I want a Harley. Or possibly a Buell. Or maybe an old Triumph Spitfire. Of course, the wife made the "no bike" rule abundantly clear prior to marriage, so I'm hoping this urge will pass.

Explain to her that it's a mid-life crisis
then ask - if she had to choose would she prefer if you either bought a bike or had a couple meaningless affairs with some 20 year old girls.

It's worked for me so far. Ever since i mentioned that I was wondering if I was heading into an early mid-life crisis - I've been able to get all the cool toys

I own a scooter that I use about 6 mos a year for my commute to work and back, but I have wanted a full blown motorcycle since day one. Unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, I see no way to ever get one. So, I have dropped the dream altogether. I wish you nothing but the best. My dream bike is the Kawasaki Concourse 14. Oh man.

I am seriously tempted.... Ehh - I would never get a bike personally (because I had a bad accident while riding on one while i was in the Marines)... but if I ever was, I'd go for the classic Harley look. There's something just so much cooler about those than any of those crotch-rocket looking bikes - plus the matching attire for a crotch-rocket just looks gay.

While I agree that crotch rockets are rather dumb to buy unless you are racing on a track, I disagree 1000% on getting a Harley. Way way way overpriced. Every other manufacturer out there makes cruisers that are 1/2 the price and in most cases better quality. Just my two cents.

I disagree -- it's the mid-life crisis - you don't get to play that card very much so that's the time you don't go into a purchase examining the economics of it like you were buying another family mini-van. It's his time to buy something overpriced with the awesome cool name and exceptionally loud engine.

I tend to not like most "crotch rockets" - no GSXR for me, thanks - but the Duc is thoroughbred Italian redhead on two wheels. Only 80 hp, so it's no rocket, but it makes wonderful sounds and is, IMHO, stunning to look at.

What is it with the mid life crisis and getting a bike? I'm going through that whole thing now. Just passed my M-License test the other day. Although I'm getting a scooter instead (Vespa GTS). Still I'm like WTF, as I hadn't wanted a bike since I was 18.

Go for the ducati, as I have to go against the crowd here and say "Harley" type bikes are gay as hell. It screams "someone please pay attention to me" (All that money for an out of tune engine?); not to mention the attire to go with it is hilarious. Leather tassles? Wtf? Anyhow count me in the sport bike camp.

This is what my friend got. He used to have Harley bikes but says they are junk now. Another guy even said his friend's new Harley was going along and the front wheel fell off 1 week after getting it. Anyways my friend got a 1998 kAWASAKI Vulcan 800 for around $900 and loves it. He has added a windscreen and saddlebags and new pipes and stuff. Its this ciolor but this isn't his bike.

If you're interested in a Triumph Spitfire, for a more modern UK roadster have you considered the Lotus Elise? Look how happy she is! If I had a $40k midlife crisis budget I'd buy that in an instant. If my crisis budget was <$20k, I'd buy an MR2 Spyder in an instant: All the fun and performance of a Porsche Boxster for half the price! If my crisis budget is <20k and includes a lot of free time, I've still got my heart set on building a Shelby Cobra Kit Car: Though I have to admit the more I research kit cars the more I find myself tempted by some of the less commonly kitted 50/60s convertibles.

Get a 23 year old hottie. That'll show the wife and her "no bike" rule.
