I guess the iPod Touch 3G rumor was ... damnable lies.   They're dropping the 8GB model price down $30 to $199 and adding a white model and aside from the iOS5/Cloud stuff, that's it on that. They're talking the iPhone 4S now.

Siri's impressive although I think I've tried the app version and had spotty success w/ the recognition.

The basics (and yes, Sprint is getting an iPhone but it seems like the "iPhone 5 exclusivity" rumor was a crock):

It'll hit US, Canada, Australia, the UK, France, Germany, and Japan. In the US it'll be Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint!

2:35PM Pre-orders for the 4S start this friday, the 7th. Available on October 14th.

Well I have a 3GS and was hoping for the iPhone 5 but it looks like we are just getting an iPhone 4 with a better camera and battery life. Not too sure about the voice stuff.  I use Dragon and it's still spotty sometimes.

Extremely doubtful. iPhone hotness will likely be announced in the fall from here on, taking the place of the iPod yearly announcement.

As perhaps the only non-smartphone user at the GT forums, I have a unique viewpoint. Lets say I'm thinking about it, and could use some advice from you veterans on picking Verizon, AT&T or Sprint (I'm currently on an old brick phone on Verizon). I'm in Virginia, fwiw.  

Also, now that it's a CDMA/GSM hybrid, would it still need a SIMM card? (forgive me, I am the neophyte on these things)

Every iteration of the iPhone has retained the pricing structure of the previous version since they dipped down the price from the craziness of the iPhone 1 launch.

My outsider view (iPod Touch owner) is if you use the camera a lot, play action-type games that really push the processor a lot, and d/l huge amounts of data frequently, it might be worth upgrading from 3GS. Siri could be a phone-seller for people that are sick of typing on the go.

Fundamentally though, if you're happy with your 3GS and it does what you need to, then might as well keep waiting for the mythical 5.

Yup. I would figure that they might not be required on CDMA carriers, but you'll need one for international travel, as that's almost exclusively GSM.

Oops.  

Siri was an App (I assume Apple has busily been removing all traces of it from the App Store, but Google searches will pull up some of the user comments from last year on it), it was in one of the "Best Apps" books I have, and I seem to recall Apple acquiring the small company and its tech to integrate it. So there's no doubt Siri worked on older phones (and on my iPod Touch), it's just a question of whether this integrated version requires something in the 4S to function, I guess.

What, do you have adamantium nails or something? I've got a launch iPhone4, had it nearly a year and a half, and I would say it's significantly less scratched up than any other phone I've had for the same amount of time. In fact, I think I remember when it got it's first tiny little scratchline something like 9 months after i bought it.

Nope, regular old nails.  imo the back is very scratch prone and I'm real careful with it, like I would be with any of my electronics.
