I'm actually thinking about getting one despite my hatred for all things Apple.  The reason for this sudden change in thinking is due to these Apps that look like they might actually be useful and cheap for learning Japanese.

           Kanji Flip                                Japanese Flip

Basically they're apps which help to test your Japanese and kanji vocabulary which have gotten some pretty good reviews.  It uses some sort of algorithm so that the ones that you get wrong will keep popping back up (from time to time) until you get them right.  Now apparently they work completely offline so I could also use them on the Itouch (which I also don't own) I believe.

Now if the Itouch had Bluetooth I would completely go for it but it doesn't.  I refuse to go back to wires again.  I'm also a technophile like most people on here so I sort of like the idea of getting a new phone.  I tried out the display model today and I had a few concerns.  When you're typing an email or MMS message, can you get the screen to flip so that it displays horizontally?  There just doesn't seen to be enough room for the keyboard when it's displayed vertically and I was making mistakes all over the place!  Cellphone calling costs 40 cents a minute (actually more like 60 cents with the current exchange rate) so you can believe that I basically never talk on the phone and text messaging is EXTREMELY important to me.  If I have to fumble around with that terrible keyboard then it's a deal breaker for me.

Secondly, I managed to get my Bluetooth headset paired with the display model (the little "B" was lit up blue) but whenever I went to the Ipod section and tried to play some music the blue B went away and the music played out of the Ipod speakers instead! Was I doing something wrong?  Maybe I had my headphones set to the headset function but that's hard to believe because I was just using them to connect to my PDA.

Anyways those are my two main concerns. I'm thinking I'll probably not end up doing it because my current cellphone is plenty fine as it is and is probably more technologically advanced than the Iphone despite being about 3 years older-although it does lack that lovely touch screen (and Bluetooth).  Besides my current phone bill is about $40 a month and I'm not sure if having it go up to $80 a month for 24 months is really worth it just so I can use it to practice my Japanese.  Perhaps the Itouch is best for me afterall? (But no Bluetooth   crybabycrybaby)

I was a total blackberry junkie whore.  Now I'm an even bigger iphone junkie whore.

Downsides:

1.  Shorter battery life.
2.  Email not quite as reliable.  (Usually it is just as fast, but occasionally the service coverage is not as good).
3.  Email features not as rich.

Upsides:

1.  iPod touch features.  'nuff said.
2.  app store.  Last night I downloaded the Bible, the complete works of Shakespeare, and the Federal Rules of Evidence.
3.  Cool/"X" factor.

When you're typing an email or MMS message, can you get the screen to flip so that it displays horizontally?

Safari will flip the keyboard.  MMS and e-mail will not.  A little practice with knowing which part of your finger will hit it will improve your skills quickly.  And there is autocorrect.

For the Bluetooth, I know the initial firmware did not have that feature available.  I've never messed with it, so I can't tell you for sure, but I haven't seen anything that says they have changed it.

Best phone I have ever used, and I work for VERIZON WIRELESS!!! Although the service can't compare to Verizon's.  I drop 1 call a week, compared to VZ, I haven't dropped a call in 3 years disgust

I've been tempted to get an iPhone but was wondering if you can read and edit Excel sheets with any app on it?

They landscape keyboard only pops in apps and safari. It does not rotate in SMS or E-mail. Supposedly down the pipe but I've given up on Apple making sense with stupid shit regarding basic things that people hvae been asking for for 2 years. You can not do MMS through the iPhone. No picture/video messages you have to go through the e-mail to do that.

iPhones bluetooth is retardly gimped and useless. You won't get music through any wireless headset, can pair with a headset to talk to.

Overall the iPhone in of itself is a great phone. There is nothing better that it for internet and media. But it's shortcomings are glaring and Apples stubborn refuseal to fix and work out things that people have been yelling about for such a long time now is getting ridiculous. Landscape in e-mail and SMS would be awesome. FUCKING MMS would be awesome. The ability to copy and paste would be fucking nice. BACKGROUND SERVICES. That was promised in august.

I've used it since the new one came out. And for the most part it is a great phone. Just the glaring issues get to you sometimes.

