OUT!

My Original iPad is still good enough.

Who's going to use that thing to record movies?

Someone needs to make an 'OUT!' emoticon.

I have a friend who's a traveling teacher, and she does't use her Ipad to teach kids in third world nations how to make videos. There are even rigs to fix the Ipad to a tripod. It's pretty neat.

The Apple store is finally up and now I'm stuck on the final screen.

Just take my money already!

Cool.  icon_smile Which model (type, color etc.) did you get? I'm thinking with all the Cloud focus, going for higher GB isn't something I'd need. Although I'm glad I went with a 32GB Touch on my 2nd one, I probably could've made do with like 24GB if they offered that. But I don't know. What's a hundred bucks more anyway? Won't even buy two games nowadays.  icon_razz

I'd probably consider either of the cheapest models (16GB regular or 16GB 4G). I certainly don't need 4G per se, I just think it'd be nice to have in case I discovered some good applications/uses for it.

I got the black 16gig WiFi model.

I have a 16g iPad1 and I've never regretted not getting 3G.  99% of the time I use it at home on my WiFi network.

I don't store music on the device and don't travel so much that I need more than one or two movies on it at a time so the extra space isn't worth $100 to me.

My 6 year old will be surprised when I tell her the iPad1 is now hers.

i think my iPad 2 will hold me over until the iPad 4.

I think you mean "The Newer iPad".

It'll be the iPad Harder.

Also, store was up for like 10 min and now it's back down. I keep throwing my wallet at the screen but nothing's happening.

I've managed to get past the configuration page to the accessories page, but now it's crapping out on me  icon_frown

Also on my desktop machine (running Firefox) it says Choose Network Carrier and gives me the choice of AT&T or AT&T.  When I visit the same page on my iPad it gives me AT&T or Verizon which is, I presume what it's supposed to say.

Yeah, I was there, and then the page just seemed to stop responding. Now I can't get in.

Oh well. My b-day's coming up in late April. Assuming they aren't completely out of stock then, maybe I can treat myself then.  icon_smile

I was favoring the 32GB 4G version. I mean really, I'd feel the same bad having a $729 device stolen or broken as a $500 or $600 device so why not go for it.  icon_cool

Getting the WiFi 64 gig one because I am always running out of room on my first gen 32 gig one. White just to differentiate from my first one.

Can start the order but can't get past engraving.

Oh and a blue leather smart cover.

Do you guys think the Apple Care extended warranty stuff is worth bothering with?

Targus announced some new cases:
http://www.tuaw.com/2012/03/07/targus-welcomes-the-next-generation-ipad-with-seven-new-cases/
*I think some of these are just updated models, and others are new designs.

Aaand, read they'll continue also offering the 16GB WiFi/3G model for $529 (WiFi only model $399), with the 32GB and 64GB iPad 2 models discontinued. I'm sure the various retailers will start discounting all that stuff soon.

I know a lot of people who drop their iPhones a lot, so for those people I think it's worth it for the iPhone.  I don't know anyone who has dropped an iPad, at least not and had their screen shattered, but it's certainly possible.  I personally didn't get it.  I figure if anything happens to the iPad, I hopefully have had it long enough that there's a new model to upgrade to.

Update: We just circled back with Apple and learned a few more nuggets. The new iPad is ever-so-slightly thicker than the iPad 2, but we're told that "most accessories" (including the Smart Cover) should work just fine.

I agonized over that question, too. I didn't have it for the original iPad and my iPhone 3GS. No problems with iPad, but wished I had it with the 3GS.

So I went ahead and got it for my iPhone 4S without question. The iPad? Was a hard one, but I said screw it and went ahead.

Might be a waste of money. Might be *very* glad I had it. Could go either way.

Really? .03 inch difference in thickness and .11 pounds heavier and you're saying this? Considering the additional battery capacity needed to support that retina display and LTE I'd call it pretty remarkable that it changed so little as to basically be the same form factor. Hey I have a wimpy question: If you order something from Apple, does it come in a box festooned with "Apple" and the iconic logos on it? Not that I don't trust my condo building neighbors but... I don't trust them if I have an iPad-sized box that screams "Apple" on it laying in front of my door all day.  paranoid icon_smile

I didn't see this get answered.  As I recall, the boxes are pretty discrete.   It's usually clear they're shipping from China.  However, it doesn't matter about neighbors since, unless they've changed their policy, Apple doesn't allow deliveries without a signature.  Someone has to be there and sign for it, or you'll be heading off to the Fedex depot to pick it up after hours.

