I wonder if the marketing campaign will highlight "OSCAR WINNER Robert Downey" and "OSCAR NOMINATED Jeremy Renner." Maybe they'll only give Avengers' parts to Oscar nominated performers?

Agree with the linked article. Seeing Norton on screen with Downey Jr. would have been cool.

That said, it could still turn out ok.

Also, that same article mentions Sharlto Copley and Walton Goggins as rumored possibles for the role. Walton Goggins f*ckin rules, but I can't quite picture him as Banner. He's a different kind of actor.

A) I think Clark Gregg is worried about his BO next to Scarlett Johansson

B)  Wow, Joss really doesn't fit in with that group at all, does he?

Some chatter from Avengers screenwriter Zak Penn (only some vagueness on Avengers as he's under a non-disclosure agreement):
http://www.superherohype.com/features/articles/165637-zak-penn-on-the-avengers-a-alphas
Quote
SuperHeroHype: Last time we spoke you were hard at work on "The Avengers" script. How do you feel about the way that project developed?

Zak Penn: Do you believe in Joss Whedon? Do you believe in him? I believe in him! That's my comment. If you believe in Joss you should be excited. Actually Joss and I went to the same college so we have a long history.

I'm very excited. I can't wait to see what happens with it, you know. And it's weird because “Alphas” is kind of almost the inverse. If you know the comic book world, this is kind of the flipside of something like "The Avengers," so it will be weird next year to have "Avengers" coming out while I'm working on this show ["Alphas" is a SyFy channel show premiering soon].
One thing that should make you shudder... one of his writing credits is "The Last Action Hero."  paranoid Another is the ridiculous (albeit reasonably successful at the box office) Owen Wilson actioner, "Behind Enemy Lines." And Elektra? X-Men the Last Stand? Be afraid...

I believe in Joss... not sure I believe in "this other guy."  smirk I'm sure it sounded fine to Marvel that Penn has a history in comic book films but it's debatable if he has a history in good films.

shooting starts today:

Quote
Film Greatness. On the Eve of Our Endeavor, I celebrate an american classic -- or possibly all of them.

Hi Pumpkins, joss here.

Tomorrow we start shooting (I THINK I'm legally permitted to say that). Day one. That's right. We'll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:

[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss's keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in "Stormy Monday", drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave]

Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I'll be checking in from time to time, if there's news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake) . None of it will be Avengers news -- I have some very denty pillows to remind of that -- but I may have tidbits. (They're not about Firefly. I should say that up front, if only to protect Sis Mo from the HATORZ.)

Some of you may be saying, Joss! Why this link, here, now, why, huh, howcum? My friend Allyx turned me on to these guys, and I'll tell you, they've gotten me through this intensely pressurized, preply time. I strongly recommend checking out their other vids -- I've watched them many many times, and I have a very special place for "Teamwork" in my heart. These guys are the guys. And IS there a better movie title than "Eagles Are Turning People Into Horses"? I thought not.

So wish me luck. DO IT! LUCK! NOW! I'm off to finish some Buffy pages, and then figure out what the movie is about already. I'm pretty sure it's about the Justice League [Marvel Lawyers re-enter, unspeakability occurs] or possibly something else. I'll get it. I've been looking forward to this. For about 46 years.

Catchphrase!

I kind of wish they'd dropped Black Widow from the lineup in favor of Wasp and Ant Man/Yellowjacket.  But that's just me being a huge dork.  I would imagine they only want heroes with established (or nearly established) film franchises.

I'm wondering if they tried to do SFX for those two and found it was either too costly or it just didn't look good. Personally I won't miss them, never cared for either character.

Of course I have high hopes for the film but my flabby gut tells me a presumably 2-hour movie (at most) and 6 different super hero-type characters means it's going to take some serious mojo for any individual character to have enough screen time to make a serious impression. I mean, Iron Man 2 arguably couldn't find enough time for Iron Man/Tony Stark because of all the supporting cast running around. Now imagine that with a few more guys in armor and spandex running around.

Joss has lots of experience with ensemble casts though so if anyone can spread the wealth sufficiently imho, he can.  icon_smile

Meh I'm less worried about an ensemble cast.  Oceans 11, Star Wars, The Dark Knight, Steel Magnolias (ok i like chick flicks), Good Fellas, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather 1 and 2, usual Suspects, Royal Tenebaums, etc. etc.  That is just off the top of my head.

Brian Bendis (to be sure, not exactly "objective"  icon_smile) sounds keen on the script for this and has a brief thumbs up for Captain America, which he claims to have viewed...

Brian Bendis Praises The Avengers Script And Captain America: The First Avenger!
http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/MarvelFreshman/news/?a=41280
Quote from: Brian Bendis
It's an amazing screenplay. And I don't hype frivolously. I think it's the best thing Joss Whedon's ever written. I was in awe of it, and I still am.
...
What can you say about Captain America: The First Avenger?
"I've seen it, and it was great. Red Skull, played by Hugo Weaving, is a really good villain, probably the best from Marvel [Studios]."'
fwiw. I mean, I realize it's like quoting Stan Lee as saying "Oh those two films are gonna be good!"  icon_smile

But I think that's the first person not working directly on Captain America that I've heard claim to have seen the whole thing. Probably they just screened it so the guys working on The Avengers can see how the character plays there.

I'm monitoring Variety a bit as they'll often get to review something about a week before it's release or so. Thor reviews came out awfully early, I think because it released overseas far earlier than I did here, if I recall correctly.

Getting back to that Avengers promo poster, I find it interesting Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) won't have a mask at all. I understand not having the garish Hawkeye get-up, but did think he'd have some kinda mask.

And the poster does seem to show just a bit of purple on his costume, just below his right first there (see here, just Hawkeye from that):

That's the best gigantic "A" I've ever seen...  smirk

Some cool Cap and Iron Man (promoting The Avengers) artwork at Comic-Con:
http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/167951-sdcc-marvel-studios-exclusive-comic-con-art
*It's amusing all the hyperventilating about IM's armor designs. I think some folks expect him to have a different look every hour.  icon_razz If they are revamping the look, I expect they don't want to give that away just yet.

I hope either The Avengers or Iron Man 3 let Tony develop some armor for special situations as in the comics (space, deep underwater, night-time stealth etc.).

Mentioned in the Cap thread, Marvel pulled the leaked teaser from some of the Cap prints at critics' screenings. This seemed to lead to confusion in reviews as some talked about it, and others saw simply a post-credits title screen -- which wouldn't make me feel good if I sat through several minutes of credits for it.

Concept art for Hawkeye:
http://www.superherohype.com/news/articles/167985-sdcc-hawkeye-art-for-the-avengers-revealed
*No doubt this has fans aboil that he won't be clad in purple PJs with a pointy mask on. While I'm not necessarily crazy about the leather look, I don't really think Jeremy Renner would sign up for purple PJs and point mask, and I doubt they'd wanna cover up his visage like that. This seems in keeping with his attire during his cameo in Thor.

And keep in mind it's just concept art; doesn't really look that much like Jeremy Renner to me.
