Hey I finally tried out Face Time via my iPod Touch 4th Gen with a co-worker who just got an iPhone 4 yesterday. Our Wi-Fi at work is decent. Although it worked pretty well there was some substantial delay in my voice coming out of his phone (I guess you'd only notice that if you're goofing off with it in the same room as we were). The image seemed a bit dark at times, though maybe my default brightness setting is set a bit dim to begin with. I like that you can use either of the recipient's device's cameras. So certainly it's the front camera that's intended for FaceTime. But if, say, your buddy is crawling around the ventilation duct work battling Alien creatures, you can see out his iPhone 4/Touch 4th Gen's back-facing video cam and see the action from his point of view.  To call me (certainly I have to have Wi-Fi enabled and working), he just needed to use my e-mail address assigned to my AppleID (iTunes login). iPhone 4 users don't have to login, and I can reach him via his phone number (the "normal" method for iPhone 4 users, I guess you'd say). The person making the Face Time call keeps hearing a mild ringing sound until the recipient accepts the video call. You can drag a small in-set video window from corner to corner that shows your own video image (shows what the recipient is seeing), which helps you make sure your iPhone/Touch is positioned OK. |

Ergh. A good move for them, but I'm still going with my plan of waiting to see what this summer's new version is. I don't care about Verizon, but I do want a 4GS/5 avaiable so I can spend too much money and sign a new contract to get rid of my 3G.

I'm strongly considering it, but am still a little concerned about Verizon having some of the data issues ATT first had due to over congestion on their 3g network. If there's only one verizon tower near you - and there's 10 people on it - you have to share that data 10 ways.. which is going to lead to dial-up (or worse) speeds. Unless of course, Verizon upgrades it to handle more data traffic.. I know Sprint sure as hell won't (there's only one tower here and a bunch of us on it - so my speeds are poor) even though I've been submitting tickets to them for months now. They'll "check into it" and marked the tower to "look at". Being out of contract with Sprint, this just may be what I'm looking for to jump ship. Any news on the plans? Unlimited data? |

Nope, no plan information announced today. I'm not leaving ATT, but I hope many do so that it relieves congestion on ATT's network and the competition forces ATT to have better plans and pricing to keep customers.

I don't think this puts a big dent in Android's market yet. Android phones are now available all up and down the price range. Hell, I just got my Droid Incredible for free a few weeks ago, and that's still a highly regarded phone. The iphone on Verizon is going to be available at iphone 4 prices, so, what, $200+? There's still a market of people that want a smartphone but balk at the price, and that's where the android phones come in. Plus, there's so many android phones out there that it's not going anywhere any time soon.
I think there's also a chunk of us that prefer the android OS to the iphone OS.

Heh. Seriously. If you want LTE in 2011, it's unlikely you're going to have it on an iPhone. Droid Bionic or some similarly featured phone in the future (dual core, LTE, 4.3" screen) will be my next phone on Verizon. That being said, my wife should have a new iPhone come February.  |
