What seems an unfortunate development -- at least in terms of continuity -- for Iron Man 2 (which is in production, and Marvel is pushing for a summer 2010 release afik):

Iron Man 2 Switcheroo: Cheadle Replaces Howard
http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b63637_iron_man_2_switcheroo_cheadle_replaces.html
Quote
It seems Terrence Howard just didn't have the mettle for another Iron Man.

The Oscar-nominated actor is out of his role as Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes, Tony Stark's BFF and would-be flying partner War Machine, in Iron Man 2, after negotiations with Marvel fell through, per the Hollywood Reporter, due to "financial differences."

Don Cheadle has been tapped as Howard's replacement for the second go-round, in which Rhodes and his heroic alter ego War Hammer get a much meatier part.
I don't think I see enough movies because I still remember Howard more for his early role as the drummer in Mr. Holland's Opus, with the character later dying offscreen in Vietnam.

Because the sequel's release date is so tight (rather than the more typical 3 years between franchise flicks), they presumably didn't have time for a lengthy salary negotiation.

You would think that as high as Cheadle's star has risen that he will cost them more than whatever Howard was asking for.  Also, I've heard that involved parties have major issues with how 2 will come out given the lack of time to develop a quality script.

Maybe they thought they could pull the ol' switcheroo because all black people rook same?! oh noes!

Or maybe "Tyler Perry's War Machine" just doesn't have the same wow factor.

easy fix:  Rhodes has an accident in the middle of nowhere that disfigures him and the plastic surgery isn't able to replicate his face the same way it was before since no one present knows what he looked like.

Well, Robert Downey, Jr, looked a lot like Don Cheadle when he wore his black makeup in Tropic Thunder. So they could just get him to play both roles!

Agreed.  As long as they don't replace Downey Jr. with Clooney or Pitt and it doesn't become Ocean's Iron Man Fourteen, I'll be ok with the cast change.

Agree with the Cheadle sentiment.  Love him!  It's a fine choice imho.

Speaking of superheroes, I just checked and the Hancock film isn't coming out until November 25th, with four different SKUs.

  • (Unrated Single-Disc Edition)
  • (Unrated) [Blu-ray]
  • (Two-Disc Unrated Edition)
  • (Single-Disc Rated Edition)

Seems like a bit of a delay more than the recent norm...

It's a small pet peeve of mine when they switch actors and keep the same person in films.  Cheedle is one of my favorite actors, however.

By "keep the same person" do you mean like the previous actor's character?  In Iron Man's universe, it would be a bigger issue if they replaced Rhodes with someone else as that would deviate from the comics too much, IMHO.

From earlier research, they're already deviating.  Sources indicate that Stark never publicly revealed himself as Iron Man, just stated that Iron Man was his body guard.

Yeah. Like making CHeedle be the same guy as Terrence Howard.  Just one of those things that annoys me.  I'm not familiar with iron man so if changing the actor makes more sense, fine.  Just a bit irksome that they didn't lock him up when the first movie was being negotiated.

Other movie pet peeves:

Car driving scenes with actors talking and the car is clearly on the back of a flatbed truck (all the other cars are 3 feet below them). It's not that hard to drive and act at the same time: Homicide Life on the Street is a brilliant example.

Empty FRIGGING cups.  Why not put half a cup worth of liquid in it so that when the actor carries it it actually has weight and when he sets it down it doesn't sound like an empty cup??? GAH!  Probably my #1!

I think that would be more of a gripe at sound editing than the props.  Most everything you hear in a tv show, and especially in movies, is all done in post-production.

Dirty Sexy Money had the sound of a pump action shotgun being racked *twice* in the space of a minute.  Every shotgun on screen was a breech loader.

I loved Don Cheadle. Don't see him as War Machine though. Something about the chemistry between Howard and Downey though was just awesome. I think it was best shown during the "I thought you said you were jogging" bit on the phone.

Funny part is that they probably were acting their lines out separately for their respective parts on the phone.

I'm going to give Cheadle the benefit of the doubt.  I've seen him pull of a myriad of roles before, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him do well with this one.

Oh no doubt it was shot at totally different times, which is a tribute to Favreau. But that and the times when they are together (like the plane bit) are great. I think Cheadle will be great too, as he is in everything, but I don't know yet. Give me a bit of time and I may come around.

The point of the discussion was that even a pump-action shotgun loads the shell through the breech.  The opposite would be a muzzle-loading shotgun.  If you can find me a modern one of these, I'll be impressed.

I bought the DVD a few weeks back and have watched it a number of times now. I've come to the conclusion that's Howard's performance was fairly sub par for him. I think a sequel will fly with Cheadle as long as Robert Downey Jr. and Paltrow are back. I'm going to miss Jeff Bridges though, who IMO gave the best performance out of the 4.

Interesting little Mickey-Rourke-possibly-as-villain rumor for Iron Man 2:

Mickey Rourke in 'Iron Man 2'?

and Original Source Variety:
Mickey Rourke sizes up 'Iron Man 2'

Quote
... Rourke is in discussions to play the Crimson Dynamo, a heavily tattooed Russian arms dealer. He's considered to be an evil version of Iron Man because he battles the superhero in a nuclear-powered suit of armor.
Sam Rockwell (whom I forever know as The Red Shirt in Galaxy Quest, but does mostly serious roles) is in talks for another villain in it. I hope to God it doesn't become a Spider-Man 3 "too many villains to keep track of" type sequel. disgust

well, they're talking about Justin Hammer and the Crimson Dynamo, and there have been hints about the Mandarin, so there's 3 that could show up.  Also, most of the best superhero movies have been ones with only 1 villain- Batman Returns had 2 and that's where the series started to decline (penguins with rocket launchers?  seriously?) and Spiderman 3 was a wreck.  the only superhero movies that I can think of that pulled it off are the Nolan Batman's with 2 villains per movie, but let's face it, those 2 movies are pretty much the perfect storm creativity wise.

Spiderman 3 has a lot more wrong with it than just too many villains. I mean, they don't even give Venom the correct dialogue. "I like being bad"...WTF! That should have been "we like being bad".

I hope to God it doesn't become a Spider-Man 3 "too many villains to keep track of" type sequel. disgust

Spiderman 3 has a lot more wrong with it than just too many villains. I mean, they don't even give Venom the correct dialogue. "I like being bad"...WTF! That should have been "we like being bad".

Good call there.

Nerd Tangent: I was always under the impression Venom did not think he was bad.  Wasn't he always acting as force of Justice, in his own twisted way?
