Director Roland Emmerich revealed that the star wouldn’t return to the action film sequel because ‘he’s too expensive.’
"We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new," the German director added.
I am guessing that "(in the script)" part means characters only, not the actors that we knew in those parts?
I've read some Emmerich babble (Huffington Post) where he claims Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are definitely in. Judd Hirsch is 78 now and Robert Loggie 83, but I guess they're both a possibility. Margaret Colin doesn't do much movie work these days but might be game (she's 55 now). I'm sure he could rope in Adam Baldwin.
Randy Quaid's character is dead, and Randy himself is a real-life fugitive in Canada, but you never know what sequels might try to do.
I doubt Roland will re-cast. It's not like the whole cast is emblazoned in folks' memories. He probably just wants three or four familiar faces as a nostalgic hook of sorts.
fwiw, my mom, aunt and I went and saw a midnight show of ID4 back in 1996 when it opened. The Prodigy, AOL and Compuserve (those
were the days
) message boards were all full of fanboi rage that ID4 was a flagrant Star Wars ripoff, and that the FX weren't substantially better than, say, The Empire Strikes Back in 1980. Lots of rage over, "how the hell does an Apple laptop interface with an alien computer? Alien USB?"
Not much different than the rage over new summer movies today. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
I enjoyed it for what it was, which was a big-budget B movie with a high fun factor. Esp. in light of history the last 17 years, the notion of the whole planet banning against one common foe is, well, both enjoyable and sadly naive.