For those commenting on 16gb will be enough, I thought 32gb would be more than enough for my first iPad. If you are going to game they seem to be getting bigger and bigger as time goes on. 14gb of my current iPad is apps alone. Of course you can delete things you don't play as often, but I would expect app size to only get bigger with the new capabilities of the iPad.

Just something to think about.

It really depends on what you store on it.  I've got 14GB of music and audio books on mine, and that's nowhere near my entire music collection.  The real killer for me though is Video.  Once you start packing TV shows and movies on, particular in HD, the space goes real quick.  A decent length 720p movie will take up around 4GB.  With the new AppleTV supporting 1080p, I assume iTunes will start serving up 1080p movies and TV shows, which will chew up storage space at a horrendous rate.  As I mentioned in the Tablet thread, I would happily pay good money, say an extra $200, for an iPad 128GB instead of 64GB.

On the other hand if you only want to store a limited amount of audio, and you don't want to store any video, you can probably get away with a smaller storage size, although as Lee points out, you can chew up storage space with Apps, and in fact with the move to HD presumably iPad games are going to start taking up even more space.

As with my regular consoles, I don't tend to keep a lot of games on my system.  Other than a couple "go to" games (i.e. FF Tactics, Dungeon Raid, etc.), I tend to delete games once I find I don't play it on a regular basis.  I have a 16GB iPhone, and even with 8 GB of music, I've never run out of space for photos and games.  I can certainly see how this could be a concern though...I've seen people with 8-10 folders full of games on their iPad.

Not doing video (other than Netflix) helps on the storage issue as well.  smile

Oh here's some interesting irony...

A Dell display is an iPad devs’ best friend
http://www.slashgear.com/a-dell-display-is-an-ipad-devs-best-friend-08217480/
Quote
The 27-inch Apple Thunderbolt Display, for instance, runs at 2560 x 1440, meaning it has sufficient horizontal resolution but insufficient vertical pixels to show a full-res Retina Display iPad graphic at once. For developers, that means panning, scrolling and zooming to make sure their app layout looks right.

That’s where Dell steps in. The company’s UltraSharp U3011 LCD display is a 30-inch panel running at 2560 x 1600 resolution, meaning it’s capable of matching the new iPad’s Retina Display pixel for pixel (albeit with significantly less pixel density: around 100ppi, versus the 264ppi of the new iPad).

Of course, we’d be very surprised if Apple left Dell to have the iPad developer display market to itself, however. A new Thunderbolt Display with higher resolution has been rumored for some time, potentially alongside the long-anticipated Mac Pro update, and it would be an odd decision indeed if Apple didn’t turn its pixel-packing attentions to the new screen.
The Dell monitor's $1,299.

They also have their hands-on take:
http://www.slashgear.com/apple-new-ipad-hands-on-07217268/
Quote
Physically, it’s 0.11 pounds heavier than the existing iPad 2, though it’s hardly noticeable. In the hand the brushed aluminum chassis feels much the same as before, but the picture quality is so crisp it looks like a promotional mock-up. Viewing angles are huge, too, certainly on a par with what we’ve seen from Super AMOLED panels in recent months.

Performance from the A5X dual-core processor – with its quadcore GPU – is swift, with apps loading and multitasking flipping through with zero lag. That’s pretty much what we’re used to from the A5, admittedly; we’ll have to wait and see how the heavy-duty games hold up, though, when more developers begin to test the limits of the iPad’s abilities. From what we’ve seen of iPhoto and iMove, though, multimedia editing is potentially faster on the new iPad than on a regular desktop machine.

Ok. Well. Looks like I'm gonna go with a Wi-Fi only model:

Apple’s new iPad can max out your data plan in 10 minutes
Quote
Combine the realities of multimedia file size and a blazing fast connection that allows transfer of said files at unprecedented speeds, and you have a recipe for potentially expensive disaster. One careless download of a 1080p high-definition movie from the iTunes Store over 4G could eat up your entire monthly plan and then some. In fact, if you could achieve download speeds at the theoretical maximum 72Mbps of LTE, you could blow through a 5GB plan in just under 10 minutes, and Verizon's largest 10GB tier in about 20. Real-world speeds of course are actually going to be somewhat lower, but we're still talking about the potential to obliterate your entire expensive monthly data plan in much less than a single day.
