Actually, I guess "new puppy" is akin to "front headlight" - oh, well, I am very, very, very tired.

We sorta "rescued" this 12 week old German Shepherd, from a kind, loving family - who knew zero about raising a puppy.  She was terrorized, they were terrorized, and now I'm really tired.  In the month that they had her, they managed to - inadvertently - teach her to Sit, Puppy-Nip at All Loose Fingers and Toes, Chew Everything, Snap and Growl if her Food was Approached.... hmmm, what else - oh, yeah - Pee on the Carpet!

They bought a dog and a book...   I know they cared about her - she has all her vet care, and they even brought her to a "dog behaviorist" - who promptly said that the pup was too aggressive.  Speaking of Grrrrr..... They immediately put her up for sale, afraid for their 5 year old daughter - for the price of her vet and behaviorist care ($200).  As soon as I saw her I knew we'd gotten an incredible pup - she's intelligent, playful, and willing to please... and  she immediately peed on their rug to seal the deal!

We got her last Tuesday evening - within a few hours I could take her food, toy, or bone away from her, and in the past week she has become "a new dog."  She still nips occasionally (she's  a puppy!), but 90% of that is over;  she can Sit, Come, Stay, Lie Down, and I'll start on Heel soon - she's already very gentle on a leash and is fine off-leash in the yard. Oh,  and she's housebroken, lol. Tongue

I haven't gotten much sleep, though - I have to pay constant attention and give constant gently correction/ approval to her, and provide nearly non-stop trips outside (boy, do puppies poop a lot!  and who gave them those tiny bladders?)  But, wow is she cute!

And her name is "Bug" - she loves to chase moths, she's "Cute as a.." - and when she weighs 90 lbs, it'll really be funny!

Something I got in the e-mail long ago...

Jesus, it makes me wanna cry. crybaby  What a softie!
---

A Puppy's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master,
for no heart in the world is more grateful
for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick,
for though I lick your hand between the blows,
your patience and understanding will more quickly
teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is sweet music
to my ears, as you must know by the fierce wagging of
my tail, when your footstep falls upon my waiting ears.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside,
for I am now a domesticated animal,
no longer used to the bitter elements.
I ask no greater glory than the privilege
of sitting at your feet beside the hearth, or
snuggling on your knee, as your stroke my head.

Though had you no home,
I would rather follow you
through the ice and snow, than rest upon
the softest pillow in the warmest home
in all the land, for you are my hero,
and I am your devoted, adoring, worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water,
for although I should not reproach
you were it dry, I cannot tell you
when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food, that I may be well,
to romp and play and do your bidding,
to walk by your side, and stand ready,
willing, and able to protect you with my life
should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master
see fit to deprive me of my health or sight,
do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me,
gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me
the mercy of eternal rest,

And I will leave you knowing
that with the last breath I drew,
my fate was ever safest in your hands,
and I will remain, forever loved, in your heart.

That's okay, we 'rescued' a 8-12 week old puppy...and by rescued I mean that some car drove up our road, stopped, dropped the dog and a bag out the door and took off.

Dammit Stiffler!

I'm sitting here at work reading this and my eyes are all filled with tears.  Those last two paragraphs really, really got to me.  I'm very emotional for a guy.  Oh boy.  Powerful is the written word.

Thanks, Everyone, for all the Congrats and Best Wishes (and Complements on Cuteness!) Tongue

We have a "large-ish" back yard - just no fence.  But we live next to wooded conservation land, with trails.  Unfortunately, when I walk her, I have to stick to the flat area, which is maybe the size of a football field-and-a-half (muscle disorder, Hills = Bad).  But she's great about staying nearby, so I throw tennis balls and rag toys for the rest of the exercise...  If it's not me, she gets the whole enchilada - a walk thru the conservation trails, to a large pond, around it, and back - takes about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour. A Tired Puppy is a Happy Puppy!

Stiffler, you're funny!  I love the crying-your-eyes-out thing, and that poem is Da Bomb - although I don't know why I resurrected that phrase!  Poor Starshifter!  But I suspect he's crying bcz his beloved DVD's aren't out yet... (Although he's right - whew, those last two paragraphs!)

Zarkon - what happened with that pup?  Is (s)he okay, happy, etc.?

Wow, cute pup!  You're brave to take on one so young.  We decided to go with a year-old "puppy" in March.  He's been a bit of work, but lots of fun for the boys too:

Qbe,

I used to show dogs when I was a "youth" so I can't always recognize the breeds anymore...  Is that a Clumber Spaniel? :?

She's fine.  Scampering little thing that she is.  We're just not sure on the age.  She seems to have some terrier in her, too.

It is.  My wife went through a book of dog breeds (she's a dog fan) and tried to pick out the best match for our kids.  That's what she picked.

You're new puppy "paws" the pants off of all other puppies.  At times she'll be a handful (I know from experience - my family owns a cocker spaniel   biggrin ) but at other times she will be the greatest thing to ever happen to you.  Dogs are awesome creatures.

Have fun!

Awww, what a cutie.  If we ever get another dog, I want a Shepherd.

At least the family you got her from gave a crap about her.  Most of the families in my neighborhood get puppies for their kids, and once they get past the "Oh, they're so cute" stage, they completely abandon them.  There's two dogs down the street that I have never once seen out of their kennel.  Snow, rain, sleet, heat...doesn't matter.  These dogs stay in the kennel no matter what.  I've never seen them walked or seen anyone at the house interact with them other than yelling at them to shut up.  It's really sad.  frown
