James Cameron has spoken about the films that he would like to see re-released in 3D, singling out The Godfather as one he would particularly favour.

Quote

Speaking to The Huffington Post about 3D, Cameron said: "Conversion has a place and it's a place for films we know and love - Star Wars, Jaws; I would love to see The Godfather in 3D.

"But it has to be done by the filmmaker. It has to be done by the director because there are so many creative choices that have to be made and it has to be done right. And the studio's got to be willing to spend the money to do it right."

Discussing which other films of his own might be suitable for conversion, he remarked: "I think Terminator 2 would rock in 3D. But Aliens - because of the claustrophobia - might be a little too intense."

All films mentioned i love...The Godafther,IMO,would be the least likely i would of thought for 3D

Would i go and see any of these films in 3D if they hit the Cinema...yes,most likely all mentioned, just to see them on the big screen(again in some cases),not really because of 3D though

Jaws?  I became so afraid of water I couldn't even get near a toilet.  It has ruined the ocean for me to this day.  3D might make me afraid of the rain.  But not a bad suggestion for conversion.

The Godfather?

What possible benefit do you get out of Godfather 3d? Sounds like a joke. Except it's probably not.

Exactly.  I fail to see the benefit.  There are no scenes that could potentially benefit from added visual depth.  I could see films like Jaws get the treatment, but this just seems stupid.

I've never seen any of the Godfather movies (dislike Mafia-themed stuff) and it being 3D sure wouldn't get me interested.  I don't see the point.

It's tough to insist that it is a film that "must" be experienced given its background and accolades because of your aversion to the genre, but having read the book three or four times and seeing it brought to life on screen, it truly is a cinematic achievement of the highest caliber.  Still, I understand your position as my wife has a strong aversion to anything war-related, although she did give Black Hawk Down and The Hurt Locker each a chance (didn't like either).  The only war film she enjoyed was Tigerland due to its unique perspective.

Still, I'm not surprised to see that converting it to 3D would not make you any more likely to see it.  Hell, I've seen in more times than I can count and I have zero interest in a 3D conversion.  Perhaps the added depth could aid in making the viewer feel more immersed in the film (being "right there" for poignant conversations and meaningful events), but it's still hard to justify given the film's content and style.

3D immersion is relevant, and doesn't always need to be over-the-top.

That being said, it would certainly be an odd choice as a frontrunner in converting movies since it doesn't have that gimmicky visual element to it.

I think one of the big reasons why people are calling 3D a gimmick is because it's mostly just associated with action movies at this point. The thing about 3D is that it can increase immersion in a fantastic way as long as it's done right. It changes a movie from being a flat plane into a collection of characters and scenery that look solid and real, as if you could reach out and touch them. Some people dismiss 3D outright or can't experience the effect for one reason or another, and that's fine. For some of us however, 3D is a great immersion enhancer.

As for The Godfather, it's a movie that was made for 2D and it should remain that way IMO. A new movie of the same style could benefit greatly from 3D in the right hands however.

I supported Cameron and Avatar even when it was bashed heavily, however I feel the 3D re-release of Titanic as nothing more than a money grab taking advantage of the anniversary and my respect for him has gone down. I honestly thought he'd be better than to get into post-conversions, and now seeing him suggest something which wouldn't gain anything from it at all makes me sad. I kind of feel that since his success of Avatar, that he's seen as the 3D posterboy for the industry, and I wouldn't doubt if the industry is putting pressure on him to mention some ideas in order for them to make them happen as he seems to be a powerful voice in the industry. Godfather in 3D would be incredibly sad in terms of shameless greed.

I for one haven't found 3D to be a gimmick, at least when used appropriately.  I thought it was excellently implemented in Avatar and was pretty hella cool in Tron: Legacy, but there have certainly been films that used it more as a gimmick (Wrath of the Titans, the newest Resident Evil film, etc).  Until it is consistently wielded with a skilled hand there will continue to be more gimmicks than skilled applications of the medium.  And that's a shame, as the added depth possible with 3D is pretty compelling.

Exactly. It's not so much a gimmick if it's done well like Avatar was. I loved that movie and I thought it was brilliant. But it's all these post-conversions that are hurting the potential of 3D in general.
