So I applied for a Network Engineering position yesterday and I have an interview already tomorrow at 7:30am.    I'm nervous but hopeful.  Anyone care to offer advice on technical interviews?

Just make sure you never say how miserable you are at your current job and how you would jump ship at the slightest chance. Desperation never works. smile Otherwise, good luck! thumbsup

Tip 1: Don't be afraid to admit you don't know something. Just make sure you say that you are sure you could figure it out by... (whatever method seems appropriate, i.e. look it up on the Interwebs).

Tip 2: Don't call it the Interwebs in the interview.

Good luck.

Lol, make sure it has a good disability plan - but don't ask about that in the interview.

GOOD LUCK!  If you want it - you deserve it!

7:30 AM?

Dress for success man. Make that first impression really count. Also, say lots of crap about making the company a better place, being in it for the long haul, etc.

Don't say anything negative about yourself.  Spin any potential bad questions to the positive.

If you are asked if you have experience woth system X then and you touched it once, then say yes a little. A qualified yes beats a no.

Read up a little on their organization if possible and then ask some follow up questions about what they do to show your interest.

Throw in some personal stuff.  Part of the interview is knowing your stuff but the other part is being someone they want to work with day in and out.

Or better yet, quit the technical field and go into management (even if it's tech management).  I no longer think the field has much future potential, unless you want a future of supporting what are the legacy systems of tomorrow.  Not that there isnt money in legacy support, as any AS400 or OS/2 person can tell you.

All my tech knowledge is cutting edge as I'm still in college.  My last report for my class was on the power of the Cell processor. smile

I am looking forward to being a tech manager - I just need some resume fodder first.

Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions, it is appreciated!

Seriously? What could this possiblyu have to do with a job interview? Why would you come into a thread where we are all supporting Ron and tell him that the fact that he is asking for our help is dooming him to failure? What the hell are you talking about?

Hey i'm supporting Knightshade too, but he got my attention after he said " nervous but hopeful " . I know alot of people right now, who goes out to a job interview and says the same thing, and i know something the world aint focus on.

Thats why i said, that mankind is the root of all wrong doing. I'm not saying knightshade is doing anything wrong, i was just pointing out some serious issues in today's world.

Just ignore what i said, if you cant catch on.

Let me put this delicately General.

Get bent.  Kthanks.

To those who live on this plane of existence, the job interview went well.  I was able to dance around the areas where I'm rusty and I think I was confident enough to handle the scenario questions he handed me.  I'd be more specific but I know that some of the other people interviewing read these boards. smile

The job posting ends on Friday and they expect round 1 interviews to be done by then.  The next round will be sometime in the last week of the month.  For all intents and purposes, I should know yea or nay by the end of next week.

So I made it to round 2.  I'm making the second swipe at it today at 8:00am.   Looks like it may be just two people.  The other guy didn't find out he had an interview until this morning (just goes to show, check your Voice Mail often) and he didn't shave or wear a shirt/tie.  I don't wish ill on the guy, but I'm also playing to win.

Good luck.

One piece of advice: If they ask a situational questions (BDI)*, make sure you think about what they're looking for. Stories of super human strength are nice, but they're looking for thought pattern and a "well-adjusted" person. Don't miss the point of the question to tell a success story. It's ok to "think about" their question, or get them to repeat it. (just don't do it for every one, or take too long). They're asking you to think of an example; it's not unreasonable to "think" about it.

It goes towards showing your comfort level with pressure situations as well. Your ABILITY to answer the question properly goes a long way.

*BDI - behavioural determination interview style (AKA beedy eye)

That went really well.  They are hiring for two positions it seems...I now have a 66% chance to get it just based on the stats. biggrin  I think I interviewed really well though...it was the "Why are you better? What is your biggest weakness?"

I hate those questions.  I actually got a job after I answered, " I don't know the other people interviewing for the job so I can't say if I am better or not." I figured I pressed my luck and now have some prepared BS to use instead.

For the 2nd I always feel compelled to answer either, "my lack of humility" or "the inability to take a question like that seriously."

I assume I am too late to really get in the fun but things that work well for me in job interviews -

1) Make sure to ask about his policy on "Banging the help"
2) When he/she goes to shake your hand, use your index finger to tickle thier palm.
3) At least once during the ionterview, start singing a random green day song.
4) When they mention any kind of drug testing, get real nervous and go: They cant tell if I do crystal meth with a pee test right?
5) Wear a Garbageman Outfit
6) Steal several items off his desk, dont give them back.
7) When he asks you any kind of question about "Why would you be a good asset to this company?"  (They always ask this question, like they care what your answer is) Make sure to respond with: "I can most assuredly tell you, I will drink enough for the rest of the company combined during work hours."
Cool Ask if your Boss has a daughter/son who is "Street Legal" or close enough to make it ok in your book.
9) Bring in a PSP, play during interview, look up once in a while saying: "Almost done with this level, hold on a minute..."
10) Go on the wrong day, at the wrong time, for the wrong Job and use a Resume that has the name "Bill Gates" or "Martha Stewart" on it.
