I loved the first movie, and it holds up really well. I'd love to see a sequel, though I have a hard time believing they could live up to the first.

What holiday will they name this movie after?

My vote:  Good Friday

Then we could have President of the United Blowed-Up States Will Smith make his pre-asskicking speech wherein he proclaims, "Today, will no longer be remembered as Good Friday.  From this day forward it will be remembered as AWESOME FRIDAY!"

I would honestly love a sequel where Earthicans use remnants of the alien tech to construct their own spacefleet, then invade the fuck out of the alien homeworld on D-Day.

Boxing Day.  They came looking for a fight.

It doesn't matter what they call it because this movie is going to suck.  The trailer for the original wowed us because we had never seen such incredible destruction before.  Now that's old hat, so what's the draw?  More of the same, including unfunny attempts at comedy and horrible plot devices?

See, I expect a subtle, moving film of deep emotions, about the hardships faced by alien survivors forced to live on Earth -- first in concentration camps until their lack of militant intentions can be determined, and later serving as the menially-employed, detested underclass of a society limping its way back towards civilization after a devastating war. Can two love-struck teens, one human, one alien, find a way to happiness while torn between two communities that share a planet... but not a world?

Loved the movie and wouldn't mind seeing a part 2.  I always wondered if  a ground war would have broken out with the now stranded Aliens trapped on earth.  Was that the only Alien Fleet?   So much potential

Just go see 2012 (also directed by Emmerich, who no longer partners with Dean Devlin), which is basically Independence Day minus the aliens, and judging from the trailer, any sense of humor or at least marginally amusing characters.  icon_razz

Me thinks ID is very much a product of its almost naive, pre 9/11-Iraq-Afghanistan Wars 1997 era. I loved it, I saw a midnight show on a work night back then. I just don't think it's a well worth visiting again in today's era.

I could however easily see Hollywood stuffing $250 million in Michael Bay's back pocket and making very obnoxious trailers and trying to go back to that well again regardless.  Roll Eyes And I'm sure Apple would again welcome the marketing tie-ins and the breathless online arguments about "How the **** can an Apple laptop interface with some space alien computer?" Well, USB is a Universal port afterall...

I think the aliens switched to iPhones but they actually found a way to tether them (I don't know what that means, but all the cool Apple news sites gripe about not being able to do that smirk).

I seriously don't think Will Smith "needs" a big check to do a needless sequel. And just how many times does Roland Emmerich need to blow up the world anyway? Cripes, Roland, direct a romantic comedy, direct an Indiana Jones/James Bond clone. Grab a handheld camera and direct an indie movie and remember how to film without spending $150 million+.

Roland should watch this Adult Swim Cloverfield spoof to know why it's just plain wrong to want to keep blowing up our country for film fun.  icon_razz

I agree with the sentiments of others who don't want to see a sequel. I like a decent 'B' rate SciFi movie as much as the next person, but ID just didn't do it for me. Will Smith was one of the few good things about the 1st IMO, can't imagine how much worse it'll be without him.

Spoiler for Hiden:
They find out that all the aliens are, in fact, future clones made from Steve Jobs' discarded liver, which was stolen by military scientists trying to invent a tactical computer system that is organic and can think. They were successful, but they found that it was and always would be incompatible with 95% of all other computer platforms, so they paid the Russians to launch it into space with a Soyuz capsule. The capsule managed to break orbit and slungshot around the sun, which sent it forward in time. It crashed on an earth-sized planetoid orbiting Alpha Centauri, and evolved into the aliens. It then decided to come back to earth and revenge itself upon the PC World (not just the magazine).

The ending and beginning were alright but the middle part was dreadfully boring. I'm hoping there is a sequel in the works as I want to see the revenge.

Oh....and "Welcome to Errrfffff"

That's the first thing that popped into my head. Fun movie, but probably about as big of a 'nerd doh' as I can remember on the big screen.
Maybe the aliens, this time around, can have a mainframe that supports something more than a 16 bit operating system. Further, maybe they will figure out a better firewall/antivirus solution, so their ships don't get a 'cold'.

I'd actually love to see a sequel. ID4 was so bad it was fun. If it had any part that rivaled Will Smith's junk talk after he took out the alien fighter, it will be worth the price of admission. "WAIT TIL I GET ANOTHER PLANE". Nice.

arise!

some details from Roland Emmerich:

Quote
It’s been almost almost 17 years since aliens destroyed the White House and the Empire State Building in Roland Emmerich’s 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. But the world’s monuments aren’t safe yet. Emmerich, whose action-packed White House Down hits theaters June 28, says he plans to wreak a new round of havoc in two sequels – ID Forever Part 1 and ID Forever Part II. The films take place 20 years after the original, when a distress call sent by the first wave of aliens finally brings reinforcements to Earth. ”The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back,” explains the director, who completed two scripts with Independence Day co-writer Dean Devlin and has given them to White House Down writer-producer James Vanderbilt for a rewrite. ”And they know that the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us that’s 20 or 25 years.”

I really really really hope they change the name....

I wonder if we will be better prepared then...probably not

Didn't they have one of the space ships even before the attack(the whole film) happened?,they still not figure that stuff out then?
