and plan to introduce it as a "Free Addition" after release.

Without WinFS, what is the motivation to upgrade?

I dig it. Sounds like MS is trying to simplify the Windows interface, clearing up the OS vista ... through Vista.

I think it sounds kind of silly, but I am curious to see how it works out!

Of course, a window is the barrier keeping you from the beautiful vista.

To carry this to absurdity, a window can either open or closed.  Closed it is a barrier and open it allows access.  So Windows should obviously become open-source right?

I liked the name XP, it sounds techy and looks cool in caps.

Vista...not cool that's for sure.  It sounds too 'stylish' for my blood.  It beats Longhorn though.

Everytime somebody tries to 'clear up' the OS, it gets harder to use.

When a window is "Broken" one doesn't simply turn off the power to ones house, turn the breaker back, and expect the window to be restored or at the very least to be functional again.

Because, despite a solid bunch of grousing from the tech-saavy community, their market research showed this to be an effective name with whatever new market segment they're trying to tap.

The tech-saavy community, particularly the business and gaming communities, will be buying it regardless of the name of the box.

Not exactly.  The wall that the window is in is the true barrier to the vista.  You wouldn't even be able to see, much less enjoy, the beautiful vista were it not for the window.  Which may, or may not, be able to be opened and/or large enough to climb through.
