I'm watching Jay Leno tonight for the sole reason that Juliana Hatfield is performing. She's on after the commercial and it's been HORRIBLE watching Jay. His monologue sucked. I FFed through his interviews, then had to semi-watch his interview with Dara Torres.

Anyway, just thought you all should know. After Jules, I can go to bed and never watch Jay again. finger

I agree that he sucks. But, for some reason The Tonight Show is #1 in the ratings week in and week out. I don't understand it. Maybe it's because it is "The Tonight Show", who knows.

I like him. By like him I mean I think he's a good guy. He's not that funny, though he can be sometimes. He's funnier than Dave Letterman, as is just about everyone else on the planet. His interviews are way too planned. He's certainly no Johnny Carson, and I don't think we'll get another Johnny Carson in my lifetime frown. Still, he's a hell of a car guy and I hope his next gig is some kind of Top Gear type of show, which could last 10 seasons just on the vehicles he has in his garage.

+1.  Poor Jay, he just didn't have the staying power that Johnny did.

This is quite counter to the general buzz in Hollywood right now.  There have been numerous articles that basically say that all involved (except maybe Conan) are starting to second guess the decision they made several years ago for the handoff.  Leno isn't ready to leave, he's still on top of the ratings, and Conan's popularity seems to be waning a bit with Kimmell and Ferguson getting a lot more buzz these days.

But the kill clause in Conan's contract ($40 million or something) is so huge that NBC seems to think they have no choice but to continue forward.  Meanwhile, almost all of the other networks and some cable outlets are chomping at the bit to throw Leno some major league money to come their way once his non-compete is over.

You take that back!!!!!  At least if we're talking about Dave back on NBC.  He's still funny today, though.

letterman = comedy gold

conan = comedy gold

leno = Hee Haw

(although, to be fair, back when leno used to regularly guest on the letterman nbc show, he was one funny mofo.  since taking over for carson, he's had to tone it down to a level that older folks would understand/not be offended by/can tell to friends.)

exactly my concern as well.  i think Conan is hands-down the best of the bunch, but i can't see them letting his style of comedy continue unchanged in an earlier time slot.  i guess we'll know soon enough...

I think they've already said explicitly that Conan's style will change when he moves to the Leno slot.

I have no idea if these are actual segments that appear on the show, but his site is cool: http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/

There were rumours awhile back that he was going to be one of the co-hosts for the American version of Top Gear, but he shot those down.

Leno has the potential to be far funnier than he is now - and maybe a change of network will spark that change. Right now he's mostly adequate; I can watch him, occasionally smile, but Leno's not someone I think of as being cutting edge.

Old man Letterman stopped being amusing to me years ago; he's far too crotchety now and relying on years of people's stored up memories of funnier days. I used to like him beyond comparison in high school (ahh, ten year reunion coming up)but now, it's the same old stuff every night with him. Top ten lists, weird grimaces, "Great moments in presidential speeches" (I get it, Dave, Bush is dumb), etc.  I'll watch Dave without any enthusiasm.

Conan's good, though I admit I liked him more four years ago when I was still in college.  Don't know why I don't watch or record him now. So, he's a relative cipher now to me.

I actually like Craig Ferguson the best, though maybe the bland Leno's rating would always beat Ferguson's. He's an acquired taste perhaps, don't you agree my furry little penguins?

Dude! Get Bed (rockin'), get In Exile Deo (poppy), get Made In China (garagey), get How to Walk Away (polished), get Beautiful Creature/total system failure (shy/garagey), get Hey Babe (fresh). Get it all. She was pretty good. I think the new song she sang was to low for her range. Sounds good in studio, but live it was a little lacking. She looked great, though, and as the song progressed, she sounded more confident.

I've really been grooving to her unreleased record, God's Foot. I had it years ago, but the CD bit the dust for some reason. I refound it and it's just great. It's a shame that her record label dropped her before it was released.

You must read this stellar write-up someone did last week about Jules' career. Take a look.

Sheesh. It seemed like they did. After every joke in the monologue, it seemed like the band had to make its presence known with a slide or a punch or a rimshot or something. I thought it was LAME. As if Jay's jokes weren't funny enough on their own, they had to be accented. They might as well have put up an "APPLAUSE" sign over his head.

I agree it can certainly get lame sometimes, though I think it can be funny at times that I've seen it (and my watching consists of about 10 minutes once every few weeks or so).

However! That reminds me that Dave Letterman has on his show the worst, least funny, awfulest, horrible Paul Schafer (sp?). That guy is like a black hole of anti-humor, where humor just cannot escape.

Paul Schaffer makes me so mad. Just looking at him, I get furious.

I also remembered that I watch Headlines most Monday nights on Leno. I'll also admit I frequently consider muting the TV while I watch.
