Kept waiting for someone else to post this here.  Apparently he's not only doing Avengers 2, but he's doing an Avengers or SHIELD related spinoff for TV.

I must admit I'm quite disappointed in this, but I'm no big fan of superheroes anyway. I'd rather see Joss Whedon do another series based on his own properties.

Give the man a chance to play in the big leagues for a little while.  We've all known what a great writer and director he is, but the world at large hasn't.  I don't begrudge him his moment in the spotlight.  Besides, maybe he'll be able to get his side projects financed that much more quickly now that he's playing on the A team.

I've been thinking this for a while, but I think people might be expecting the wrong thing from this show.

I don't think we're going to see superheroes much, if at all.  I'm predicting that the focus of the show is going to be personnel.  Probably a lot of desk grunt moments interspersed with some human agents in the field.  And then, every once in a while, they'll go ask The Vision a question or something.

EDIT: And I just watched the video (), and I think that's kind of like what we'll be seeing, actually.

I think you're underestimating Joss's ability to film action sequences.  I'm sure there will be plenty of droll scenes of office life with the requisite drama and comedy, but I believe we'll also have a big bad each season that will require some fun fights and other bouts of secret agent insanity.

Oh, I don't mean to imply that the whole show will be like the opening sequence of Cabin in the Woods.

I think it'll be like most Whedon shows.  Lots of humorous character-building downtime followed by nice bouts of action.

I'm just saying I don't think a lot of that is going to involve superheroes.  I'm betting it'll be more about the unsung heroes in the background.

Some of my guess has to do with how Joss has worked in the past.  A lot of it has to do with TV budgets. 

I'm sure there will be guest bits from superheroes, since the networks are going to want to sell the show, but my hunch is that they won't be the focus.

The beginning of the show would have to have some exchange like:
"I thought you were dead."
"No, they only wanted it to seem that way so that I could work on this secret project.  Let me get you up to speed."

Lame.  

It would come off as they brought back the character because they knew he'd be popular on the show, but it would be a cop out.  Whereas, if it takes place in the past, it's logical that the character would be there.  It's also more poignant that way.  Plus it's an easy explanation for why we never see Iron Man or Thor or Black Widow or Captain America or the Hulk or Hawkeye or any other actor that would be too expensive for a TV show.  Except Nick Fury.  I don't know how they're going to get around that, exactly.  I imagine he'll make a (very expensive) appearance in the pilot and send them on their way.

Of course, that doesn't mean the show won't take place in the past, but I'm sure that's not the case (as does the fact that they said the show is concurrent).

I know characters get resurrected all the time in comic books, but it feels cheap to me.

Still, happy to have him back.  Happy to have another Whedon show on the air, too.  So I'm sure I'll be watching anyway.

So a did a quick search and found some stuff I'm not sure if it was mentioned already in this thread, more speculation, but backed up with some findings:

So remember in The Avengers where Coulson was talking about dating a cellist in Portland, or some city that I forget?

Well, in the Marvel universe, there's the Scarlet Witch character who is a cellist. She's also the main squeeze for Vision, the character a bunch of people rumored that Coulson was going to become. Of course, that's probably where the rumors started from, but cool nonetheless.

Also, the Item 47 short is pretty cool, and actually works as a test bed episode for the TV show. I know I'm looking forward to this show.

There's just something I liked about how they try to portray SHIELD agents in the films and shorts so far, they're all competent, well trained and equipped, but get a little wacky with all the crazy stuff they have to deal with.