Well I think im gonna pass on it and get the iTouch.  I just cant see myself spending an extra 40 bucks for 24 months.  That's a lot of money.  When's the next iteration of the iTouch coming out anyways?  Doesn't Apple always obsolete their own products every 6 months?  We're probably due.

My new job does not supply Blackberries/phones to peons beneath management level, so I'll be buying an iPhone in the next couple of weeks. My wife has one and absolutely loves it. While I'm well aware of its limitations (battery life sucks, typing is meh, etc.), the thing is by far the coolest gadget out there. I've done a LOT of research on phones in preparation for having my company Blackberry taken away, and to date I have yet to find one I like as much as the iPhone.

I love my iPhone, but AT&T's coverage is...underwhelming.  I drop 10X as many calls as I every did with Verizon, and there are a shit-ton of 3G dead spots around here.

Buy a charging cable for work, YK, especially if your overlords allow you to listen to music in your cube.  Pandora will kill it in a day.  AOL Radio will kill it quicker.

Biggest issues for me is that it doesn't ring loud enough and if you set it on Push, the battery lasts for shit.

Other than that it's pretty cool, but not something I would have if I my company didn't pay for it.

There's a free app called Easy Writer that allows you to type horizontally and then send the typed text to an email.

Very handy.

Today I have to hand in my iPhone.  I'm a contractor and the company I contract to is no longer paying for phones for contractors (something about saving money).  So my actual employer will now supply my phone - a Treo 800.

I'll probably just use my Zune for music listening, but thanks for the tip. I hate hate hate having low battery on any device I own, so a charging cable at work is a great idea.

Actually one thing with the iPhone, if you just play music with it the battery life turns into an insane long time. Like having it playing for an entire trans-atlantic flight and noticing that only a sliver of the battery was gone.

And that app only does e-mail, that is besides the fact that why do I need an app to get functionality out of a the phone that everyone and there mother think should of been there anyway.

What I'll feel when I get the app that gives me fucking copy and paste. Which I know is being made and probably released by a European carrier.

Canuck,
If you're thinking about getting an iPhone mainly for the Japanese learning software, you might want to take a look at some of the stuff for learning Japanese on a DS. There are some solid programs out there for that platform.

Well I tried Japanese Coach but that was too easy.  What I'm really looking for is an easy program to help test my vocabulary and kanji progress not so much learn it.  I could try the Japanese "games" but I think they would be a lot of work and I wouldn't be so likely to use them.

That's exactly how me and the GF wound up with our iPhones.  I feel dirty for having one.

It amazes me what people will spend money on for this thing.  The most popular app right now is iFart, and app that costs a dollar and makes your phone make fart noises.  For free, I can understand, but spending money on this? Slightly more confusing to me is iBeer, an app that makes it look like your phone is full of beer that you can pretend to drink.  This also costs money.  To me, it's the equivalent of paying money to be able to do the "got your nose" or "look, I'm pulling my thumb off" tricks.  Amazing.

Not that I would ever buy one of these apps, but people pay for novelty crap all the time.  Think fake puke or fake doggy turds.  It's really no different and costs about the same.

Yeah, my wife and I have yet to spend money on any apps, though if I did it would probably be a couple of the games. There's a lot of good free stuff out there if you look hard enough. I just downloaded Lose It! which is a terrific calorie/exercise tracker. I've also go the Amazon app which takes you directly to their page, because I used that a lot when shopping for quick price comparisons. Now Playing is another favorite, for finding movie showtimes.

I really, really want to try Hero of Sparta, which is supposedly one of the best iPhone games out there, but $9.99 is still a bit steep for me.

1)  I use a screen protector that's pretty much smudge proof.  It's the Power Support Crystal and is seriously awesome.

2)  No.

When you rotate it, is the screen horizontal like a table or vertical like a wall?  If horiz., the sensor is not being triggered.  Hold it vertical when you rotate it.  If it still doesn't work, call Apple.

I just use the microfiber cloth thing that came with it. Works well. And sometimes I have to give it a flick to switch which then doesn't always work. It seems that the accelerometer can be finicky at times.
