It would be pretty ironic if they did get hit by Gustav, especially so close to the anniversary of Katrina.  of course it's hard to predict the path that far out, and it could decide to whack Florida just as easily.

Absolutely. The path at this point is almost meaningless, except maybe to say it's headed gulf side. TS Fay played games with the forecasters, and was even nicknamed The Trickster. The path changed about 10 times, then it just sat still for almost 24 hours.

What scares me about Gustav is it getting into the open gulf waters. It's almost guaranteed to elevate to a level 5.

Yeah, lots could change in between now and then.  Look at Fay, which kind of danced around Florida for a while and then hooked left.  Still, if it did happen, I feel sorry for the city.  All my family lives there and I was the only person smart enough to get the hell out long ago.  My uncle lost his house in Katrina and I am sure other areas will get messed up badly as the levee system fails in more spots.  We shall see, though.  I can already feel my Mom starting to worry.

Actually, another flood in NO would be seen as a failure to address the problems uncovered by the last flood.  However, no flood wouldn't be easily touted politically (raw nerve - "that's what should have happened the first time").  That's not a good option for the Bush Administration.

I don't blame you if you have. If I ever get out of this hell-hole, I'll be celebrating every hurricane season too. (Celebrating that I'm not still there).

Current track for Gustav has shifted slightly west, still dead center for Louisiana though.

Hurricanes -- the primary reason why I hate being in the Louisiana National Guard.
We got activated for that one, but I was dismissed shortly after since I have an active Line of Duty case.

Not in those exact words, no. It's your standard opening for your What are you buying this week? and your old summary news posts that triggered it... although you tend to express your gratefulness at not dealing with hurricanes every season. biggrin

Wait, you voluntarily booked a trip to New Orleans?    saywhat

Had to go there last fall for a work conference, and I can't ever imagine actually choosing to go back.  Most of us in the office fought tooth and nail to go to a different conference, just we wouldn't have to make any trips there this year.

I suppose, if that's your scene.  At the risk of sounding like a prude, I found Bourbon Street (and, frankly, most of the parts of NO we were in) to be rather disgusting.  Felt like I needed to take a shower after just walking up and down the street.

Another +1.  I was there about ten days ago for a few days and stuffed myself well.  My ol' lady and I have averaged a weekend or so for past 8 years (beat Katrina by four days) just to pig out and enjoy the hospitality.

Gratch, I totally understand the 'tainted' feeling you get there.  The humidity, plus the smell of Bourbon Street, makes it feel like it's permeating your body.  Still, I love the town and I'll keep going as long as they keep rebuilding it.

New Orleans is totally my kind of place.  Old city with great food.  I'm very much looking forward to it.

+1  We were there a few months ago and it was fantastic.  Great antique shops, fantastic food and seriously friendly people trying like hell to bring back their city.

As a man I have dined with at Commander's Palace LV, I must ask - did you go to the original and is it as awesome as I am hoping it is going to be?

Hehe.  Commander's is a favorite stop when we go to Nawlins and we went on our last night there.  The whole food/service/atmosphere package makes it irresistable.  They're dressier than the LV location was (they suggest a coat for dinner) but that just makes it part of the fun for us since L.A. dining tends to be much more casual.  Two thumbs up.
