I'm kinda curious if Apple will be doing anything to placate all the people who bought an iPhone before they ran out of stock.  that's a pretty hefty price drop.

Anyone here have the 8GB? Did you find that you could put a decent amount of songs and stuff on it, or did the memory used by the OS, phone numbers, and other applications drain most of the memory?

I don't believe there is a 32GB version.  I'll be upgrading to the 16.  That's about what I need.

Yeah, I think I'll be switching to AT&T and getting the 3G 16 gig version later this summer. Here are the new phone stats from Gizmodo.com:

Quote
Key Features:
Charcoal Back
Solid Metal Buttons
Same 3.5" Display
Camera
Flush Headphone Jack
Dramatically Improved Audio

3G Advantage
Showing a EDGE vs 3G comparison loading a webpage, 3G took 21 seconds. EDGE...waiting...waiting...uhh...59 seconds! Same phone, same location. 2.8X faster - and they claim loads webpages faster than Nokia N95 (33 seconds) or Treo 750 (34 seconds).

Battery Life
8-10 hours of talk time
5 hours 3G talk time
5-6 hours of browing
24 hours of audio battery

And GPS!

And it's coming to 70 countries over the "next several months."

More Affordable
$199 for 8GB

$299 for 16GB (which also comes in white)

Coming July 11th

Yeah, the liveblog I was reading had a 32G version briefly listed.  Just looked and it was taken down since, so I guess just to the 16G.

I was tempted by the iPhone last year, especially after the price drop, but I managed to avoid temptation and got a free phone upgrade instead.  At $200 though, I don't know how I'll be able to resist.  And of course, if you're tempted by the $200 8GB then the 16GB is as irresistable as an upgrade from medium to large popcorn for $0.40.  I would've been satisfied with an 8GB a year ago, though, so I really should avoid being convinced I need 16GB to be happy.

If you're not interested in using this to play music or songs, is there any reason to get the 16GB version?  I just want a good phone with kickass internet and office apps.

When you say upgrade do you mean sell yours and buy a new one, or do you mean "I read that AT&T will let us reup and upgrade for cheaper or apple will take trade ins plus cash"?

I saw a story on Kotaku where they are selling games now for the iPhone, and those will most likely eat up some memory.

Buying the new one, giving my fiancee the old one, and swapping the SIM cards so I keep my number, and adding her to my plan.

The new MobileMe stuff is really cool too.  OTA syncing of my calendar/contacts is worth $99/year for me, especially since I never remember to sync my phone to my computer.  I'm too used to Blackberry world.

I wonder what the price will settle out to be when people start selling them.

As much of an Apple fanboy as I am, I have to warn folks about the "lower" pricing:

At&T is jacking up the data plan by $10/month, so in effect it's $240 more over the course of your 2-year contract.  Nothin comes for free!

So keep in mind the cheapest plan will now be $40 basic phone +$30 data = $70/month

- - -

Brilliant marketing though:  Twice the speed at half the cost!  It just rolls off the tongue.

Anyway, as much as I am impressed by the 3G, GPS and most of all better battery life, I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of improvement to the camera, no added storage, and still no word on MMS.

wait, they're going to have rate plans for basic phone cheaper than 60 bucks now for the iPhone?

oh, and apparently 3G coverage is kinda limited right now.  Make sure to check the Show 3G Coverage checkbox.

This may be enough to get me to get into an iPhone 200 dollars and only 20dollars more a month for 3G for me would be worth it I think. Since they added a way for apps to run in the background in a sense and I can do messaging and a lot more than I can now.

Dammit.  The price of the plan was already a big reason I didn't buy an iPhone a year ago, so the $10/month increase on top of that is a huge disinsentive.

Grumble.

It would be nice if they also reduced the iTouch prices too.

I read an article that Garmin and the other GPS companies are basically freaking out right now with integrated GPS coming to phones.

I did the same with the $500 model, but hey, it's a high tech gadget so I fully expected it to fall in price quicker than I'd like it too.

Well why buy a Garmin GPS if my phone can do essentially the same thing?  I mean I still use my Garmin but if my phone had the same capabilities and worked with Google Maps and phone records etc... etc... I'd be all over just using my phone and not buying a new GPS.

May as well just link what i read:

Quote
Inside a mostly speculative piece about iPhone nanos and GPS on the next iPhone, Popular Mechanics does have one pretty solid nuggest: The president of an unnamed GPS navigator maker (figure out who for bonus points) said he felt "scared shitless" by the prospect of an iPhone with GPS, because it'd be good enough for most users to never even glance at a separate GPS unit—with a decent-sized touchscreen and Google Maps interface, just add a carmount and you're good to go on foot or the road. In a way, this was inevitable.

I've considered a separate GPS for when I travel (the one in my car is stuck there).  I've been struggling by with Google Maps and the iPhone now, but with the new iPhone, there is absolutely no reason for me to buy a separate GPS.
