Sci-Fi.com reports that New Line has already secured the movie rights to Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell.  I havent read this yet, but it sounds good.  The plot line seems very similar to a book series I read years ago.  I cant remember the names of the books, but I believe the hero's name was D'arcy or something similar.

Awesome!

I don't think the book can be perfectly adapted to a movie (the style of the writing, footnotes, rich background on historic magical texts, etc. were a large part of its charm).

However, if they could just pull off the rousing magical fantasy adventure bits in Victorian England setting it would be good enough for me.

Oooh casting:

Johnathan Strange - Johnny Depp
Mr. Norrell - Anthony Hopkins?
Stephen - Denzel Washington or maybe the guy that plays on 24
Mrs. Strange - Keira Knightley (just because she's hot)
Lady whats-her-name = Rachel Weisz (ditto)
Childermass - Gary Oldman or Alan Rickman

I realize I'm probably overbudget at this point... smile

I'd rather them try and find non-A list actors like they did with Harry Potter.

I think a movie of this book could be really very interesting, but it would be hard to condense it into the traditional two hours.  Though some of the cast choices you folks have named sound really cool, I think it'd be better to go with relative unknown actors, just for freshness (and not because they're "hot").

Also, a minor nitpick--the book is not set in Victorian England; rather, it takes place during the latter part of the Georgian and beginning of the Regency.

I pictured "the man with the thistledown hair" as David Bowie (it's not unlike his role as the Goblin King in "Labyrinth"). Also Tony Robinson (Baldric of "Blackadder") as Vinculus.
