It continues to be an amazing year of growth for me, I learned something incredible: the secret ingredient that makes McDonald's Hamburgers taste so good is not the quality beef <cough> or the fresh buns <snicker>: it's the mustard.

I've avoided mustard my whole life. It's gross. But I've always thought McDonald's hamburgers have something special that makes me enjoy them (on the rare occaison that I do).  Well I've clued it together: Just last week I made hamburgers at home and put the fixings on mine and then my wife's.  I then accidentally took a bite out of hers and it was delicious.  I corrected the error and then ate a bite of mine. It was missing something...it was the mustard!  I'm not to the point where I'll try it on hotdogs, but it is now a must on all my hamburgers.  Unbelievable.

First, rarer meat. Then a whopper. Then Bruce Springsteen. Not to mention John Mayer! Oh and Avril and Kelly and Alannis all falling out of my favor.

Wow. All this change just shows how much I haven't lived in my 33 years!  Up next: Heroin!

Mustard is the devil unless combined with honey and whatever else goes into that dressing.  I revile Dairy Queen for making it standard to add that yellow crap onto chili dogs.

They make some amazing mustard here in Northern California - I'm particularly fond of Mendocino Mustard:

I second the stadium mustard, just can't be beat. Mustard is great on everything, from a roast beef sandwich to Italian sausage and of course a hot dog.

Yellow mustard, brown mustard, horseradish mustard, grey poupon, that expensive stuff with the little round seeds...it's all good. I often use mustard instead of ketchup on french fries. I don't understand why mustard is an uncommon restaurant condiment. It belongs on every table.

I don't do condiments. I prefer my burgers with lettuce, onion, maybe some bacon, but otherwise dry. I'm eating it to taste meat, not some overpowering sauce.

If any of the mustard dissidents enjoy corn dogs or brats and you eat them with something other than mustard, then you're doing it wrong.

Hot dogs are meant to be topped with ketchupmustardonionpickle.  There's no other way.

Mustard, relish, onion, tomato wedges, pickle spear, sport peppers, and celery salt on a poppy seed bun.

The other acceptable ways of serving a dog are with kraut and mustard, or with chili, cheese and onions.

But the first = perfection.

Only if you're from Chicago.  Where I grew up you had to specify if you didn't want ketchupmustardonionpickle.  Otherwise you'd get <<insert number>> dogs "with everything".  And that meant ketchupmustardonionpickle.  This was at Toby's in Phillipsburg, NJ.  Jimmy's over in Easton did things the same way but rumor is they closed down.   icon_frown

If you really want a great cheeseburger, try some good mustard (with the seeds in it) and
horseradish
in lieu of ketchup, mayo or whatever else you put on a burger.  That's a damn good burger.

I've recently replaced most of my ketchup use with Chipotle sauce. Now that adds some real spice to the dish. I've never gotten into horseradish.

I dont think Chicago knows what a hot dog or pizza is really. Hot dogs sgould have nothing other than yellow mustard, onions, chili, sauerkraut or a combo of any of those.

And if I get a double cheese burger at MickeyDs I always get it double mustard.

Chipolte is good too.  But there's something about horseradish that just makes a burger perfect.
